I am a RC model builder and have been so starting in the late 50s. I love building and flying model airplanes. I really enjoy watching your videos. I learned so much from your videos even thought I have been in the hobby for years. I use to build my RC equipment, I retired with Hewlett Packard as a Customer Engineer. I am a Ham radio operator, but model airplanes are my passion. Like you I love model airplanes and enjoy just looking at plans. I collect plans just to look at them. I am building a Walt Good TTPW system just for fun. I am a member of the Vintage Model Airplane Society and was an Advertising manager for the group .I love vintage models of the 50s and 60s. I have a collection of Brown Jr, engines. Keep up the great work!

Part of the fun of this hobby is the many different kinds of aircraft, military civilian, golden age, vintage, jets, multi engine, ww1, etc. etc. Its really cool to see that spark of what interests a modeler. Glad you are enjoying my videos. That’s my spark.

when i glue my doublers on i use tupperware containers filled with sand, also i drill small hole in the plywood doubler to allow thumb tacks to pass through to the balsa, keeping it from slading

I suggest a spreader stick for the glue spreading. Fingers covered in glue prevent oneopening the Iphone print reader & computerprint reader. Seems that they have difficulty reading through dried glue.

I know what you are talking about. Sometimes you can register several fingers prints so maybe you can pick one that didn’t get gooshed as much. I really should use latex gloves when the glue is going to flow.

Sprinkle some salt on the glue and the part won’t move

Try tacking the two pieces in place with CA. You mate the surfaces together with white glue and then add the CA at one end of the doubler. You can also leave an area without white glue where you can put a few drops of CA. I have heard of other people using salt but I have also heard that it doesn't work well. Besides you want the glue to be as thin as possible and bonded to the entire surface to be strong.

Great job, Dan. Wonderful series of videos. But you've misread the plans, buddy. There is no error in the plans. The fuselage sides are two pieces by design (because they're longer than 48 inches), with the splice at the aft edge of F7. The top view clearly shows a solid line through the fuselage sides there. And butt splices are typically reinforced by doublers. That's the main reason the doublers are there, and why they're so big. Note the other lines extending across the fuselage sides in the top view are dotted, or incomplete, meaning the parts are beneath the fuselage sides. Thanks and keep up the good work. Love the cat.

I'll have to go back and look at it again. What you point out makes perfect sense. Using the doubler as a joiner/reinforcer. But on the plans that were published in the magazine, there was an inconsistancy. I'll see if I can find it.

I really like the gorilla wood glue. I'm using it on a P-51 build right now.

you were supposed to cut it on an angle from the sheet .... 6feet long (72inches) and 48 wide allows for a 50 inch piece to be cut as ONE piece ... you could literally cut both sides from one sheet with no bodge patch job ... you can btw cut all 4 pieces from that ONE sheet .. IF none are taller than 12 inches ... 4 sides by a max of 72 inches works fine ... if it was 2 feet tall per side then 2 sides per sheet ...

Dan, I know it’s been a year since this video. I’ve just subscribed. Great content. Do you know if Ryan was contacted about this discrepancy or lack of mentioning? He’s a distant cousin of mine that I recently met at the flying club I am wanting to join.

Hi Nathan!!!! Yes I did contact Ryan Gonsulin just as I was starting this build on video via email. He gave me some insight as to what he was thinking as he designed this plane, suggested I not use the 42cc I had originally planned to use as he used a Ryobi 31 conversion with and it had plenty of power. So during the construction of this and after several comments from viewers like you I dropped the 42cc and have the Dle 30 which he suggested at the time. As for the discrepancy, Im guessing you are talking about that line where the fuse is extended a bit. It took me a while to realize that Ryan attached a doubler over the joint because there is a line through the doubler on the published plan. But hey, every plan has little issues so no big deal. I did notice on the redrawn ACAD version that someone made, there is no line through the doublers. That’s pretty cool that you have a designer in the fam. I still think this plan is perfect for someone to start scratch building. He made it super easy to understand and a super clean plan. Hope you get into the club. Do they have some tricky initiation you need to do to get in? Secret handshake? Have fun!!!

Dan, enjoy the videos, where do you find balsa for the fuse sides?
@Capgains7777
@Capgains7777 4 жыл бұрын
All of the balsa in this build came from National Balsa. The sides are a wierd and expensive sized piece of wood. I went ahead and bought the 8 inch wide pieces just for the sake of matching the build list... But if you can't find them, an option would be to edge glue a couple of 4 inch or even 3, 3 inch x 48. Butt edge joining is not easy the longer the joint is. Just a slight warp in the wood will create a tension that could wreck the flatness of the assembled piece. But maybe you are better than me at it. :)
