Ep. 36 PULLING FILATI FOR MOSAICS, the rings, new pendants & framing The Hibiscus.
I kick off this week by firing up the torch and pulling some malmischiato filati to fill some ceramic rings for installation in The Ruins Project. More info here: ruins.sagermosaics.com/ The process has me melting down Orsoni smalti. I cut the filati down until I have an inventory for my palette. Then I place a piece of mesh under the ring and fill it with black Apoxie Sculpt. Using tweezers, I insert each piece separately to create color rings for The Ruins Project. Then I go a little bonkers making rings and pendants and more rings and more pendants!
Next I have an unboxing from Delphi Glass. The turn around time was very quick. I show a bunch of tiles in all different colors.

I really enjoyed this video and recently bought some filati and am designing my first pendant. I have been looking around for more colors of filati and came across stringers on Etsy I guess used in fusing glass. Can they also be used for micro mosaic? Are they as easy to cut as filati?

Nice. Stringers have limited use as many times the cut side (usually of translucent glass) appears black. I'm not sure where you purchased yours. DiMosaico and Wits End carry filati & another source is www.smaltiemporium.com/filati

Your crane is beautiful! What do you use to stick the glass yo the substrate to keep the color of the glass so bright Im assuming you used stained glass but maybe its donething else

They were from Rachel Sager of the Ruins Project for a site specific installation. She is finished with it at this point.

Do you use your stained glass for the filati or only glass that is fusible?

@mazzonimosaics8222 Thank you. I pull stringers for use in bead making, and it looks like a similar process... I'm just thinking about the COE of stained glass and how it is not really fusible

I actually did try using COE96 once and it did not work well. I can't remember what happened. I might have to try it again.

Thank you so much! I studied painting and color theory for years. Note: I do not paint much, as it is more of a hobby. But it helped me understand color. I also spend plenty of time studying other artists in every medium. You are not doing anything wrong, but might need to take a class or two to understand how to achieve the look you want.

@@mazzonimosaics8222 thank you for your response and I knew you were going to say I have that gift. I would but where I live there's nothing around here and I can't afford it. I do everything on my own and learn through free sites as much as possible. Like when I first started doing stained glass Mosaic I used a glass hammer, after scoring my glass because I had no clue of the tools that existed 🤣 then when I got them and learned how to use them it was wonderful. The internet is not as friendly as it used to be I noticed things are different these days. It's hard to find what I'm looking for as far as education goes. Thanks again

Can you make filati from vitreous glass?

I've never tried it. I did try COE 96 stained glass for fusing and it was not as easy as smalti. Maybe next time I fire up the torch, I'll test vitreous glass.
