In this interview I am joined by John Maki Evans, teacher of Japanese swordsmanship, practitioner of several syncretic esoteric Japanese disciplines, and author of ‘Kurikara: The Sword and the Serpent’.
John recalls aspects of his intense training in Japan, traces his lifetime spent uncovering the higher esoteric dimensions of the Japanese arts, and details the 9 stage journey from novice to master.
John maps the subtle body and its correspondences to the five elements and the dragon king protectors known as nāgarāja, explains the demands of following the inner path of transformation, and considers the special role of the sword in religious life.
John also reflects on the process of opening the body and mind, recovery from severe back and brain injuries, and on the dangers of reaching your spiritual goals.

What a remarkable interview. Thank you for giving John the space he needed to speak. So many interviewers rush in to impress instead of letting the silence breathe like you just did. The sequel will be well worth waiting for.

That was really fascinating. Apart from the historic connection... Had not heard much abt the Indian tantra connect with Japanese swordmanship... Was really nice to see some of the connections he made!

Great talk! Synchronicity for me given I learn the Taichi Sword since 2 years and it's a fascinating but a scary transformation too. So I really resonate with the students quitting given transformation and transition.

Seriously informative, one of the best interviews that makes me want to come back to this channel,he had my attention though out the vid. We need people who can link eastern esoterism coherently and people rarely do it as well as John Maki.
