Ep 56 Sailing Solo from Madeira to Bermuda - Part 1

I head west for what I think will be a 20 day trans-Atlantic passage to Bermuda (on an unusual route, at an unusual time of year - May). Loss of use of the spinnaker coupled with a rapidly descending high pressure zone, adds more than a thousand miles to the adventure.......

“I guess this is my way of challenging that”... couldn’t have said that any better! I was asked almost the same question, “Why do you want to sail around the world?” My answer was, because it scares me and tests me. So keep facing the challenge!

Patrick, you are such a fantastic sailor and storyteller. I must also say, besides excellent camera work, you, a master captured just the right sound of the waves and the gurgling sound of your stern - it feels like I'm on board with you. No silly background music, just you and the ocean. Thanks for that. Cheers.

An appropriate quote for you all on... Good sailing.."To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea..."cruising" it is called.Voyaging belongs to seamen,and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change.Only then will you know what the sea is all about. "'I've always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can't afford it." What these men can't afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of "security." And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine and before we know it our lives are gone. What does a man need really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter,six feet to lie down in -and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all- in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade. The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? choice.! "Which shall it be: bankruptcyof purse or bankruptcy of life...? Sterling Hayden

I’m 51 and I get that feeling often that maybe the best years have gone by. Or more accurately I want to ensure the best years are in the future. And that’s why I’ve chosen to sail the world soon. I found a fabulous wife that’s going to accompany me on that journey. Our business is close to being built that will fund the adventure. Thank you for your videos. I sailed a couple times in boy scout summer camp so I’m depending on KZfaq videos to learn, as silly as that sounds. I’ve already learned much about the craft in a short time watching you and I appreciate your calm demeanor when experiencing difficult circumstances. Hopefully I can model the same behavior and stay above water. Cheers.

“Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by. And I guess this is my way of challenging that.” ~Patrick Lane That is the best reply that comes to my mind, which as I get older seems to spring more and more leaks, that I can recall. Thank you for putting it so perfectly Patrick. I've been watching your videos for several years, we, we've been watching them, my soon to be wife and I. Great part 1 of your crossing. Just a comment about priming fuel. I have plumbed in a squeeze bulb into my fuel line supply between water separator and engine fuel filter. Makes priming a breeze and no more digging around the engine while underway. People say that they are not rated for diesel, but they are inexpensive and I change them out every 2 years. In a pinch you can always keep pumping to keep engine running if fuel pump on engine fails. Fair winds.

As a Rigger i would never have the Spinnaker reeved thru the fairlead that came off the mast, that fairlead is used on a roller furler so that the halyard that hoisted the swivel does not wrap around the fore stay if it is parallel with the forestay, the spinnaker halyard should be run thru a swivel block attached to a crane attached to the top of the mast.
@patricklaine6958
@patricklaine6958 2 жыл бұрын
I've just discussed this with the local Selden people. The fairlead was poorly engineered/attached, but not a bad idea. It is a fractional rig, and in addition, the top of the mast did not have a swivel block --- so the floating spinnaker would definitely result in chafe on the halyard, which would eventually end in tears. They will install a much better set-up for me.
