Ep57: Autumn's gifts: pumpkins, beans & sweet chestnuts

Gardening with a dog on my UK allotment plot and in the home garden - weekly diary/vlog of our exploits beginning Jan 2023 🌽🍓🥦
It's all about the Autumn vibes this week as we harvest the pumpkins (winter squash) and tally them up. I also get in the beans for drying before storm Babet hits and then, post storm, I dig up potatoes from a very, very wet plot. We end this week with a wander around Sherwood Forest looking for sweet chestnuts and mushrooms. The wait for the cafe au lait dahlia continues...

- I'm not a vet (!) so please don't just take my word for it regarding feeding your dog pumpkin!
- This is also not a foraging 'how to' so please consult reliable sources if you want to forage sweet chestnuts (not to be mistaken with horse chestnuts, which are not edible). Note: I do not forage mushrooms, I just like to spot them and try to ID them!

Cherokee trail of tears are a fabulous 🫘 bean both as pods and the bean themselves. Our rain has left but that means sunshine and super cold 1 or 2c nights. Oh I love the green twist . 😂😂 I always laugh when Dory barks at your because she says excuse me I’m the more important one 8:50 she’s adorable. There are lots of “unripe” butternut recipes so not to worry. 😂😂😂 oh yes please standardize the names of things. Turks turban sure are the coolest looking squash. 21:34 dog off the plot 😅. Lottie on the Plottie n entirely new channel. Oh bless you Ali - it's early in the morning here and I've just woken up (so that could have something to do with it ) but your comment made me well up! Thank you for being such a stalwart supporter of the channel - it is so appreciated. Raining here this morning and I'm just watching your rain - goodness! And yet there you are, out in it, making structural changes! I really need to get a grip on the more structural aspects of the allotment - I'm hoping Mark can help me! Lottie on the plottie would have been an excellent channel name! Haha. Good to know about the butternuts - I saw you say you might not bother next year - I don't think I've actually bought butternut seed for next year, so I might be joining you... And the cherokee trail of tears - I'll have to see if there is any seed left because nothing came of them this year, and now I'm annoyed! 🤣 Stay warm and thank you again. 😊💕

Amazing harvest of squashes and the Ying Yang are gorgeous, I grew gigantes for the first time this year but are saving the seeds for replanting next year. Jo Devon 🙂

Thank you Emma - they seem to be doing well on the window sill so far - just a couple that looked like they needed eating quickly! (So I did!) I'll let you know how the Fungo one tastes - but honestly I think I'd grow it just for the way it looks! Aw bless you - really appreciate that. That episode took a lot of editing because of all the overlaying of video, but it makes it all worth it when I get such lovely comments - thank you. 💕

I know - there was a proper little surge last week. I dreamt I hit 1K last night and when I woke up I was like 'woohoo' and then, oh hang on, it was a dream... 🤣

Mashed potatoes are the absolutely best thing to feed a dog that’s eaten something they shouldn’t. Nice and evenly bulks open the intestine and sweeps along the digestive tract picking up things that shouldn’t be there. My dog isn’t a fan of pumpkin at all. He probably would prefer me to throw a little one for him to fetch than eat any. 😀 Fingers crossed for 1000 subs very soon. 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

Oh that's good to know - Dorie is terrible for eating things in the park but they do tend to be edible things - that fish hook saga was only because she was gobbling up the white bread like a thing possessed! Sometimes I use the windfall apples on the park as balls for Dorie to chase 🤣 Thank you for watching and your comment 😊💕 p.s. subscribed!

KZfaq is definitely a strange entity and as it doesn't appear that I have much control over how it works I'm just doing what I like and what i think the lovely ppl who comment will like! It probably helps that I've been teaching for 15 years so am able to chatter away in a fairly knowledgeable way about anything for long periods 🤣🤣 - how do you feel about the whole youtube thing? Thank you Wendy - I know soooo close now! I was kinda stuck for a long time and then this month I've had a nice little surge - strange how all of this works (I've certainly no idea!). Last night I dreamt I reached 1k and woke up thinking woohoo, only to then remember it was just a dream 🤣 Glad you find the vlogs fun to watch and creating such a nice space here below the line 😊💕

Honeyboat is variety of delicata, so you haven’t been totally swindled! I find they’re a little sweeter than a regular delicata, though both are completely lovely. My favorite squash to grow and eat ❤ I planted mine too early this year though and they were ready too early. Next year, I guess!

Ah, ok - that makes sense! Perhaps if I'd labelled properly (!!) I could have seen a subtle difference, but that ship has most definitely sailed 🤣 - Oh that's a shame - I guess I'm the opposite problem because certainly the butternut squashes could have done with a bit more growth.

Enjoy! Yep, he's a bit of a show stealer this week. No baking here - but did take a bit of time off work to sort the dried beans - some for the freezer to kill any nasties, and some to keep for next year's planting.

@@dogontheplot yeah I did the same with our beans, all in the freezer 😊 was thinking of making homemade baked beans? 🤔 Must get a book on foraging, never quite know what is good to pick. Sourdough 20mins left 😋 I saw some of yours on instagram, 🤩 loved the Halloween face. Night before Christmas came to mind, think that’s the face 😍

Yes, that's what I was going for 🤣 - might have another go this year... the @ukwildcrafts channel on here is really good for foraging instruction. I did a course a couple of years ago but still very much a beginner!

Paddy fields lol and thanks for the shout out i feel spesh lol do u feed dorie raw or cooked pumpkin? i think Yang needs some lol and yin yang beans always disappoint me i dont get any back out.. oh and do you lift your chocky cosmos? to dry out n store over winter this was my first year growing them but have mine ina huge cauldron, ive lifted my glads cos i didnt know they got quiet so huge and im drying those out to plant out near a wall next year lol

Ah Bev - as a longtime viewer and frequent comment-er a shout out is the least I can do! Cooked pumpkin - mashed up with her regular food. I hear you on the yin yang beans but they look soooo cool! 🤣 It's my first year with the chocolate cosmos so... good question!!! I need to make a decision don't I... I'll be sure to let you know what I decide. I could do with moving some of my gladioli actually, but I'm not sure I'll get round to it... Feeling a bit overwhelmed right now! My strategy right now is to let everything die back and then sort it out! 🤣 Have a great week - take care.

@@dogontheplot well change that status to number one fan and thats me lol oh right next time i cook one ill share lol i tried to make a pumpkin spiced latte but didnt like it much lol as for choc cosmos i need to look too but most corm n stuff can either be mulched n left to chance or dug up n stored or at least in pots put in a dry place i think , but ye my gardening mojo is a bit lacking due to cold wet weather ive only just about started some broadbeans and garlic in the poly, i need to try n fill out some beds with something maybe green manure or field beans ill get ordering some seeds lol hope you have a great week too 👻 and happy halloween

I hear you - I have spring bulbs, garlic, & green manure all ready to go - and no mojo/time to do it. If the weather improves and the plot dries out a bit I will crack on... Happy halloween to you too!

@@dogontheplot i have planted some spring flower bulbs in pots so thats something to look forward to but yes its not as nice out at the mo and the impending doom of clocks changing messing with circadian rhythm and frosts makes me want to hibernate lol and yes your plot getting flooded its not a nice thing to cope with, there has to be a drainage solution somehow to filter off the water maybe a reverse of an irrigation system a bit like jims only more effective ,but then i guess that costs and would be hard work to pay any kind of piping, and i guess making a permanent concrete drain structure would be even harder ,its a tough one to know what to do with ha?
