Ep.3 BALANCE - Betta Tank -Low Tech Aquarium -No Filter,No Ferts,No CO2 (Walstad Method)
7 months have passed and the aquarium has reached equilibrium, has found its equilibrium.
the shrimps have spawned and reached a population of around 60\70 shrimps. we can say is a well sized colony.
i can't promise it but i'm planning a time lapse for the next update video :)

Nicely done. I think your setup really shows the importance of patience in a walstad tank. Once the ecosystem finds its balance, the plants will really grow in nicely just as yours have! I didn't have enough patience with my early walstad tanks, but your video has inspired me to give it another go!

I am so glad to hear that 😊 If you don't have patience I am sure you'll get patience once you will see your walstad getting close to the balanced. Having an aquarium is not like keeping any other animals, you want to interact with it, and in a tank you only interact with feeding fish or trimming and maintenance some time. So we are tempted to touch it 😄 The first couple of months it need some attention, later on is better forget about the tank for a while 😆

Thanks for the support my friend 💚 70lt... you're gonna have lots of fun buddy 😄 More plants you use better it is Only bad thing is the cost of the plants 😅 Anyway I love this method (walstad) cause it is a natural way to keep aquariums, and you don't have to do waterchanges after 4/5 months 🤣

Love your videos, just wondering about the water temperature range? Obviously not using a heater, just wondering if my room temperature would be enough for shrimp. Thanks.

Many thanks my friend 😊 Depends what is the temperature in the room. By the way cherry shrimps can tollerate temperature down to 19c° Ideal temperature would be 23 to 25 Celsius

Nice growth! Better than my CO2 tank. My light is weaker though. I didn't want algae.

When I first dived in to aquarium I was so frenetic to try co2, but then I discovered Diana walstad, I was reading so much stuff that I get very excited about this natural method to build a tank, so I tried, and I loved it. For the little I know about co2 I was reading you need also a good light in order to permit the plants to grow fast and using all the co2 in the water, How old is your tank? And do you have algae in it?

@@MicroWorld7 I have little BBA & green spot algae. Not much algae. CO2 is abundant in a natural system. We're only mimicking it by adding CO2. A walstad tank will generate 15-20ppm of CO2 for like 6 months. You'll see good growth and then after a while when the organics in the soil runs out, also the CO2, you'll see the plants struggle and algae come back. I don't add that much CO2. I add about 15-20ppm, just like a Walstad tank. You can see my tank here www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/journals/145165-my-75g-evolution.html Diana Walstad is on the forum, in the El Natural section.

Great informations, you said right, after many months you run out of organic materials in soil, but if you have a good amount of creatures, like I have more than 60/70 shrimps in the tank, they'll produce waste (poop) that waste will end up trough the sand, basically from the waste of animals and dead leaf the thank will produce it's own soil, the only thing you have to make sure is that you have a very deep gravel bottom The first month the layer of my gravel was not to thick, now is double the thickness it was at the beginning because all the organic wastes in it, in this video you can see It as a new dark layer forming under the gravel, you can observe it by the sides of the tank. I'll go check your video right now 😄

@@MicroWorld7 Well, sort of. The critters will supply good nitrogen based organics. The bacteria generating CO2, needs carbon based organics to feed and convert CO2. It's like a garden compost!

i've tried this and my only problem is the hair algae is destroying my plant and somehow many will produce green algae that cover entire plant, shrimp didn't do much. Sadly i dont know what is unbalanced in my tank
@MicroWorld7

How old is the aquarium? At the beginning is ok to have lots of algae, remove em as much as you can, do lots of waterchanges at least for the first period the tank is running, you have to focus on getting rid of excess nutrients in the water, limiting the light period (is better if you have a constant light period with a timer for the lights). More plants you start with better it is, if you think it's a competition between plants and algae, so help plants in any way you can. If you see no end with the algae invasion try a blackout, cover the tank in the way no even a minimum amount of light will get through, leave it for 3 to 5 days (is fundamental you never check, you'll get light in it for sure) After 3/5 days uncover it and trim all the plants, get rid of all dead algae, do a massive waterchange and start with a short period of ligth as 6 hours a day and increase it over time based on how the plants are doing. I had a problem with blue green algae and it worked for me. Keep in mind is very stressful for plants and some may die
