Neil and I went on a 30 hr tuna trip with Captain Matt and GPB. This video shows you what to expect from catching live pinfish for bait, boarding the boat, bottom fishing, tuna fishing, debarking and collecting your fish.
We caught pinfish and alternated for Vermillion and Scamp/AJ.
Later at Perdido we used both halcos and jigs to catch tuna. The trip ended up with
Trip totals....
27 YFT
236 BFT
252 Beeliners
12 Scamp
8 AJ
3 BlackJack
It was a pretty epic trip.
This is essentially a video version of www.360tuna.co...
This video focuses on jigging and halcos because that was the hot bite this trip vs. chunking like the last trip. Every trip is a new adventure...
If you want to book a trip on the New Buccaneer, keep your eyes peeled to their website because they booked all the fall trips in one day this year!

To make it easy for you to find the products that I use in my videos, I have become an Amazon affiliate so that I can add links to the products that I use. I do make a commission from each sale, but have hopefully created a one stop shop for you to find everything that you need! If Amazon does not carry the product or the price is crazy, I listed links where you can find them or just listed the names so you can grab them at your local tackle store.

Awesome that you took the time and effort to make this vid. I did the tuna trip twice last spring, both times on the cancellation list in case someone cancelled, it was very productive. Going for a Dec 18th trip in 7 weeks or so, hoping for calm seas, but not likely in December. I also did not have any great success with pinfish, although I did bring some. Guy next to me at the 30 mile 1st stop grabbed a piece of old dried chum fish out of rubbermaid barrel, hooked it, threw it out with 1 Lb. lead weight, hooked a massive grouper so big he could not hold it up straight for the photos. You absolutely have to get transderm patches to prevent seasickness - - - - and bring pep pills or buy lot's of hot coffee onboard and stay CHARGED, if you don't you will want to go to sleep and loose out because the real action is from about midnight till 6:00 am. You have to fish all night till daybreak to maximize the big money you spent to take this trip. I am addicted, this is my new rush . . . no wonder most all these trips get booked out WAY in advance.

The party boat I go on runs both 2-day and 3-day tuna trips in September and early October. They go way offshore, like 120+ miles. As such, a lot of them end up getting canceled, but when they do sail, the trips are always epic. One trip last year had a full boat limit of yellowfins, plus a couple bigeyes as a bonus. I'm saving up for one, as the 3-day long range trip is $625 per person.

Does each fisherman catch each species or are certain spots on the boat harder to catch fish? Does anyone sleep or just go all out for 30hours? Im thinking of bringing my 15yr old son??? Recommended or Not??? Thanks for making the video
@ThumpemupFishingchannel
@ThumpemupFishingchannel 5 ай бұрын
1. The captain and crew will tell you the target species and the best way to catch them. Normally it’s squid for red snapper, vermillion snapper and whatever else bites. It may be freelining for kingfish etc. I normally catch pinfish for grouper and drop that first then switch if that doesn’t work. Tuna fishing uses poppers, swimbaits, chunk or jigs. Ask the deckhands and they will tell you. Best time to sleep is when the boat is moving from spot to spot. I normally don’t get much sleep! Bring your son but make sure he has a patch or something to prevent sea sickness. That is the worst experience!

I have a few 4 piece poles that I took to Florida that I used off the piers. I was using 20-30lb braid & 20-30lb mono leader & I couldn't cast far. Other locals were using 10lb braid with a 20-30lb mono-leader & they were casting way out there.

@ThumpemupFishingchannel
@ThumpemupFishingchannel 2 жыл бұрын
I use two types of braid for my different combos. For jigging I use at least 300 yards of tuffline indicator braid in 65lb test. I use the indicator braid to know exactly how far to drop my jig. Sometimes tuna are at 150 and sometimes 400ft so the indicator braid helps! For jigging rods I will tie on a 15’ 80lb fluorocarbon leader. For popping I want casting distance. I use Seaguar Threadlock 50. It has an 80lb ABS. I tie on a short 8’ wind on leader that is long enough to not have to wrap around the spool of my reel when I cast. If I have to tie on a knot, I use a 4’ leader and a uni to uni to keep the knot outside of the eye of my rod! I’m heading out 5/12! Glad you like the video!

White hammered diamond jig and an OTI jaeger 400 gram jig in pink in case the current was ripping... @@robertneighbors4091 trust me I know. I am one of those guys. The boat rod will work for chunking and jigging but that is about it. For those that want to bring their own Tackle- I recommend three sets of gear. You can go high end with a Stella and a Custom rod or low end with a Spheros and an Ugly Stick based on your budget, preference and probability of divorce. I use my tackle for both bluefin and yellowfin so have much higher grade gear than required. 1. Popping rod 10-20K class high gear ratio spinning reel (spheros to stella) on a 7 - 8 ft popping rod. Spool with 50lb braid. Although a topshot is probably not necessary I tie on a wind on casting leader of 80lb flourocarbon. I tie on a snap swivel or solid swivel and split ring with a Jansik knot. I use a 18-20k Stella reel on Carpenter, Synit and Yamaga Blanks popping rod. A lower cost option is a Shakespeare Tiger Lite jigging stick with a Spheros or Saragosa reel. 2. Jigging rod- 8000- 10000 class spinning reel with a 5-6 foot rod spooled with 50-65lb indicator braid and 80lb windon leader. I tie on a snap swivel or solid swivel and split ring with a Jansik knot. I use a Daiwa Dogfight on a Synit jigging rod. A lower cost alternative is to use the same popping combo for jigging. 3. Chunking/conventional Jigging rod- Conventional reel with capacity to hold 300yards of 65-80lb braid on a 6ft rod. I use an Ocea Jigger 4000 on a Valley Hill jigging rod. I have also used an Aleutecnos 8v with with 50-65lb indicator braid and 80lb fluorocarbon wind on leader. I use a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Tiger lite heavy conventional rod.

@@ThumpemupFishingchannel I hear you. Unfortunately I was forced to sign on with Dolphin Docks La Pesca boat for December cause all the 30 to 36 hour trips booked at Buccaneer (~$400 trips), they hustled me by telling me twice that even though their website says NO BRAID, the lady said twice you can use braid but with a mono or floro leader, like 8 to 10 foot leader. THEN, I checked again weeks after I paid I full and another lady said NO WAY, you have to use at least 50 yds mono topshot. I would guess casting top water lures with 80 to 100 Lb. mono on a spinning reel ain't going to work, it starts to twist up and snarl on the spool for one, casting distance severely constrained. Another guy who has fished Dolphin Express ($1,000 trips) said they allow ALL braid on that boat if you wish - - - I guess you get what you pay for ? I saw you said: "Spool with 50lb braid. Although a topshot is probably not necessary I tie on a wind on casting leader of 80lb flourocarbon. - - - So is your "wind on" 80 Lb. floro leader going through the eyelets smoothly ? I will definitely be reporting my experience on tuna360 after I return.
@ThumpemupFishingchannel
@ThumpemupFishingchannel 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertneighbors4091 I use a windon leader vs any type of knot so when you do a loop to loop, it will absolutely pass through the eyes. I keep my windon short so that my loop to loop is above the spool with no mono spooled on the reel. If I do a uni to uni, I tie the knot just outside of my top eye with a short 3-4’ leader so that the knot never goes inside the eyes. My popping rods are 8’ + so I have plenty of leader to cast. I have never fished DD so can’t comment on that boat. Post on 360 as a bunch of people fish that boat though. I would try to talk to the captain to confirm.
