It’s time to address something we haven’t really talked about before on the vlog, which is the circumstance surrounding why we left our home town of St. John’s, Newfoundland and ended up in Buffalo, New York. Or more accurately, how we were forced to leave our home town because of the manipulations of one individual. Last week CBC did a story on what happened and blew open the scandal. Now that it’s public, we felt it was a good time to explain a bit more about how we dealt with the situation and what to do when life gives you lemons.

Hey, Chris, just imagine for a second that this didn’t happen and you ended up working with those people.... how would your life be three months for now...I think you are lucky that you don’t have to work for them. Yes, it sucks working on another place that you didn’t plan, but most likely you will end up working with people that appreciate your dedication. good luck!

Just prior to watching this I had told my son about the two of you and how exceptional Chris was for doing his year of training in Vancouver and at the same time getting his pilots licence. Some people chose to live inside a small box and can not see outside of it. You two continually expand the limits of your limitless experience, you truly are exceptional. Canada's loss, perhaps one day you will return.

Sounds like a good way for Eastern Health to broadcast that they have toxic expectations of lack of work life balance for their employees. Big bullet dodged and a warning for others.

As a Canadian, knowing that someone who is highly educated and was going to return to an underserved community but instead had to find another job and went to America resulting in our health system losing yet another specialist is outrageous. I know you don’t want people feeling bad for you, but I am very sorry.

Thanks for sharing your story! I also work in health care and one thing I learned very early on is the importance of doing the things that make you happy outside of work. Your work day can be stressful and hectic so you need something to help you cope with those days. It's unfortunate that this employer didn't respect that work/life balance! It's great to see that you guys have made the most of the situation and thanks for sharing the experience!

Just happened upon your channel primarily due to the Helo references, but quickly became hooked and have been binge watching. Both of you are extremely talented individuals and have a uncanny ability to produce outstanding videos. Your "Lemon" situation is being repeated throughout the USA and world on a daily basis. I applaud you for your successes. Keep up the great work....You both have infectious smiles and personalities! .... Now I will get back to the vids I have missed and get caught up.

I think these stories are so important to tell because I feel like the younger generation is seeing this more frequently. I think the simple dumbed down version is that older people don’t understand the internet. I know it’s more nuanced but I think seeing how people get through it is important.

I found you guys' channel about a week ago and I've been binging your videos ever since starting from the very beginning. I LOVE you guys and after watching this one I love you even more. What struck me more than anything else when watching this was that both of you used the word "we" over and over when talking about the whole situation. Chris didn't say "...if I would find a job" he said "...if WE would find a job." You guys are an inspiration and that's coming from someone who has been very happily married for 25 years. Keep it up!

Thank you so much or sharing this. I really appreciate the way that you are choosing to view this crappy situation and taking the positive out of it. It is hard to hear from someone that is in a position of power in your field that your not good enough but I think that there are others that are saying the total opposite (it looks that way to me from your Dr. Jon & Dr. Chris videos). Keep up all of your great work.

Sending you guys tons of love and support! As some that works in healthcare (I’m a pharmacist) but who also loves to create content online, I seek out creators like you guys for inspiration. Love your vlogs. I can’t believe what you went through. People’s day jobs and careers are part of them, but a fraction. People that work in medicine need outlets and interests beyond their career to prevent burnout and frankly, to be a well rounded human. People’s hobbies have always been there, it’s just that social media gives them a more prominent focus. Thank you for sharing and I want to make some delicious effin lemonade now.

It is so important to be well rounded and balanced. I am from the East coast as well. I think the mentality of securing a job at home is literally gold and you should appreciate it and sacrifice everything else to hold that job is so prevalent there. My husband and I recently moved to British Columbia, aside from missing our families, we are happy to be able to work and choose the type of work we like. I read the CBC article earlier this week. I'm glad you addressed this on your vlog, that mentality needs to change.

I worked in a Boston area hospital with many great doctors, nurses and other great hospital staff. Some of the more (older) senior staff especially department doctors or administrative staff that might have great reputation in there field have a hard time adjusting to the fast changes of the real world. You guys are doing great. The medical field is hard. Only because you can not make mistakes. In school mistakes cost grade point. In business it cost money. In the medical field it cost lives. Sometimes the upper staff loses site that you have a life. That is because they did not have one when they started. Do not beat yourself up because someone can not see your potential. It is there loss. Keep up the good work. Great channel. Very up beat. Thanks

Becki and Chris I have been following you since maybe 1000 subscribers. As someone in the healthcare business myself I am not surprised that this happened back home in Newfoundland. I love home but will never work there. I have even spoken to Doctors who refuse to work there. Eastern Health is destroying hospitals and staff there. They are not only doing it to highly skilled physicians but to Nurses as well. I myself will never work there. Instead of paying good Doctors to move there they instead bring in poorly trained physicians from countries like Africa. It's very sad and the government is doing nothing about it. Keep up the great work and I hope I meet you guys someday. Cheers.

I was pretty far along in the hiring process for a job years ago and then was abruptly eliminated from consideration because I was questioned the company policy of having to disclose any other work I do outside of the office on my own time (nights and weekends). Essentially I couldn't freelance, a rule I was opposed to. The company said that they were "making an investment in me and expected that I would be fully dedicated to the job," which apparently meant even in my private life they owned me. This mentality is sadly common, that what people do in their own time is somehow not only the business of the company you work for, but also subject to their scrutiny and criticism. It's even worse online, in social media, content creation, etc. I'm not sure what the answer even is, other than just having to wait for this antiquated way of thinking to slowly purge fade out of existence.

It's a generational difference. I almost lost my current job over it. The older generation just doesn't get the reality of social media. Glad to see you making the best of it.

I so appreciate you posting this video. I am going through something similar literally as I write this, and I only discovered you guys and your channel just a short time ago. I hope everything worked out well, Chris, and I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. If you have any advice, please let me know. I love doing photography, and I am recently getting back into it. I'm a family practice physician, and I've never done anything with youtube before, but just started a channel today about physician burnout. If you have any advice regarding that as well, please let me know! You guys are awesome, and I love your photography and other videos. Peace and Love! Eric--

That’s ridiculous-I’ve been a subscriber since the Vancouver days and I remember how obvious it was how much you worked and how seriously you took your job. Good grief! It was a recurring theme! Come on! And honestly I want my doctors to have lives outside of work-no one wants someone who doesn’t have a life, isn’t able to unwind on their off hours. That’s not healthy and not sustainable. Anyway, I’m sorry this happened to you guys.

Hey guys! First of all, I'll add "at the moment" to your words. Everything might change! And! I like you so much, I'm interested in what you say. You're so real and cool. If a person is not crazy, he can clearly see, that you're professionals.

You guys had mentioned this once on the vlog before, but I didn't understand the weight of the situation until now. It's a crazy crappy thing that happened to you, but I admire your guys ability to step back and look at the big picture. Whenever a shituation happens to me in life, I try to ask myself "But, did I die?" 😂Love you guys and this channel so much!!

Clearly this person doesn't watch your content... otherwise they'd know how much you care/love/enjoy your profession! Their loss and sounds like you ultimately dodged a bullet working for someone who could potentially make your life miserable on a daily basis... still stinks though, I live 12hrs away from my family so I have an idea and it's tough. Sad to hear you had to go through all that... silver linings are nice, but only real after you go through something that produces them. Props to you two for the perseverance that got you two where you are now! Internet high five for the two of you being you... thanks for sharing!

Really enjoyed the video, love how you put it all out there. It’s unfortunate that your employer chose to go this route with you because you had a hobby. We should all have creative outlets from our day jobs.

This is such a good perspective on how life circumstances can really alter your trajectory. I just got planted in Wyoming, which is beautiful, but was not a part of my plan. My grandfather passed away and my grandmother lives on this huge ranch and needs help selling everything and moving and I was literally on the road to travel for the next year and changed paths about 3 weeks into my trip. But I am healthy, my grandmother is healthy, and my life really isn't bad it's just different. You guys are an amazing duo! Thanks for this!

i think when ppl look in on other ppl's lives so deeply it's out of a vacancy in their own, and rather than focus on how they could achieve what they envy, they'd rather just find reasons to punch holes in someone else.

I feel for you guys I had my phlebotomy/cna job taken away from me due to me getting injured and my employer just out right not Liking me. They wouldn’t give any work essentially making me quit sense they can’t fire me legally and leaving me with a back injury that now requires surgery. Luckily your vids made me really want to do video something I’ve always been interested in and make a life career out of it.
