Here we'll show you how to depart from a class Delta airport and request VFR flight following while on the ground before departure. This way you will already have your squawk code assigned and a departure frequency assigned to you before you take off from the class D airport. This is very similar to how you would depart a class charlie airport, receiving a squawk code and departure frequency before changing from ground to the tower frequency.

The class C I fly out of will give you flight following even without requesting it on the ground when you call for clearance and they see your destination isn't local. Love they are trying to keep us safe up there.

Great video. My bias is while on the ground to say "... ready for taxi with a VFR flight following request". That gives them a chance to be ready for the information (destination/altitude).

Amazing how many mid-time pilots I know who are dumbfounded by picking up FF on the ground. Most are used to doing it once airborne. The local controllers around Houston Class Bravo would much rather you pick up flight following on the ground - gives everyone a heads-up prior to you departing. Great video!

Great info and comment about waiting to stopped to roll in the squawk. One note: I would suggest doing the run-up before pulling up to hold short for two reasons. 1) Keeps you out of the way of other who are truly ready to roll past the hold bars, 2) keeps you pointed more into the wind for the sake of the engine. Great pointer about positioning to see aircraft on final.

Am I mistaken>>> Positioning to see aircraft on final and positioning into the wind are usually two different directions, except on a calm day (like this video).

Recently I was under vfr flight following to KBJC for landing. I was getting very close to the airport and did not hear anything from flight following. I finally asked for frequency change to get clearance for landing at KBJC. My question is did I need to ask for frequency change ? Did ATC forget about my intentions? Did flight following relay to KBJC that I was coming in to land? Thanks, good videos.

Often times they will hand you off, but remember with flight following you are pretty low on their priority list and they've got other things going on. They may also delay handing you off til conflicting traffic passes you. Overall, whenever you decide you want to talk to someone else, like CTAF or Unicom, simply request the frequency change and say so long. If you just want to go off frequency for a moment for something like getting the weather, ask to go off frequency for moment and they'll generally approve that and tell you to report back on. As long as you can get a word in edgewise on the frequency I would always ask for the frequency change before just changing over (lots of reasons behind that, few too many to list in the comments section of YT). Safe flying out there! Be sure to share our site with your other aviation friends! -Jon

it's worth mentioning once on the ground at a class Bravo airport that Flight Following for VFR departure clearance is required. It took me 15 minutes at Orlando International (yes KMCO) contacting Ground before she was nice enough to tell me I needed the flight following on Clearance delivery before she could give me taxi instructions. Wish someone would have told me this before I landed there. Was a great learning experience and hope it helps someone else.

Depends on the Airspace setup. They may say "Radar Service Terminated, Squawk and Maintain VFR, Fequency change approved" then you are on your own. You would need to establish comm on your own for any subsequent control agencies you need. Or they may give you the comm change to the next controller. Eventually the controller will terminate you.

Hello from Belgium! I have a question regarding flight following: what if you are not going direct to your destination? Suppose you have 2 or 3 turning points not on the direct line, for sightseeing for example. How and when do you explain that to the controller?
@lewisplant9748
@lewisplant9748 5 жыл бұрын
Arno Fontana You would say “via” and then your waypoint. But in Belgium there is no flight following, Europe has what we call Basic Service and different advisory services - they are similar mostly but better then Flight Following.

I learned at Ann Arbor and keep my plane at 75G now. Question: If I am on flight following does that automatically mean I am cleared through controlled airspace? For instance I want to fly over to the west side of Michigan and that could take me through Jackson delta airspace as well as Kalamazoo depending on altitude. If I am using flight following will I need to contact those towers to pass through? Will I need to hear ATC clear me through those airspaces? Hope that makes sense. Thanks
@davidgrier403
@davidgrier403 7 жыл бұрын
Brian Brickley Approach will USUALLY coordinate with the tower. Personally, I ask the controller if I am cleared thru class D before entering their airspace. Always verify clearance into Bravo and read back the clearance.

Yes, you could use the RCO for the field to try and contact Detroit Approach, can't remember off hand if 1d2 has an rco but it would be in the AFD if it did (now called the chart supplement). If there's not an RCO you can always use a landline if you really wanted to get the squawk on the ground.

B P From my understanding. Unlike class B class C airspace do not need specific clearance to enter. What is require is two communication( talking to a control center) and transponder with mode C. Since he was always talking with departure his entrance in the class C would be implied unless otherwise stated by the ARTCC. Hope my little answer helped.

Interesting, but I found it a bit confusing. Who were you talking to? When were you talking to the tower and when with departure for flight following? I couldn't tell when you switched to the tower for take off instructions? And I was taught I shouldn't leave the tower frequency until out of Class D airspace!?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 8 жыл бұрын
I stayed with ground frequency until up to the holdshort line with the run up complete, then switched to tower. After departure the tower advised me to contact departure (at that point departure takes on the responsibility of separating you from IFR traffic). This is what you will experience in Class C and B airports as well, where they will "hand you off" to departure 30 seconds to a minute after takeoff, regardless of the boundary of that airports airspace. Keep in mind "tower" and "departure" coordinate with each other via landlines so everything works out smoothly.

John... Much appreciate for this video... This is exactly what I was looking for and I guess it's my lucky day because this is my home base KARB. :-)... Talking of luck it looks like you got lucky when you asked for VFR flight following from ground. We tried doing from ground but we were told to contact Detroit App. when we are airborne... So going to try again and hoping to get different controller... It makes a different doing from ground than in air... Also quick question... Sure....just let them know airborne what route you want to fly ...could be as simple as advising them you're going to "follow the shoreline". Flight following is just advisory....not a clearance, you don't have to stick to a certain route unless told to do so by ATC

The controllers at a class D airport don't want to handcuff the approach controllers (at a different facility) into providing flight following. At a class C, the approach is usually combined with the tower.

Birds and deer, too! It's on every ATIS warning in KARB. Deer on the runway at night is a real thing. :D

speaking fast won't represent you as a good pilot. making fewer mistakes does. 1- read back frequency eighteen, ninety-five??!!! what about one one eight "point" niner fi'f'e? :D Second: Detroid "approach"???? it's Detroit Departure dude. that's why ATC corrected you. please stop putting bad videos. overall good but so many mistakes.
