ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZfaq channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on KZfaq, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Hey Marc, we are thinking of going here on our way to Denver in June. Want to see the sand dunes. 36 bucks seems like a deal. Larry

It definitely is, Larry -- even more so for a Coloradoan who can use the pass throughout the camping season. However, still -- even for a short term it's a great deal.

One addendum Marc. If you have a fishing or hunting license for Colo. you've paid for Wildlife area use. I only got to the Sand Pit parking lot on the 4wd road. It was a busy road going both ways.

Excellent point, and one that didn't hit me until I'd already finished editing and rendered the final video, so I didn't feel like going back to do itall over again just to add the point about the fishing or hunting licenses! LOL Thanks for pointing that out. When I bought the $36 annual pass I asked about the fishing license but that would've been $56 for an out-of-stater. I'm actually surprised to hear about the traffic and congestion on that road, it makes me grateful that we experienced it the way that we did.
@rambling_rob7035
@rambling_rob7035 6 жыл бұрын
I should also add that when you get a fishing or hunting license, you pay an 25 cent fee for Search and Rescue. What that means is if you're in a situation and you need SAR you won't be charged if you have a license. You can also buy a Recreation Pass for $3 for a year which also cover SAR. Re: fish license. Co is one of the cheaper out-of-state $. I'm a flyfisher and love the creeks of Co.

@GrandAdventure 6 жыл бұрын
@@rambling_rob7035 no doubt, I was surprised that it was only $56 but as we were leaving Colorado after this stop, it was still $20 more than the SWA pass.

You do have a talent for finding great boondocking camp spots and showcase them well. Free electric is good. Thanks for sharing! The Wildlife Area looks to be rather bare. Is it geared to protecting any particular wildlife species? I saw your comment that the trailer alignment was checked previously so I hope you will let us know later if it is now out of alignment. If it is ok, then the next thing that comes to mind is checking the weights. The new Goodyear Endurance has been getting good reviews so that sounds like a good choice. My trailer is about 26 ft and is a little under 7,000 lbs down the road. It came with ST205/75R15 tires. I upgraded those long ago and am now running the newer Carlisle Radial Trail ST235/75R15 with good success. I will probably be replacing them next year and will go with the same size in either the Carlisle Radial Trail HD or the new Goodyear Endurance, depending on price and availability. A general guide I use for ST tire quality is the speed rating. For years it was 65 mph. That changed a few years ago with the new designs. The Carlisle is rated about 81 mph and the Endurance is about 87 mph. My assumption is an 80 mph rated tire is a higher quality tire than a 65 mph tire. Quality tires are more expensive but I concluded it is money well spent after experiencing a blow out with one of the original tires when heading southbound on I-95 near Richmond, VA. Changing a tire along side of one of the busiest interstates in the country does not make for a fun morning! I am looking forward to watching your next Grand Adventure.

Thanks as always, Bruce! Yep, the SWA is barren indeed -- the lake, however, serves as ground for waterfowl and other birds. I've been very happy with the Endurance until this incident -- we've been using them for a year. Hope you had no damage from that I-95 blowout! In our case we were very lucky. (And in case anyone is wondering, Bruce is referencing some of our social media posts that will be reflected in Ep. 64, which is forthcoming in ~2 weeks.)

Thanks for the update on the wildlife area. It is good to know the State of Colorado is looking after our feathered friends. Damage from my blow out was minimal. Luckily, a few screws tightened everything back up. I first noticed the blowout looking in the side mirror and immediately wondered where are all of those pieces of rubber coming from! The tire was a Goodyear Marathon original design. It turned out to be a faultily design. Goodyear updated the design by adding a nylon belt to control the expansion and contraction which was pulling the rubber away from the steel belt. My previous reference to your comments was to one of your replies in this KZfaq video postings. I was not aware of your social media posts till now and so I went and looked. I see the new Endurance did not endure! Ouch. If you think it was due to some fault of the tire manufacture, then consider reporting it to the Dept of Transportation. They use these reports to look for trends and if spotted, they will proceed with an investigation. Hopefully your failure is not a common fault with the tire. I will be watching for episode 64. I've seen where blowouts resulted in a lot of damage to the RV so I was glad to read you were lucky which I assume means there was not much damage. Between the hail and tires, you are having some challenges on this trip. I guess that is part of being on the road.

Another great Marc. What's up with the tire wear?
@GrandAdventure

Honestly I'm not sure. I'm guessing that they had ~15K miles on them, and after I had them installed last year I immediately drove straight to an alignment shop that specializes in trailers, semis, etc and had it aligned. Maybe it got thrown out of alignment on a rough road or something? I'll have it aligned again when I get back to SLC.

Does the state parks pass count towards staying at that area? Also do you remember where you filled your water up at?
@GrandAdventure

We got water right there, Emily. They had a dump station still open with potable water. You'd have to check with the state to see what's valid or not there, however. We had to buy a DWR permit nearby.

I was wondering about the $36.00 you paid for the annual pass. We will be heading that way in about a week so I was going to buy one before we left but the website says its $70.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 5 жыл бұрын
They're two different passes. The $70 is a State Parks pass, while the $36 is a State Wildlife Areas pass. The latter I could not find anywhere online, but is sold anywhere that sells Colorado hunting/fishing licenses. Enjoy your trip, and safe travels!
