Just rewatched the episode this morning. It is incredibly entertaining (as is your podcast) and so full of memorable moments and quotes. I myself, am fortunate to have a clock exactly like the one on the top shelf to the far right of Jabez Wilson's head, when he is sat down in his pawn shop. It used to be my mother's but she gave it to me. Roger Hammond is wonderful as Jabez but the one thing I can never get over, is the fact that they allowed that matte painting (if you can call it that) of St. Paul's to be used! It is unbelievably sh...oddy and quite a three pipe problem to try and understand how and why!

The first episode my husband showed me was The Speckled Band and it was a great introduction. Next was the Musgrave Ritual, also very great one to see early on. One of my favorite episodes is The Second Stain, so that's a bummer that she wasn't hooked after seeing it. Blue Carbuncle is of course another favorite and not so depressing... so would always choose that to recommend to people as well.

Interestingly, Roger Hammond (Jabez Wilson) and Tim McInnerny (John Clay) were reunited in 1995's "Richard III", which also featured Denis Lill (Inspector Bradstreet), Andy Rashleigh (bearded Constable Z 94 from "The Norwood Builder") and none other than Edward Hardwicke. I may have to give that one a look.

On the 3 pipes in 50 minutes, I do this quite a lot. When the bowl gets too hot and distateful, I eject the remains of the tobacco and reload. Given the small bowl of the pipe in the show, 3 fills is pretty normal. I remember a scene in another show where Holmes tips a bunch of Baccy out of his pipe, so it looks like he's in the habit of never smoking a full bowlful :-)

"L'homme c'est rien, l'oeuvre c'est tout" - this Flaubert quote from Conan Doyle is perfectly well delivered by Jeremy Brett (to my ears at least, and French is my second language). Doyle's quote, though, differs slightly from Flaubert's original words: "L'homme n'est rien, l'oeuvre - tout" . But both mean the same : "Man is nothing, the work - all..."

@AMT George Sand (pseudonym for Aurore Dupin - so it's a lady!) and Gustave Flaubert were both very influential French novelists of the 19th century. They started a lively correspondence in 1862 - Sand first wrote a letter to Flaubert in praise of his novel "Sallamb", and a lively exchange of letters followed until Sand's death in 1876. You can find several editions of the Sand-Flaubert correspondence...

both Watsons are excellent, the first few episodes with Burke are kind of jarring if watching the episodes in quick succession, but there's no episode where I tell myself I wish the other was playing the part. On the other hand, the episode where Mycroft has a prominent role in solving the case and Sherlock has little screen time is easily my least favorite of the series

I love the way that the (relatively) small number of extras in the interview scene are blocked to maximize the chaos, especially the brilliant use of the stairwell. As to the omission of Freemasonry, I bet that since John Hector McFarland was a Freemason just two episodes earlier, they probably thought it would call too much attention to itself. Thanks as always gentlemen!

A note on the clay pipe problem. The pipe style is called a Cutty, and is not only available made of Clay. Given that the pipe in the series appears to have an Ebonite stem, which is never used with a Clay bowl, I think it's probably a Black wooden bowl. I have numerous pipes of that colour, and have a wooden bowled Cutty, which I bought in honour of Holme's pipe. Sadly, I couldn't get it in Bl;ack.

@AMT Thanks! I like it. It's a damn shame that the pipe was too expensive, as I could refinish it to be Black. Can't face doing it, though! Maybe I'll cobble together a black cutty from eBay pipe parts 😊 Do you have any Sherlockian stuff?

@AMT Great stuff! I'm a pipe smoker of many years, and I can recommend it as a hobby. It's safer than cigarettes and cigars, as you aren't meant to inhale it into your lungs. It's all in the nose and mouth. There is a risk of mouth cancer, but this can be removed by keeping the mouth moist with a drink of some sort, after you smoke. I got myself a Calabash about a year ago. It does give the coolest smoke of any pipe I've tried, except maybe the Hookah water pipe. I prefer Meerschaum pipes to Briar, but they're all good in their own way. One of my favourite pipe smokers was Lee Van Cleefe. If you watch the western 'For a few dollars more' you'll see him smoking his favourite meerschaum, and there's a scene where he lights his pipe in a way that nearly gets him shot 😀 If you have any questions about pipes, I'd be happy to help.

@AMT They're still making them in the traditional way, in Turkey. It has a removable Meerschaum bowl, and a genuine Gourd cooling chamber, just like the old ones.

@AMT I have to say that I haven't noticed much difference in heat. They are lighter than Briar, and you don't have to burn them in, like Briar. They go a lovely yellow colour, after a lot of smoking. You can get some fantastic carved ones.

@AMT I particularly like the Aromatic blends. My top one is Burberry premium edition, by Planta. It's a rich, scrumptious smelling tobacco, almost like fruit cake. My second favourite is Dunhill Elizabethan mixture (now made by Peterson's). This one is meant to be the same blend that Sir Walter Raleigh brought back to England, from his travels . And last but not least, my third favourite is Sherlock Holmes blend, by Peterson's again. This is Peterson's attempt at replicating Holme's favourite blend. You can't go wrong with Peterson's tobacco, really.
