In this episode we continue in the workshop repairing the brakes on our latest restoration project. RT2629 is London double decker bus built in 1951. Looks like we have our work cut out repairing this 70 year old London Bus!

Your attention to detail in restoring this old bus is great. I couldn’t get over the size of that brake cylinder. 😳 Also, you are quite right dirt and grease will start to cover everything as soon as it goes back on the road. The difference is, it’s now protected for many years to come. Probably better than when new. Really enjoy watching these restoration videos.

You are doing a fantastic job, your skills are comprehensive and your patience will no doubt be rewarded. When you use the honing tool the internal diameter of the brake cylinder must be reduced by a fraction. Does this mean that the new seal has to be slightly larger than the old one? Absolutely love these videos and the spray job you did on the rear of the chassis was brilliant! Long live the RT, the best bus ever built. By the way, what's the music played in the intro?

Recently found your channel and love the content. Seeing these old busses being restored, maintained and their issues fixed is so satisfying to see. The attention to detail, and the knowledge you all have about the parts, and authenticity is remarkable. Cant wait to see more work being done on RT2629.

What a lovely old Bus, RTs were my favourites, I remember when I was a Tacker catching the 118 from Clapham Common old Town to Streatham Vale /Norbury where I lived - cost was an old Sixpence. The Work you’ve done on the Chassis looks wonderful seems a shame to take her outside and get her all dirty again.

100% agree, used to do my utmost to get an RT on our only RM road if possible, ran out of possible fictitious faults in the end.

I think because it shows up well and any damage is easier to detect.

The breaks may be good but the rest sound pretty rough. Sounds like road resurfacer grind a road . Is it supposed to sound like that?

It would have been a gardener built with rolls royce spec. Lovely engine .the police launches used the same engine on the thames I can remember seeing the rts as Kids at the bottom of blackheath Hill at the bus stop with rad steaming after a run from central London run on an hot summers day The driver was unconcerned about it and Off it went up the hill fool up and ppl standing .the good old days When everybody wad good to each other and no bullshit. Then again all the busses were red a common site a bit like the ppl You vouldnt yell one from the other. Yes definitely the good old Days.

@@jimmywilson4322 All AEC RTs had AEC Engines. Gardiner engines in buses were not that common - Some Daimlers had them - a G in the Chassis number would indicate this, and became more common in the Rear Engine era of Atlanteans and Fleetlines, basically the Daimler Engine wasnt really good enough (and expensive to develop). Routemasters shared Leyland and AEC Engines.

Another interesting video, thanks for sharing! By the way, why is the front of the workshop flooded in light but the back area which you need to be lit up so you can carry work out pitch dark?!

Unfortunately, the bus is in a dark part of the unit, we have tried using camera lights but they wash out the footage too much.

Will this RT get 190 blinds? I hope so, since the 190 was operated by RTs for far longer than RMs ran it.

Another great video lads, that engine sounds very sweet. AEC or Leyland? Would you ever put a clear lacquer on top of the silver paint, to help keep the weather out?

What's the advantage of the Rear Axle design (with the Diff sitting on top) is it so you can get the bus to sit as lower as possible?? 🤔🤔

Yes: overall height of a standard double deck bus is 14' 6", though these days, this is often exceeded. Ground clearance is often also important. In the old days, and even now, railway bridges were built to give a road clearance of at least 14' 6" wherever possible. If lower, this would preclude double decker buses being used on routes passing under them. The very old railways did not observe this convention, so you do get low bridges under which high vehicles cannot pass. These are a road hazard, and you get a bus or truck being de-roofed or stuck under a bridge regularly, probably about one per week.

@@allenwilliams1306 Hence the development of low height double deck buses 13'6" in height (actually 13'4"). Mainly used on rural routes. Actual standard height of an RT was 14'4.5"" unladen. marked in cab as 14'6" Bristol Bus built the LH and LT had the Weyman bodied RT. Unmarked bridges should be over 5m in minimum clearance.

@@allenwilliams1306 We had a low bridge near where I lived as a child, 10' 6" but it was also narrow, space for two cars or a car and a van to pass and the clearance was off to one side, many a time one would find an RF or lorry coming at you on the wrong side until the council installed traffic lights. Many gouge lines on it.

Please explain why the hub and drive shaft were not rotating while the prop to the differential was. Is the dif in fact a transaxle?
