So I was a Yankee kid who had just moved to Toronto in 1977. Some kids in my class invited me to a Halloween party and gave me the address. I was so excited that maybe I made some new friends. I showed up at the house in my costume and rang the doorbell. The door opened and it was Gordon Lightfoot. There was no party. I had been pranked. I think Gordon could see the disappointment on my face and was very kind to me. He gave me a quick little tour of his home and showed me his practice space and guitars. I'll never forget that moment of kindness. Thank you Gordon.

I was actually lucky eno to see him in January of 22 before he passed away. I had bought the tickets before COVID and it was rescheduled like 19 times but I got lucky and they finally performed. Granted his voice wasn't anything like this it he was in his mid 80's. Couple of fun facts about Gordon the song sundown is about his ex girlfriend Kathy who was cheating on him with his so called friends. She later went on to inject coke and H into John Belushi and cause his overdose. Also the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was recorded live in the first take. It was the first time his band had ever played the song and they were just watching him for the changes and improvising. he told the drummer to hold of and he would let him know when to come in and he came up with that badass little fill for the drum intro and the guitar riff was made up on the spot. They tried to recording it around 10 time and couldn't ever even come close to the first one. It was just magic

Gordo at the peak of his popularity. "Sundown", the title track from his recently-released album, would go on to top the Billboard Hot 100 later that year. IMO, Gordo missed a trick in choosing to perform both “The List” and “High and Dry” from his new _Sundown_ album on the show - but _not_ "Carefree Highway"! Released as the followup single to "Sundown", "Carefree Highway" peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November '74.

Gordon hit it really big at the start of '74, only months after the Jim Croce tragedy, folk/pop needed another hero and although Gordon had been around writing and recording for over a decade (songs like Early Morning Rain for Peter, Paul & Mary), he seemed to fill the musical gap from Croce's loss for the mid '70's ('74-'76). Pat & Lolly Vegas of Redbone had been working since the early '60's and appeared on Shin-Dig...that's how far back they go. They had a minor early 1972 hit with 'Witch Queen Of New Orleans' and they initially fused rock with Cajun pop/rock and lots of funky grooves (like CCR but dirtier and funkier). 'Come and get your Love' from their 1973 LP 'Wovoka' would be their biggie, reaching #5 in April of '74. They continued to record and tour but never had another follow-up hit. I didn't think Ravi Shankar was still a big draw by the mid '70's, I always think of him as a late '60's/early '70's artist due to his George Harrison association. The late great Tommy Bolin with the James Gang. Tommy played on the popular jazz/rock fusion album Spectrum w drummer Billy Cobham in late 1973, he would leave J.G. and tour w Deep Purple before an all too brief solo career that ended tragically in Miami in Dec. '76. His song 'Someday We'll Bring Our Love Home' is so haunting and telling.

This season of Midnight Special really was the peak of the entire series, before it devolved into almost total MOR and Disco (though even in that later, much lesser period there were still occasional musical highlights). There was some very fine stuff that came out during the post-hippie 70s, much of which, thankfully, MS managed to showcase. A time capsule of an era that I can guarantee you will never see again.

If there was only 1 episode of Midnight Special to survive and represent the show, this is the one! the definitive episode. What a lineup! The Guess Who, James Gang, Redbone etc.. wow! And the legendary Gordon Lightfoot as host and performing as well!

Tommy’s band Zephyr appeared on American Bandstand in early 1970. I think Kirshner’s Rock Concert, Midnight Special & Bandstand were the only American national music shows Tommy appeared on. Would be cool to see the Bandstand appearance clip even if Zephyr didn’t actually play “Cross The River” live.

Yep! They were sure ROCKIN’ OUT!! 😅 I’ve never seen this before - flat out Kickin’ it into HIGH gear! Made me kinda think of Edgar Winter & his otherworldly “sounds”, at the very end part.

This seems like yesterday I watched this on TV. It was 50 years ago now, so crazy. So many of these wonderful people are gone now. At least their music will live forever.

Oh my, that’s a very interesting story I too wish, she’d have lived to see this with you. What a beautiful name she had and a gorgeous tender song sung straight from the heart. The perfume part gets to me & can’t imagine such tender lyrics written for and about “yourself”, a glorious tune! 💕💕💕

For anyone bemused by the monologue "The Americans" at 51:48, it's a radio editorial by the Canadian media personality Gordon Sinclair that went 'viral', as we would say today. Originally aired on June 5, 1973 on Toronto talk-radio station CFRB, this rendition by Byron MacGregor sold 3.5 million copies and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of February 9, 1974.
