Ep 3 Neck shaping, attaching the Fretboard - Making a Modern Multi-Scale Electro Acoustic Guitar

Welcome to Crimson Guitars kzfaq.info... and Ben’s home workshop where he is currently building the modern multi-scale NEBULA 2.0 Guitar. In this episode, Ben needs to make sure that the neck will not move once he cuts away the bulk of the waste material, and he glues on the multi-scale, fanned fretboard.
The original Nebula guitar featured here - • Burning Bridges and an... was so well received that it sold immediately...twice.
In this series, Ben will be building the new and improved Nebula 2.0 as a custom order. • Making a Modern Multi-... Different from the original, this guitar will be a multi-laminate neck, modern fanned fret, semi-hollow, electro-acoustic beauty. This series should be about 10-12(ish) episodes.

One of the things I love most about your videos, is the advice you give about the use and care of hand tools. My father had no idea how to look after hand tools, so whenever someone has advice on how to use and care for them properly, I pay close attention. Thank you for all the wonderful advice.

Ben, I have missed you! I have been incredibly busy over the Thanksgiving holiday- the two weeks before were absolute madness at work, and left me exhausted for the past week, but finally have been able to catch up. Heading into the Christmas season is difficult this year, since I am so far away from family, but being back here truly soothes my soul and brightens my day. This entire community is a real comfort.

The thing I most admire about you, Ben, is how you keep your ego in check. I think you achieve a great balance between pleasing the client and your creative instincts. No BS - having solid skills is great, but having respect and patience for the real process, giving consideration to the long-term future of the instrument, future owners and repairmen, those are the qualities of true masters. secretly I am a raging ego maniac! ;) But thank you, I really have had to give actual thought to who I want to be and how to become that.. as a young luthier I really thought I was 'the shit' and it took a long time to learn that I really wasn't.. now I know I have a long long way to go in my craft yet every night I read hundreds of comments from people telling me I'm amazing!?! Confusing much? Anyway, you are right.. the future owners and repairers are the most important people, after the 1st owner of course.. B

No major hitches, prepared clamps, nice... although the fretboard itself wasn't fully ready before glue-up. I give this fretboard glue-up a 9.5/10. You get a bonus half point for the callout 😁👍

In my simple mind I would be inclined to start clamping the fingerboard from the middle and evenly work my way towards the ends much like torquing a cylinder head on an engine. But I’ve never built a guitar from scratch so please take that into consideration, lol. I always look forward to your videos. It’s a joy to watch a passionate craftsman do his thing!

It is no problem at all to sit a bench plane on its sole provided the surface won’t chip or mar the blade. If the plane is set up correctly, the iron will not be knocked out of adjustment. The old “common wisdom” that a plane should be laid on its side comes from old text books used in public schools. This was largely a measure for the kids not to ruin the plane irons by dinging them up every 5 minutes. Rock on, Ben!

On the hand made router plane, the thought I had was that you could make a hybrid body, take the traditional router plane body, make it longer for stability, and add handles out of the side similar to a draw plane/spokeshave for lateral control/stability

I have a beautiful antique router plane that I actually bought from you. I don't use it because I've not yet put the time into restoring it but rather keep it as a conversation piece in the workshop. Most people have no idea what it is so that makes it fun to have even if it's only a shop decoration.

a little tip for hardening metals, check the carbon in the metal by holding against your grinding wheel. if there is little carbon in the metal the sparks will be short and don't branch of in to smaller sparks. If there is a high amount of carbon which is needed for hardening the sparks will look more like those of a fireworks sparkler, meaning the sparks branch out into more tiny sparks. compare it to holding a old file or chisel against the wheel :)

I think your original Nebula build is what brought me to your channel. Also, had to laugh at the channel plane router build reasoning. "Some of you may not have a router" but apparently we have bench equipment to accurately grind hardened steel... I think you just wanted to make a new tool 😆

Another test that is useful to test how hard you'll be able to get the Allen key before hardening it is to grind it and view the sparks. The more carbon in the steel the more sparky the sparks will be when grinding.

First things first - this is gonna be hard for me to articulate but I will try. I suggest you make a laminated fret board akin to the neck you made but with far more strips of wood. Then, before shaping the neck, trim it to size at a slight angle to make the strips look "crooked." I'm just using my imagination and have no clue if it would be workable or give the fret board a crooked effect. Hope the cat's okay. Cheers, Ben....

Lovely job so far. Yes, please, do the bespoke tool builds. One of the most infectious maladies I suffer from is making tools and jigs in the shop when I am supposed to be centered on a "real" project. Good to see others suffer from that as well.

One way to make the channel would be to use a right width rebate plane and just plane all the way through. You then need to glue end pieces to the channel, but I see no problem in that. It's not really necessary to have the piece in dogs for planing, btw. And end stop is enough. Maybe some side support helps on an asymmetrical piece. Planes are such precise instruments, you don't really generate sideways forces.

I found that a router plane is really only good for the last shallow passes to get it parallel to the face, not using it to hog out the whole thing from start to finish.

What about doing a wooden plow plane? I have one and it draws straight grooves like the truss rod cavity easily. I bought it online for a very reasonable price, but I am certain Ben could a lovely build one. And I, for one, would love to watch. 🙂

Modest suggestion: instead of a rolled bit of masking tape in the middle of the truss rod, how about a rolled bit of the soft side of velcro? It would never break down and compress past 2mm.

That would work well.. I have seen other luthiers using veneer for this purpose.. I may well go that route.. it is far more easily accessible.. B

If you ground the Allen key "foot" closer to the "ankle" so that it only stuck out 10-12mm you could still get a good edge om it but the "yawing" of the blade would be less apparent.

Personally I prefer to put on the binding after I put make the neck, so that I can lay the binding just slightly below the f.board/neck joint. If there's any gaps for any reason, they're now hidden with the binding, which really, is the point of binding, to hide joints with decorative features.

I recently made my first bound neck and glued the fretboard on first, then routed for the binding. it worked out really well. I was thinking of putting the binding on first, next time, to see what I prefer, but I also tend to want to just go with what I know works. I bought a router bit with different bearings for different binding thicknesses and want to get my money's worth, so who knows. I don't think it makes much difference.

gluing the binding to the fretboard first just means that you have to plane the gluing face down again before you install the fretboard.. an extra job therefore not the most efficient way to be gong about things.. B

I like to drizzle some really thin CA glue into all the wood screw holes in guitars to reinforce the threads. Particularly strap button screw holes and pickguard screw holes. Better to do it when the threads are in good shape than to wait until they get stripped out and have to be repaired.

Could you have made the center lamination of the neck the exact width of the truss rod and cut out a long notch for the truss before laminating the neck together or would that make it harder due to needing to know where things would be on the neck before you have the whole block?

Inlay a section of the burl shaped like a small galaxy/nebula at the twelfth fret and stain it to match the body/headstock.

taking another look at the neck now that the fretboard is glued in place, as it is right now, the headstock is long enough to turn that into a 12 string guitar. Maybe a future project?
