Looks like we have our work cut out restoring this 70 year old London Bus as we find more problems when we start stripping the engine. In this episode we continue working on our latest restoration project - RT2629 is London double decker bus built in 1951.
What does it take to keep a London double decker bus on the road?
Filmed in the UK at the Routemaster 4 Hire HQ in Wrexham, North Wales we are passionate about London buses and with 7 vintage buses in the fleet we defiantly have our work cut out!
Also don't forget to check-out all our London bus restoration videos in this playlist...

Another great one, you may laugh at rubber pistons but I knew a bloke who bought a Kawasaki triple 2 stroke back in the 80's, it had a misfire, 'probably a plug or lead' said the seller...... Lifting the head some weeks later revealed a green tennis ball, cut down and fitted over the conrod on the centre cylinder..... 👍

It's interesting to see how engine design has moved on since about 80 years ago when this originated. The size looks enormous, and the power output of around 100BHP must give a quite low power to weight ratio for this engine (compared to modern designs). Having said all that, the sound of the RT's AEC engine can't be beaten! Well done guys for keeping another piece of history in working order.

It was another era. Old school diesels could take a lot of abuse before throwing their toys out of the pram. They'll run quite happily forever on used mazola cooking oil. Modern, turbo boosted, common rail engines are great when they work but a nightmare when they decide not to.

During RT engine changes in bus garages, we would not be expected to completely strip down the engine unit. LT Chiswick works, would send down a fully rebuilt and reworked unit for staff to fit. Our day foreman would check the dates on the vehicles log card, to see when individual units had been fitted to the engine. We would fit as many new or reconditioned parts as we could. Including fuel pump, injectors and pipes. Complete fluid flywheel unit. (Two halves, driven and driving members.) With a new roller race fitted. (This unit would be pressure tested when attached to the crankshaft. Coolant hoses, throttle clevis pins, and the correct fuel pump bed. (There was two different types I believe) After all it was plain sailing, and two men were allocated one days work for the complete job, and no come backs. Cheers.👍 lads.

Wow, first time I got to see an AEC getting torn down. Not for an OCD person! There was a range of tools made by Metrinch with sockets and spanners with a patented design so each socket could handle both a metric and imperial hex. As well as SAE, they are designed to grip British standard sizes as well. They may be worth getting a hold of.

hi, great video, how was engine allowed to get like this ? or did it come straight from LT, cant wait to see a gleaming engine with new oil in it, the 11,3 litre a223 looked the same except larger and went in the Militant mk1, remember doing them at AEC.
@timhines6543
@timhines6543 Жыл бұрын
This engine has sat about for numorous years but came out of a fire engine so the treatment would have been different. LT never used antifreeze which has corrosion inhibitor which would prevent some of the silt and corrosion in the block. It looks worse than it is. Another RT I did recently was far worse than this so I bet most are the same.

Makes me wonder why the RT ever went out of production, loved them at Brentwood back in the day.
@highpath4776
@highpath4776 Жыл бұрын
Roughtly the cost per seat of an RM was cheaper (and most of the actual increased cost was fitting a heater to the RM - The RTs having none). The plan was also to use less RMs to replace RTs but unions objected (also economic studies show reducing frequencies reduces the likelyhood of would be passengers waiting for a bus and they take another means of transport. Fewer bigger buses were unwisely used on the Brentwood and South Essex Green Line routes ( so hard fought for by General from Hillman of Romford pre WW2 ). which with upgrades to the Central Line and Fenchurch electrics meant even fewer passengers into Aldgate and Victoria. For some reason Eastern National's (ex City) Use of Lodekkas still kept their 251/351 services running well until the days of the Bristol VRs.
