My mother was born in Whangarei. Good to see Hubnut visiting NZ, as I now live in Australia and can recognize some of the sights from when I lived there until 1999. Plus I am a car nut and to be honest, I don't recognise most of the oddball JDM cars you are showing here. NZ has imported a wide variety of used cars from Japan since I left, which doesn't happen in Australia so much, although it is increasing since the government here allowed the local car industry to be shut down, and I believe the import rules have also been relaxed to compensate, just as happened in NZ when I was there.

The car parks are fascinating to you, but the clocks are more fascinating to me. We have one which is identical to one of those antique clocks. It's French, and that style dates from about 1920 to 1925. I could spend all day in there, and still go back the next day! That Polyphone needed some TLC though, or maybe only the disk was worn out. Many of the notes on it were not playing. Looked like a fine repertoire of music with it though! Thanks for that pinnacle amongst the many highlights of New Zealand. Wish we could visit; it has been a 50-year desire for me, but is unlikely to happen now. Thanks again, Ian.

That Toyota suv/people carrier you spotted in the car park looks virtually identical to the Toyota Qualis i have seen in India. Glad you are enjoying the trip as it was quite the journey. As regards moving metal I was rather taken with the Toyota WiLL, Wikipedia tells me that it was only made between 2000 and 2001 due to poor sales. What a shame something different failed to sell I'd have been tempted. Keep your eyes peeled for the Kakapo while you are there, the alas rare flightless parrot.

Another great video. I missed the peninsula when I toured North Island in 1981. Looks like I missed something really nice, but as you said, we forget how big NZ is. You can't see everything. Please don't worry about not spending too much time in car parks, though. The stuff there is so unusual, I'd love a few carpark only episodes! :^) Looks like you could do with a field guide to all the far eastern vehicular oddness you are coming across, but you seem to recognise many of them, presumably from your journalistic work. All very different from when I went, though - lots of old British stuff everywhere then, as that scrapheap you visited south of Auckland testified. Wonder if there are any more scrappies filled with rusting Britcars? Or even car museums?

I remember visiting the clock collection in 1959 and our family was shown around by Mr Clapham himself at his home in Tikipunga. His commentary was fascinating! When he died there was uncertainty as to whether the collection would be auctioned off or retained by the city. The city obviously acquired it and moved it to a central location with good access and display facilities.

Hehe, at 9:31 the german Blackforest Cuckoo clocks :-) Pieces of mechanical art sometimes. I always wondered if they had been produced anywhwere else in the world since they are so much loved souvenirs from Germany for 150 years although I never understood why.... My grandparents had one and one day my grandpa removed the cuckoo for permanent nerving reasons risking some serious discussions with my grandma :-) Otherwise this museum is my place to be, I´m a clock lover. Automatic wrist watches and the big clocks for use in the house. Cheers from Germany and good times in NZ, Bernd

NZ is just such a beautiful country, been there twice. Been in the city of Whangarei itself and from there to the Bay of Islands (Paihia), Whangaroa, into Northland to the 90 mile beach, giant sand dunes and to cape Reinga. But I've been to many other placed, on the North and South Island. On the second trip we had rented one of these bus campers, it was a Toyota Coaster bus, very similar to the Nissan Civilian in your video, I think it was from a company called Mighway which mediates for private people having their camper for rent. You can drive it with a normal car license if you keep it's laden weight below 4,5 tons.
