EP-43 | Dr Sateesh Reddy headed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is currently Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri dealing with the programme which spearheads India's indigenous development of defence systems and technologies. In this informative conversation with Smita Prakash, Dr Reddy talks extensively about India’s strategic missile programme and the impact it has on India’s defence system. He sheds light on different developmental programmes undertaken by DRDO for radars, sonar, drones, tanks, aircraft and their contribution during Covid pandemic. He emphasises the growth of the defence industry in India and the start-up movement in the country. He also recalls his years as a young scientist working under the leadership of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

As a young engineer after completing post graduate degree in the US, I developed indigenous technologies in India in early 1980s. We had to wait for 7 years to get phone connection. We could not import components to do research and development without going through elaborate procedures.... Still I moved on and succeeded.. It is so gratifying to see that India has come long way from 1980s......Keep on young India/Indians.....

These are the people who are actually building national capabilities. One thing that government needs to do is pay these people more than anyone else so the talent keeps coming and working for the nation. The job that our scientist do is no less than a soldier guarding indian borders. I'd even say it's much more important especially in this day and age when use of technology determines the outcome of a war.

It is fantastic to see the scientists of this nation given the microphone. We have seen too many "defense analysts," the incorrigible armchair experts on everything Indian defense ecosystem, getting the limelight so far. It is time to make stars out of the real "doers" and sideline the "talkers." We have to make science and technology in the service of nation a cool thing and celebrate the practitioners in that that field in this nation. In PM Modi, nation has finally found a role model for the new generation in politics and selfless service in the path of nation building. Now, let's celebrate real scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs who are contributing to nation building and creating greater "India brand" equity. This is how we inspire the next generation. For longest of time, post-independent India, celebrated those worthless Bollywoodiyas and everyone wanted to be a Khan or Kapoor! Great work, Smita ji! Although, there is lot to be desired from the fellow interviewer; he is constantly interjecting Dr. Reddy while he is trying to get flow in his thought and words. Ask a a good, short question and wait until the man to finsih.

Excellent program. Smita Madam's choice of guests is very good. Dr. Reddy has gave a lot of information on defence equipment and lot of encouragement and hope to the youth, particularly in the last 5-7 minutes of the episode. I used to wonder what will be fate of India whose citizens are mad after engineering and medicine and they particularly ignore pure sciences. Hope, GoI gives right nudge & push to Sciences in India. Once job opportunities are seen students will choose sciences. GoI is in the right direction by allowing foreign universities in India so that competition is created for Indian Universities. Indian Industry should take lead in developing partnership with Science Institutes esp for research.

A small time teacher for more than 60 years,I don't have any right to say, the thing I am going to say but by virtue of being your admirer I am gathering courage to say . I feel self reliance in defence is sense in our policy. As a child I have heard that we manufacture dakota planes. In 60s our engineers took small rockets on bysical. Thumba was great word for we school boys. Atomic energy, trombay were great things. Without researching contribution of V K KRISHNAMENON self-reliant defence department will be incomplete. First nuclear explosion was in 1974. Much, Much work must have gone in before that. Some home work and going deep into it is needed. For me you are " पत्रकारा not प्रचारक". Dr Satish Reddy has demonstrated high quality of leadership. We also need to congratulate and appreciate the previous governments and PMs who have patiently allowed DRDO and other research organizations into what they are today. Indira Gandhi decision to go nuclear in 1974 and within 8 years going with IGMP in 1982 was a huge step. Dealing with MTCR in 1987 and other technology sanctions would have been huge challenge then. Had the research process started in 2014, we would have achieved nothing by now as technologies, leadership and institutions takes decades to evolve. It’s easier today to build efficiencies because we already had everything that was needed.

Smita Prakash has brought to life the suppressed stories, narratives , traditions, personalities, institutional achievements and the India project - which were rightfully ours. For so long. The anglicized, slavish media with their colonialised mentality ( the same was the case with our civil, foreign services, public intellectuals and academics ) made it our national duty to demean and undermine ourselves in the international , open arena. It is still a shame that the best of public intellectuals cannot express themselves in vernacular. We have a long way to go to discover and own our native strengths and achievements. Yet we have made a crucial beginning. As of now the entrenched quislings have been booted out and they crying wolf. Thanks Smita. You are perhaps a decade younger to me. My patriotic wounds are older. At last they are beginning to heal.
