This video was made in 2014 with footage recorded from Wii Virtual Console, and the production was limited compared to what I can do today. Additionally, I was considerably less experienced with scriptwriting and editing than I am now. If I were to remake this video today, it would be much higher in footage quality and I probably would've ironed some things out. I'm not too fond of it myself, but a lot of people disagreed and asked me to keep it public, so here we are. If I can get the capacitors in my Triple Bypass Genesis replaced, I might redo this video. Also, Sonic 3 Angle Island Remastered is a thing now.

There are 2 kinds of classic fans. The first is the "all modern era/ 3D Sonic games suck" fans.The 2nd is were I put myself are fans who prefer the classics but still enjoy the newer Sonic games.

I love Sonic Mania. It does a great job recapturing the original spirit of the older games. But Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the GOAT of Sonic games.

Holy moly. Everything from 23:30 and onward I couldn't agree more with. Even as a kid, the Classic Sonic games never stood out as these grand, perfect games everyone praised them as. Aside from Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic '06, and other games like that, I never thought Sonic took as much as a downfall of quality compared to the classics as everyone said he did, but I never knew why I thought that, because no one else really _explained_ why the classics were as good as they said. It was only until I recently beat Sonic 2 in its entirety that I was able to form my own opinions about it, and realize for myself what I think the Sonic series really is, because certainly no one else was going to help me in that. And the main opinion everyone has about Sonic is what casual players and non-Sonic fans come to see Sonic as too, and that's kind of a shame.

Wow Exo.. this is by FAR my Favorite Classic Sonic Review from you! :) And it's not because we both love Sonic 3 & Knuckles.. I can go on any review video and hear them worship this game, or any other classic sonic game for that matter. This is my fav video from you because you Thoroughly state why the Classic Sonic games aren't perfect, and why Classicists (or how I like to call them classicfags or nostalgiafags, excuse my French) are super biased towards these games vs. 3d sonic games. Sonic Colors and Generations are one of my favorite Sonic games, but S3&K is still #1.. and that's not because I'm a classicist, it's because there's still some things that were done in S3&K that Sega has yet to fully implement again, like the other characters and how they play, without going to far like the Adventure games did and changing the gameplay styles. Also, I personally enjoyed 2D Sonic in the classic games than Classic Sonic in Generations. The Old 2d Sonic had a higher jump.. and that was one of the things that kinda annoyed me with Classic Sonic in Generations.. several platforming sections became more difficult than they should've because they gimped Classic Sonic's jump, idk why. I didn't know how important it was for Sonic to jump high until I played Sonic Generations, and it's why I actually prefer Modern Sonic's levels way more than Classic Sonic's (which is a good thing right? That means Sega finally got 3D Sonic down lol). Funnily enough, using the homing attack for Classic Sonic makes platforming a lot better and reaching higher places more easier. Also, there are some levels in Generations that I think are even better than the originals! Sky Sancutary in Gen. is better than S3&K, and more fully realized. Also the Metal Sonic boss is way better than the one in Sonic CD

Great review as always, EPG. Is there some place you can get Sonic 3 now? Like somewhere on VC because I really want to play this now. About the nostalgic bias, I think it exists in every fanbase. Take Mario for example. There are people who claim 64 is the best out of the bunch just because it did something new. There's a lot of that bias.

This is an awesome review, but you made a mistake. Tails does jump as high as Sonic, it's Knuckles who has a lower jump. I've played Sonic games almost religiously, especially Sonic 3&K which is my favorite. However, you are not alone on this Sonic Fanbase issue. Granted, I used to be one of these biased fans, but I've matured since then and do believe there are a lot of good Sonic games. I'm in the same boat with you and agree with a lot of your opinions even before I saw this review.

Classic Sonic is good. Modern Sonic is good. I grew up in the Classic Era and I agree that to say that there haven't been any good sonic games since & Knuckles is complete bull. I have enjoyed most of the sonic games I've played since then. And while some of them are indeed terrible (2006), a good bit of them are awesome in their own right (Colors and ESPECIALLY Generations)

Am I the only one who kind of liked Sonic 3D Blast. I mean, I know it's flawed, but I had some fun with it.

They sure pushed everyting to the limits.It is incredible how much detail is only on angel iland level:the beguinig scene where you can see the beach in the background for just a second.the fire effects.the incredible paralax scrolling that changes with your hight.the intimidating introduction of robotnic,everyting is perfect,and with the greatest 16 track:hydrocity act 2

Honestly, I think Mario has a lot to do with the 3D Sonics not getting love. Sonic had it's original run with no true competition on Genesis, except Super Mario World. But Mario transitioned beautifully to 3D, over and over again. While Sonic Adventure was a good game, it was no Mario 64. Mario basically set the bar, and Sonic has just come up short time and time again. Not bashing Sonic, I grew up loving the 2D Sonics. Still do. Adventure was fun too. But for me, it's easy to see why most Classic Sonic fans don't like the 3D games. They were good, they weren't great.

Sonic 3 & K is still probably my favorite sonic game. One aspect I think you didn't touch on is historical context. Yes, there are a lot of elements of the classic series that haven't aged well when you scrutinize them with modern game standards. However, if you compare them to their contemporaries (as you started to get into with your discussion on the save functionality) you can see why fans who played these games when they were originally released were more willing to overlook the flaws that these games had. Sonic 1 wasn't a perfect game, but it presented us with a sense of speed we'd never seen in a platformer before. Sonic 2 may have been really difficult, but it still seemed like an improvement over the original game in many ways (particularly the spin dash). Sonic 3 was a huge game that once again dramatically improved over it's predecessor. The continual exceeding of expectations is part of the reason why fans who played the series at release remember it so fondly.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the first classic Sonic Game I ever truly finished, with all the characters. BEST CLASSIC SONIC GAME EVER! Also, I'm glad you based the classic Sonic bias. I subbed to you just because you did that. Stay awesome, man!

As a Sonic fan, there's nothing I hate more than Sonic fans. It's a very toxic and divisive community a lot of the time, but I feel it's for good reason, and reasons Sega should have sorted out. I'm going to admit my complete bias, I grew up with the Genesis stuff and loved it, but I agree with every frustration you've had with the games of old. I still remember how angry a lot of those bonus stages made me, and it wasn't until SK3 I felt they really nailed it...and to me, that's why I've had a problem with the franchise since then. They've perfected it once. Nobody really talks about what it was like being a fan and our expectations of what was to come right after that game. It wasn't the same market it is today, or even in Dreamcast days. Nobody talks about Saturn. Nobody talks about the wait and disappointment we had to get through before we finally got Adventure. Which was new and exciting, but when you compare 1 and 2 to SK3? Not even close. Then we got Heroes. Then Shadow. Then 06. They really made it hard to stay a fan at that point, and it became even harder for them to win us back after years of this nonsense, especially when you look at what Mario was doing with amazing 3D games alongside the still great 2D stuff they've always done. We're less forgiving on the modern stuff when comparing to classic because they should really have their shit together by now. Unleashed had really good ideas. Colors even more after that, and in my personal opinion, Generations even more....and then they redesigned everything and game us Lost World.There's a lot of good stuff in those games, but like you were saying in the 2 and CD videos, there is a LOT of frustrating nonsense in them as well, and they've had 20 years to sort that out. Considering how huge of an icon Sonic is in game culture, it's just a little insulting to the fanbase of old that they can't take care of this property. We've grown up with this series, we've seen how good it can be, and we just feel like it deserves better. Again though, I do love the Adventure games, modern stuff, hell even the weird trash on Saturn, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles will always be the pinnacle of this series. I just wish they'd strive for that quality, instead of jumping to a new engine every couple years.

What's funny is that when I played as knuckles when I was younger, I used to think I had to get the red spheres to match knuckles colour, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong when the stage started spinning as soon as I touched a sphere.

The Bayonetta intro for the Death Egg robot had me DYING. Really great series btw, I think you've changed the way I look at all video games, including Sonic.

It's always good to look at games this way because then we can truly appreciate how great they are. It shows that a lot of retro games weren't just good for their time rather they are just good games as a whole that are timeless and can be ranked along side modern games. Furthermore, when we find the flaws in these great games we can make better games or new types of games that improve upon what was already done. This is important to me because I just like playing games (whether retro or modern, I treat them as the same). When a game is good or amazes me it has nothing to do with its age. I wouldn't want to look at retro and modern as different tiers when it comes to the quality of the game itself. The tiers (generations) should be left for the changes in the possibilities and potential of games, and the general history of gaming as a whole.

The final boss actually has rings, if you had some in act 2 of Death Egg Zone.

This was a superb review, better than any other review you have done. I also really enjoyed the ending, I'm also sick of ClassicGameRoom and Screwattack's egoraptorian bias and I'm glad that your able to challenge their unfairness to show the other side of the coin.

Kind of disappointed you didn't bring up the special stages that reward you with extra rings and powerups.

Nobody has probably ever paid attention to the color palletes in the special stages, but I'm gonna state, that in the standalone sonic 3, that flying battery was gonna be after carnival night, which you would find in that exact order in the soundtest. Special Stage 5 has some orange and dark purple(?) tiles, which is the somewhat same color scheme in flying battery.

I'm intrigued by the fact you didn't mention that Knuckles has a unique story taking place after Sonic's. Of course, most people miss that since they removed the opening cutscene from the game, so I can't blame you.

23:30 Everything Exo said is 100% true. And this is coming from somebody who grew up with the classic games as a child in the 90's. I don't know where I fall in the Sonic-fan-spectrum here. I honestly can't call myself a Classicist, because some of my favorite games in the series are from all the other eras. I'll never understand the mentality of being unwilling to give something a fair chance. They'll play a modern Sonic game once, claim to have given it a fair chance, but when somebody says they dislike a classic Sonic game, these classicists will insist that the game be given multiple consecutive chances. It almost seems like an abusive relationship. "Classic Sonic only gives me Game Overs because it loves me." I'm not gonna pretend Sonic 3 & Knuckles isn't one of my top five favorite Sonic games. But I'm also not gonna pretend that it doesn't have any flaws. Often times, I'll entertain the notion of replaying it for the fiftieth time, but then stop to think to myself that I'd have to replay some of the worst parts of the game that I hate, like the collapsing ruins in Marble Garden Zone Act 2, the lower underwater sections of Hydrocity Zone Act 1, Getting lost in Carnival Night Zone Act 2 and timing out, trying to perfectly time my jumps to hit the boss of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 without getting hit, racing against the clock with the timed gates and ghosts in Sandopolis Zone Act 2, that stupid upside-down conveyor-elevator-platform in Death Egg Zone Act 2 towards the end. I'll think about those areas and decide that I just don't have it in me to replay the game. Sometimes, I'd rather play as Amy Rose or Big the Cat in Sonic Adventure 1, in all honesty. I'd rather play as Tails and Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2. A lot of the time, I'd rather pop in Sonic R and race around the same five tracks ten times. Most of the time, I'd rather return to Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces. I know there's no accounting for taste, so I have no excuse for any of my personal preference, but if you pretend that classic Sonic games are flawless, then I submit that you are just a masochist who doesn't want your games to be even the slightest bit fair to you. Every time I try to make the exact same argument Exo has here, and explain point-for-point why Classic Sonic games aren't inherently better than Modern Sonic games, folks just interrupt me, talk over me, shout at me, call me stupid, what-have-you. It's impossible to have a civilized conversation with a Classic Sonic fan. It's like talking to a Republican. And it makes me ashamed to even BE a Sonic fan to begin with. I love Sonic. But I absolutely hate so much of the Sonic fan community that it makes me sick. I often refuse to let people know I like Sonic games entirely for fear of awakening some eldritch drama-llama. I thought I was all alone in my thinking, the one person on Earth who felt the way about Sonic that I do. But then I watched this video. And it's absolutely criminal that Exo doesn't have more viewership than this.

Uh, wait, hold up. There's just one problem with how you turn Super in this game, and this was an issue since Sonic 2. In Sonic 2, when you have all 7 Chaos Emeralds and get 50 rings, you're FORCED to turn Super automatically the moment you jump! In OG Sonic 3 and Knuckles, they tried solving it by having you press jump twice, but then another issue occurs; you can't use your Insta-Shield! And if you have an Elemental Shield, you can't turn Super until you lose it! Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic Mania fixed this problem by giving the Super form its own button.

I'm a classicist, and I even liked Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for all their faults (Dreamcast Lover forever). Hell Colours, Generations, and World hands down is what Sonic Classic is with the modern touch.

Finally someone with some common sense. Thank you. I know Sonic games get a lot of flack for not being as good as some, but personally, I find them enjoyable in their own ways. Well, except for the Wii ones, to be brutally honest. Sacrificing gameplay for speed wasn't a good time, like, at all, even though the actual concept was kind of cool. It just sucks when I'm trying to play Unleashed, and I've got my S/O over here poking holes in every little detail, like how it ripped off God of War for the Werehog sections, or how underacted Tails is, and it's like, you're playing Destiny and you're tearing holes in my game. Good grief. Thankfully, we had fun tearing apart each other's games last night, as a result of that... =)

Absolutely awesome review. As an overall sonic and video game lover you have inspired me to buy sonic 3 from Amazon for the Genesis. I have the sonic and knuckles cartridge that I purchased years ago from funcoland (ya when that was a thing). Along with the Genesis and about 15 other games which included phantasy star 4, and other hidden gems for only $25. I'm going to have a blast plugging that thing back in and replaying some awesome games. Thanks for the review!

You made a mistake about the characters. Sonic and Tail control absolutely the same bar the special ability. Knuckles is the one who is slightly slower and doesn't jump as high which is quite noticeable in some parts.

Tails jump is the same height as Sonic.... It would make much sense to lower the jump being as Tails could just fly as high as he'd need to jump anyway. Knuckles however has a lower jump.

Well, I kinda have a sorta suggestion for a ROR if a Stealth/Taxman Android/iOS remake doesn't come to fruition (Tho with Sega's recent priority shift to Mobile gaming, I actually think it's now far more of a possibility). You could always compare it to a ROM hack Stealth himself helped work on called "Sonic 3 Complete". It takes the game we all know and love, and adds SO many options! Want the game to have it's original intended Sonic 3 styled layout and music? You got it! Want great genesis remixes of the Sonic & Knuckles Collection for the PC version of the game instead of the original level tunes? It's there! Want the "Easy mode" introduced in the Sonic Jams collection? You go right ahead, I won't judge you. Want the original/prototype level placement and color scheme for Flying Battery Zone? It's there, and trust me it's quite interesting! Want the Sonic/Tails combo controls of the iOS/Android remake versions of Sonic 1/2? It's implemented! Want Sonic to control like he did in the Taxman version of Sonic CD, Super Peelout and all? I know I do, and I'm so glad it's there! I can go on and on with the little tweaks and great aesthetic/gameplay implementation Sonic 3 Complete adds to the game, but then the comment would go on for far too long. All I know is that it's THE definitive version of Sonic 3K to me, and I'm actually currently tracking down one of those specialty/custom SD card slotted Genesis cartridges so that I can play the game on my actual Genesis, it's THAT good. Oh, and one last thing to note, you can even play Sonic 3 Complete with the Sonic 1/2 Title Screen/Invincibility/Level Clear/Extra Life/Super Sonic jingles if you so choose! I LOOOOVE that option, myself.

These are the EXACT reviews of these games I've always wanted to see and I'm glad I finally get to see the flaws in these games actually talked about rather than just excused. I have fond memories of all the Classic Sonic Games (thanks to iOS and Sonic Mega Collection Plus). Here's how I order them; 1) Sonic 3 & Knuckles 2) Sonic 2 iOS 3) Sonic 1 iOS 4) Sonic CD iOS (I don't have as many good memories of Sonic CD as the others)

25:31 Nah man, you're not the only one, I grew up playing the classic Sonic games and even at a young age I knew they weren't perfect. And it's such a pain in the rear to defend the Dream Cast/Modern Sonic games from people who say "naw man sanic tree was the last gud gaem", more so with the Dream Cast games in my experience. Though I completely understand why many people consider Sonic 3K to the best of the Classic series, I still prefer the original. I think the length was just right, I enjoyed most of the levels (only exception being Labyrinth Zone), and Sonic's weight, control and speed really did it for me. But still, I really like Sonic 3K; it's my second favorite of the classic series. On a side note, I could never get into DKC2 or 3 for some reason, so your next marathon will defiantly be interesting to watch. Can't wait to see it!

I actually kind of enjoyed labyrinth zone in Sonic 1. Sure it was not very interesting. But It was not the worst stage I have played in a Sonic game not even one of the worst. Honestly.

It's great to go down memory lane, remember the sounds and images of waking up early on a Saturday morning to play video games or staying up late for a sleepover. But we also have to be honest as to how these games hold up today and good memories don't equal perfect games

When I started getting into the series in 2013, I got the "Sonic Classic Collection" for the DS, the second Sonic game I bought, and while I liked all the games, with "Sonic 3 and Knuckles" being my favorite of the bunch, they are FAR from perfect. I could save in all the games with the version I had, but if I had played the Genesis versions, I don't know how long I would last.

I kinda think Sonic 3D Blast gets a bad wrap. Sure the Genesis version is hard to control, but it's easier to control on the Mega Collection version.

Congrats for finishing your marathon :), very informative. I felt frustrated because I liked Sonic Generations but disliked Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic Advance and Sonic Adventure and I wasn't able to find anyone that can recommend me other sonic games because everyone kept telling me that the classic Sonic games are perfect. Now, I'm going to try Sonic 3 and Knuckles :). Have you ever played Jazz Jackrabbit or Planet Freedom, that games are heavily inspired in the Sonic series, but I found them better in every aspect.
