You made a basic mistake in the set-up for your battle. The British would not have formed up in a line against a fast, mobile native force such as the Zulus. This opens them up to being enveloped by the Zulus, who would form up in a bull's horn (crescent) attack. Any gaps in between your wagons or where the artillery are emplaced, allows the Zulus to break the British line. The British forces would form a square, with artillery on the corners, firing canister. The soldiers would stand shoulder-to shoulder and fie volleys at the enemy. The cavalry would be protected in the centre of the square, and would be used to charge in the Zulus were routed.

This video was so awesome Pixelated Apollo. i've actually realized why i love your videos so much, it's because of the charming voice during the battle that innovates me and the outstanding camera angles you pick. i mean seriously when i think of an Anglo-Zulu battle it's exactly like this. waves of Zulu warriors jumping over British defenses slaughtering the foreign invaders while in the background thousands of other Zulu are slowly surrounding them. it both cool, majestic and amazing.

Actually Markus, there is only 1 battle where the Zulu won, and they won very definitively, but it was an ambush at night, with lots of fog, blinding the British... But the British at this point had semi automatic rifles, and they could easily take on Zulu armies 20 times larger.

the Zulus should not have even made it far in this battle in such a flat environment, Apollo failed to correctly place his infantry repel the enemy lines and his native fighters were horribly commanded, the Calvary was too static and thus is wasted

Because I am from Yorkshire, we forgo all sensible pronunciation and instead choose to get the word out as fast and with as little enunciation as possible. So Warwickshire becomes Warricksher. The "R" is just there to turn the "E" into an "Urgh" and not actually used.

@@MrSimonw58 Indeed cannons were their major weakness because the Zulu didn’t have that many guns which they acquired from previous battles and they weren’t trained in gun use. They used sheer strength and numbers in order to defeat any army. The Zulus barely reached the British’s encampment by just charging at it and getting shot down by either musket fire or cannon. Also a major flaw was that the Zulu had their troops positioned in large numbers at single point instead of putting them at various different points, in which the British could use to their advantage and overcome them separately.

@@rapidxen2734 thats why one of, if not the toughest, colonial fight in africa was somalia. The british, italians, and ethiopians all cooperated yet it took over 2 decades of war. Thats because the somalis had wide access to guns and cannons, though they were inferior. Thats why somalia was the first area in africa to be arial bombed by a western army. They had to use gas and all the tricks they learned in ww1 against the somalis because they were somewhat modernized.

You have to admire the sheer bravery of the Zulu warriors In the battle of isandluwna despite the poor position they found themselves in the British were still confident of victory. No one actually expected the Zulus reach the British line the modern Martini-Henry breechloading rifle accurate at 400 yards and two 7-pounder mounted guns and a rocket battery were supposed to stop the Zulu in their tracks But the Zulu had other ideas Brave men indeed "One things for sure they've got more guts than we have boyo" ZULU

It astounds me how those primitive warriors did not just break and run when they discovered their enemy could kill them from hundreds of meters away. Surely they would have thought that if they were so powerful at long range, they would be even more powerful if they ever did manage to get close. Brave men.

It was most likely they noticed how long it took to reload rifles at the time. This made charging them easier since the less useful warriors could just run up front and die for the better warriors to reach the enemy in time. At least that's how I reason it

@goaway8871

Exactly. They had outdated guns themselves, and people get the tactics all wrong. The real reason the Zulu lost battles is that they *didn't* charge in as one and slaughter everyone, with the notable exception of Isandlwana where they had an overwhelming victory. The usual tactic of the Zulu was to beat stop and beat their shields after advancing a bit, to try and intimidate the enemy, which was unnecessary and suicidal against scared but well-trained people with modern rifles, ten thousand miles from home.

Through history, Native warriors have made charges against firearms and it has often been effective for a few reasons. Firstly: Guns are not one-hit kill weapons, apparently a boxer rebel took 5 rifle shots point blank before dying and the pirate Blackbeard took plenty of bullets before dying as well. Secondly: Guns were and are to this day psychological weapons, some natives didn't know guns were lethal and kept charging after being shot, soldiers often collapse after being shot because falling over is a ingrained response. Lastly: Adrenaline, which ties into the psychological aspect, charging at someone with a big sharp object builds adrenaline far more than sitting in a hole pot-shooting. There are other reasons of course but obviously I'm not saying guns are worthless, if you don't use stealth then you will be cut down, especially in today's fully automatic world of warfare.

SCENARIO: Ok you have the best men in the British Empire. You've been told to go support another army in the Africa campaign. You heard how your enmeny these..."Zulu's" only fight with sheilds and small spears. You feel so convenient in your men so you only take half of them. But you took your not so elite troops with you. You don't want your best men to die! But once you get to the camp that the other army was at you see...no one alive...their all dead. The troops that fought here were the second best in the British Empire. You regret not bringing your best troops. After setting up camp you here someone yelling for help. You send out four men to find him. It was a British soldier. But not any soldier it was the general that was leading the army at the camp befor you. He tried running away like a coward. He had a spear in his leg and hand stuck to the ground. He said he spoke their tongue so he knew what they said when they left. "Let the bird's have him." They got him out of the ground, and got him patched up. He was told to write down, and to tell it to the 2nd in command and 1st about every thing he knew about the Zulu's. He wrote down 10 sheets, and told the commanders 6 times. Then he was shot for going AWOL. Later that night they all heard moving, but nothing happened. In morning they all woke up and ate food. But in the afternoon they heard the chant of the Zulu's. That's when the knew the battle was going to start soon. And know one knows whose going to win. Because that's up to you Apollo if you choose to do my scenario! I really hope you do and thank you if you do! Have a nice day or night! Bye =D

nice story, but factually very bad, as the british never lost a battle that badly and only lost 1 battle (and pulled away from a second) and it was the zulus avoiding the main army and attacking the bagage camp [and almost losing to 1800 men, victory cam ewhen the brits ran out of ammo] compared to their 5 fairly major victories (where they were out numbered by 3 or more to 1, rockes drift being a meer 150 vs 4000), the zulus also did not have such a conempt for the british but feared and respected them, and there are no carrion birds in zululand ''leave him for the jackels" would have been better. and the zulu never killed everyone, even at their greatest victory they only kill 1300 out of 1800 and useuallyonly killed 11-18 men in most other battles, except in one ambush of 80 men where they killed 80 men (with 500-800 men). the zulu war was shocking to the pride of the British but it was not something particularly scary for the british army, and it was way worse for the zulus, the total britsh dead (civilian and military) is 1 900 (1 in 25 troops deployed) while the zulus lost 6 900 men (1 in 5 men available), loosing over 1000 men in pritty much every battle. the true horror was the anglo- boer war which was initially like ww1 with trenchs, barbed wire, even machine guns and lots of artillery for 2 years. and then turned into iraq as a brutal anti-partizan war for another 2 years.

Btw I am one of your followers but I am also a history teacher. The Battle of Isandlywna was considered the worst defeat of a modern army by native troops. the British started the war, and while the main British army marched towards the Zulu kings home village, he sent the majority of his army, over 20,000 men around to surprise the 1500+ British and native troops left on the slopes of the mountain at Isandlywna. They attacked and wiped the Brits out losing between 1-3,000 dead and an estimated 2000 wounded. This loss actually forced the collapse of the British government. Watch Zulu Dawn and Zulu, both awesome movies.

It's actually rather inaccurate that the line infantry struggle to hold their ground in melee. They very well trained and quite effective in holding the line against the poorly organised Zulus
@patrickvballegooyen

The Zulu army, in general, was actually quite well trained and organized. It made use of a variety of well thought out and presice battle tactics as well as battle formations that historically were quite successful, a good example of which would be their extensive use of the buffalo/bull horn battle formation. So to say that they were poorly organized is not particularly fair or accurate.

Although it’s an easy mistake to make, forming Square is the worst possible idea in that situation, square formation is to repel the cavalry, the reason the British was so good at fighting with rifles is because they had long thin lines which meant every single one of them could fire instead of just the front rank, although you were being surrounded so it seems like a good idea in reality many of the back of the square were pointing in the right direction meaning you were having less firepower in the front.

Though I hope socialists will have the stones to die standing when they have turned the place of their ancestors into such great safe places as South-Africa, Zimbabwe or Brazil (at best) and not seek to migrate elsewhere to spread the cancer of their failed ideology. I am not under the illusion you guys won't leave when the welfare state, justice departments or academia buckle under it's severe misuse. Because lets face it you are cowards and you have no qualms saving your own hides even if it means destroying anything you use to sustain yourself to preserve your pathetic emotional and luxury comforts. Parts of 2 companies of the 24th (roll calls place 139 men there, of whom 35 were there for medical attention) were stationed at Rorke's Drift, and successfully defended the station against an estimated 3,000-4,000 Zulu troops.

Some history for ya, it started at the battle of isandlwana where many British forces were killed, because the zulus formed an attack plan as a hook, which lead to surrounding the troops. The battle of Rorkes drift was about 120 men holding off 4000 zulus. With the use of strategic planning and iron discipline, they forced the zulus to retreat. 11 Victoria cross medals (the highest British ranking award), was awarded to 11 men, the most ever won in a battle.

Harlech, raise thy banners o'er us See the foe array'd before us Men of Meirion shout the chorus Cambria live for aye! Should until the cry is sounding To our land's remotest bounding And Eryri is resounding Cambria live for aye! The current verion is a modernised one, the soldiers at Rorkes Drift would have likely sung the older version, the first two choruses of which are above... the full welsh lyrics, as originally written are: Wele goelcerth wen yn fflamio A thafodau tân yn bloeddio Ar i'r dewrion ddod i daro Unwaith eto'n unGan fanllefau tywysogion Llais gelynion, trwst arfogion A charlamiad y marchogion Craig ar graig a g ryn.Arfon byth ni orfydd Cenir yn dragywydd Cymru fydd fel Cymru fu Yn glodfawr ym mysg gwledydd. Yng ngwyn oleuni'r goelcerth acw Tros wefusau Cymro'n marw Annibyniaeth sydd yn galw Am ei dewraf ddyn. Ni chaiff gelyn ladd ac ymlid Harlech! Harlech! cwyd i'w herlid Y mae Rhoddwr mawr ein Rhyddid Yn rhoi nerth i ni. Wele Gymru a'i byddinoedd Yn ymdywallt o'r mynyddoedd! Rhuthrant fel rhaeadrau dyfroedd Llamant fel y lli! Llwyddiant i'n marchogion Rwystro gledd yr estron! Gwybod yn ei galon gaiff Fel bratha cleddyf Brython Y cledd yn erbyn cledd a chwery Dur yn erbyn dur a dery Wele faner Gwalia'i fyny Rhyddid aiff â hi! Notice the lots of Cymry and Gymry in the Welsh version... lets just say there is a difference :) For example, Cymry fydd fel Cymru fu translates to Wales will be as Wales was.... which is NOT in the English translation. In the English Version Wele Gymru a'i byddinoedd (behold Wales and her armies) is replaced by Spears and arrows swift are glancing, in short, two entirely different songs, depending on the language :)

The movie is probably Zulu or Zulu Dawn. The first battle where most of the British forces were destroyed was at Roarke's Drift. The second battle was at Isandlawanna at a Methodist Church and the British, a much smaller force including native contingent and engineers, beat back several determined attacks by the Zulus and eventually the Zulus left and abandoned the battle.

Actually, that's backwards. Although the January rains impeded travel and the tall grasses of Zululand blocked their view, the British advanced into Zululand without taking normal precautions (such as scouts and sentries). Initially Cetshwayo’s (the leader of the Zulu Nation) policy had been to hold back his troops, remain on the defensive in this unprovoked war, and hope to negotiate a settlement. However, on January 22 Chelmsford advanced, leaving a third of his force unlaagered (lacking a protective encampment structure) at Isandlwana, and the Zulu army attacked. They annihilated the central British column at Isandlwana, killing 800 British soldiers and taking nearly 1,000 rifles and ammunition. Later that day a second Zulu force, led by Cetshwayo’s brother, Dabulamanzi kaMpande, attempted to overrun the British depot and mission at Rorke’s Drift (known to the Zulu as KwaJimu). This time the British, who had been forewarned by the few survivors of Isandlwana, were prepared. In a firefight that lasted nearly 12 hours and continued into the next day, some 120 British troops shot down more than 500 Zulu fighters.
