Sailing Sula

3 жыл бұрын

We collect our new boat, Sula, a Hanse 385, from Shieldaig and sail her back down the West coast of Scotland to Largs, 260 nautical miles. This episode takes us from Shieldaig to the Isle of Kerrera (Oban), the first 3 days of our 7 day trip in July 2020.
Out of Loch Torridon we sailed South past Skye, through the Kyle Rhea, around the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, down the Sound of Mull and across the Firth of Lorn.
We were more focused on the challenge of sailing and navigation but managed to get a few nice shots. Hope you enjoy.

Nice one guys. I'm sure we must have passed you at some point. We headed off on our 4 week trip in our Hanse 320 from James Watt Dock at the start of July. Made it up to Rona via Sound of Mull and lots of stops on the way then back down via Coll, the Treshnish Isles and Sounds of Iona and Islay before going back round The Mull. The rain in your video brings back memories. The Med it ain't but the splendor of isolated anchorages and stunning scenery more than makes up for the changeable weather conditions.

Great video, we bought our 385 in Kip in 2012, spent 4 fab years off the west coast of Scotland including this trip you have done here, Summer in the Outer Hebrides winter in the Clyde. Eventually we sailed through the Great Glen and across the North Sea into the Baltic for two seasons then back across the North sea to the South coast of England. The Hanse 385 is a fab boat in all conditions you will have so much fun. It is very nostalgic for me to watch this, it was our first large cruising yacht too.

What a delightful video, bringing back memories to me and friends that chartered Sula in August 2017. ( Lots of rain but few midges) A Lovely boat well kept. ( Look out for the pin at the foot of the furling, make sure it is moussed on ) We had to rig a temporary fix, tying the furling gear in place enabling it to work furling the sail.) All the best wishes to you on your new boat. A Lovely craft.

Hey great filming. Great to see this brilliant view of Scotland. Beautiful. The yacht looks very familiar for us in our Hanse 345, similar age I think as we are also with Z-Spars, which they have now changed to Selden. We are now in the Clyde too (Portavadie). Our boom-vang was originally positioned like yours, but we turned it the other way up as it stays drier inside and is correct by the manufacturer. Large diameter to the top. Also fitted a wee spacer inside to give it is bit more spring, in case relevant. See you out on water soon!

In heavy weather, bring your liferaft below decks, friend. Too many times they get swept off and into the darkness before they are needed. Also, if you are motor-sailing, don't let the ship lean over too far or the engine can be oil-starved.... been there, done that, and regretted it. You were NOT leaning too far, but it is something to watch. If you do not know the marina, then just moor to a hammer-head and go see someone that knows it better. Come in slow, get the ship stopped, tied up, and argue about it later. The only time it ever gets risky is if there is a stiff tail-wind behind you. Owning a boat is a long learning curve. You are doing well.

Thank you for such an excellent insight into the beauty of the Western Isles. Your video series are very well presented. I'm sure many more cruisers will wish to visit as a consequence. We certainly will. We notice that you use the Admiralty Folio 5616. Are you able to say where you obtained the "ring-binder" and acetate sheets? Seems a very efficient way of handling Charts.

@@SailingSula Yes stern first can be helpful. Make sure you understand about prop walk and prop wash, and can turn the boat 360 in her own length using those. Also plenty of fenders are a good insurance policy. One thing I noticed when you were casting off your bow line was you had the line through the pontoon cleat instead of round it, and then threw the line onto the pontoon to pull it clear - an excellent way of getting an accidental knot behind the cleat and remaining fast to the dock when you're committed to leaving. Finally try using a lasso to catch the pontoon cleats from the boat when arriving at a mooring. You can be 2 or 3 metres from the pontoon and be being blown off, and yet still make it safely that way, and also no need to risk someone jumping from the boat to the pontoon. I'm an RYA instructor and seen and experienced lots of mooring incidents. You could save yourself a lot of money in the long term if you have some boat handling tuition. Anyway good luck with the new boat. It looks idyllic sailing in those beautiful waters with your brother. I've done quite a few miles in the Hebrides myself.
