EPIC 80s DRUM SOUNDS (aka Gated Reverb)

In this video I discuss three different ways in which I go about getting 80s inspired drum sounds in my home studio:
1. Gated Ambience
2. Gated Reverb
3. The 80s "Studio" Sound
As always, I'm not trying to literally re-create exact sounds using exact processes - eg. the 80s recording process, signal chain, era appropriate clothing, etc ... just merely getting inspired by those sounds and finding my own way of doing it in a modern musical context and environment, AND hopefully inspire YOU to do the same!
00:00 Intro - Headbands & Aviators
03:32 Gated Ambience Drum Stuff
06:44 Gated Ambience DAW Stuff
09:29 Gated Ambience w/ no snare muffling
11:05 Gated Reverb Drum Stuff
14:27 Gated Reverb DAW Stuff
16:00 Outboard Gear & Signal Chain
18:34 The 80s "Studio" Sound Drum Stuff
21:21 Sick Jams
23:11 The 80s "Studio" Sound DAW Stuff
26:20 The 80s "Ballad" Snare Drum Stuff

It's funny cause you're right about how they would record drums first and then cymbals, but now you'll have other youtubers trying to figure how was someone able to play the beat with a hi hat, snare, and cymbal at same time. They'll literally say stuff like, "they used 3 sticks." 🤭

And Prince was on record saying that he was influenced by what The Cocteau twins had done with drum machines and was obsessed with the drum sounds they achieved (which were run through guitar amplifiers and recorded to beef them up and other techniques that drove stuffy engineers of the time mad).

Great stuff, Jake. I think people forget that the most important thing when recording drums is the actual drum and the raw sound. No amount of processing is gonna save a badly tuned kit, or inconsistent volume. Also, can you talk about avoiding getting your hihat sound into the snare mic, i always encourage drummers not to slam the hihat. You snare sounds damn clean.
@JakeReedmusic
@JakeReedmusic 3 жыл бұрын
You're right! I always try to stress this as much as I can. Get the drums sounding good for the song, then worry about the processing. RE: hihat ... I just try to play it softer and also position the mic so it rejects a lot of hihat.

This sounds so so good! Thanks for all the detail you’ve put in these setups! One random question: is your drum room carpeted? I feel like I don’t see a lot of people recording drums at home in carpeted rooms, and it’s one thing I’m battling trying to learn how to record drums at home. It’s awesome to see you getting a lot of different room sounds and ambience in your videos working with your room size/setup!
@JakeReedmusic

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! The room where the drums are has fabric along one wall, and there are a couple of bass traps but that’s it. The room with the gated ambience mic has virtually no sound treatment.
