EP 57 Solo Sail Bermuda to St Pierre, France

  Рет қаралды 64,872

Patrick Laine

2 жыл бұрын

I sail a 1000 NM passage in fairly sporty conditions from Bermuda to two small French islands off the southern coast of Newfoundland (St Pierre et Miquelon). I discuss/demo my technique for putting in a reef while headed downwind (and welcome ways to improve). As I approach Newfoundland, an aggressive front arrives at the same time, and rather than argue with mother nature, I hove to (park at sea) for 18 hours.

Hello Patrick, I have two ideas for you. The lazy jack lines along your main sail are hanging around. Open the system, put the lines around a clamp at the mast and tighten them. No more hanging around, no more noisy sounds from them…… when you need them just open them again. Second safety Idea for all solo sailors. The furler line stowed over the reeling, do it always the other way around, so when you grab it not from the outside, no from the inside from the cockpit. You donˋt have to lean over. Cheers Anthony

Newfoundland has a viking settlement , created as they sailed from Greenland, most confirmed southerly point in the americas I believe . I am certain other viking boats would have ended further south into west indies and beyond fascinating subject :)
