Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (born 3.27.1886)
Referred to commonly as “Mies”, the German-American architect is termed one of the pioneers of modern architecture along with Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. Mies was known for his minimalist and “less is more” approach to architecture and his forward thinking of using plate glass and structural steel to divide interior spaces is one of his most notable characteristics in architecture. His innovative open floor plan concepts were first thought of by Van der Rohe and many of his interior concepts & furniture styles are widely used in today’s architecture and interiors.
His most notable projects include Barcelona Pavilion, in Barcelona, Spain, New National Gallery in Berlin, Germany, Seagram Building in New York City and Crown Hall in Chicago, Illinois.
The Barcelona Pavilion, an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects. It was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition.
Built from glass, steel and different kinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alfonso XIII of Spain along with the German authorities.
In this video, architectural designer and professor Stewart Hicks breaks down what makes the Open Plans of Mies van der Rohe a unique form of ‘open concept’ in Modern Architecture. The spatial strategies of Mies van der Rohe are explained, beginning with his early unbuilt Brick House, through the Barcelona Pavilion, to the Farnsworth House. Each one features a particular, but evolving, use of walls, columns, and roof planes that add up to what we call ‘Open Plans.’ Other videos in the series around 'Open Concepts" are dedicated to things like Free or Organic Plans and can help anyone sharpen their understanding of architectural concepts. In addition to the close reading of the plans, the glass wall is compared to the ribbon windows of Corbusier and the corner windows of Frank Lloyd Wright.
