Ep8 Boarding Ladder and Etched glass

My new custom made boarding arrives and I work on replacing an etched glass window. The glass window was not a standard part of the Hardin 45 and was a custom piece of artwork. I used photoshop, a line drawing, and some creativity from the glass artist to come up with a new design based on the remains of the old one.
The new ladder will provide a great way to get onto the boat, whether climbing out of the dinghy or if I've gone for a swim.
A future episode will give a glimpse of my life here in San Diego and that it's not all boat work... well almost not all.

It's all coming together nicely. New engine will give you years of trouble free operation - that was a wise decision. Love these videos!

@@OnnoKok By the way, love your choice of motorcycle. That color scheme was known in Australia as the 'taxi' model. I had the blue and silver color scheme. Best bike I ever owned. Like riding a turbine engine.

Some really nice upgrades for which you didn't skimp on spending. I know that boarding ladder cost a pretty penny at least! Congrats!

Wow, both the ladder and etched glass are beautiful. Hope to see them in real sometime when the borders reopen. In the meantime please keep up these great videos!

Nice looking boat. The boarding ladder looks great especially after you varnished it. We are looking for a boarding ladder like that. Where did you purchase it from?

Thanks for watching! The place where I got it from is called Cruising Concepts. They make custom cockpit tables and such.

... we do not see too many "boat heaters" here on the mid-atlantic ... New England, yes ... but not here. Could you do a video on that heater in the background ... I am about to retire when I finish w/ some issues w/ my parents estate ... and I am thinking about a 38'-50' Ketch ... Thanks

@@OnnoKok Still gathering info on CC Ketches ... I like a Gulfstar, or a Bristol ... still learning about others as there seems to be many choices ... something from the 70's => 80's ... heavier and better wooden interiors (which I like as it "feels" warmer) and they are starting to get to were I can offered one ...

... that is a really really nice boarding ladder ... but ... if your are alone ... and fall overboard ... How are you going to use the boarding ladder ??? The latches are to far up ... out of reach ...for someone swimming to deploy/unfold the ladder and get out of the water ... small detail, but it could be a lifesaving detail ... please post what your solution is ... Oh, your trip down the East Coast was a lesson on how to do it correctly ... you picked the best ( the only inlets for underpowered sailboats) inlets in NJ/MD ... in-board of Hatterass ... out Beaufort (NOT in Beaufort w/ it's very strong out going tides !!!! ... then the last jumps ... all w/ no auto-pilot !!! Great decision making !!!

... I do have several ideas on how to modify the boarding ladder w/ a lil' of hardware and line ( and elbow grease ) ... most people do not know how hard it is to lift one's self out of the water ... add wet cloths and hypo-therma ... and you are in trouble quickly ...

@@OnnoKok ... you need to be able to "deploy"/unfold it ... when you are swimming (especially in COLD water). The Hook Latches are up to far and out of reach. I would use a "small line tied to the bottom rung ... up and over the top rung and run down "inside" to the bottom of the ladder were it is tied off. Undo the line and the bottom section should unfold/deploy downwards. (... have you tried to climb up a "rope" ladder ??? I have ... they can be very difficult to climb because the bottom always swings away, unless you have. something to push against ). I like what you are doing and the order you are doing it ... I would sail w/ you anytime ... and I do pick my "skippers" carefully ...

@@OnnoKok I'll have to look closer and see which way the "pin" slides ... towards the "hull side" ??? If so you could do something along those lines (HaHa) ... turn the line around a small flush mt harkin block ... hanging down ... pull on the line ... pull pin back ... ladder unfolds ... and you can climb the ladder and get out of the water ... YAaaa ...

... I have a Scotch/Irish/German head ... but I would still be swimming to the side ... HaHa So the pin movement is vertical ... not horizontal ??? Still that can be "worked" w/ ... and adapted.

Hi! Yes, it was a custom ladder, though I don’t recall the name of the outfit. Possibly Cruising Concepts, but it was ordered and took about 6 weeks.

how did you attached it on the hull? would like to see how you did that?

Good day and thanks for watching. The ladder is attached to the hull via steel bars that hook onto the genoa track. So I can use it on either side of the boat in multiple locations. I have a security line attached as well as sometimes the dinghy can come up underneath and pop it off the track. Cheers!

... so ... a "clevis pin" w/ a ring ... small line tied to it ... (2) harkin "cheek" blocks mounted up higher to pull the pin up on each side ... I would run the line then down to the bottom of the"hull side" and through a small hole drilled through the wood ... "figure (8) knot" ... and there you have it ... simple and clean ... and you can deploy the ladder while swimming ... Cost: under $20 ... maybe $10 ... (I would search the "discount " hardware bins at the marine store ...

@@OnnoKok ... this the type of "stuff" ... I just like "EN-GA-NEERING ... (I do have a mech engineering degree) ... Please post pics when installed ... I would allow the "line" to loop down slightly so it is easy to grab ... then through the hole ... Safe Sailing ... ( you can "buy" me a beer at some later date ...) FYI, I am on the East Coast/Chesapeake Bay (Eastern Shore) Oh ... watch your head !!! ... I want to see how you lift the old engine/diesel up and out of the boat ...
