Today, the kids and I leave Joel behind and travel an hour north to the ancient city of Ayutthaya. We start with the spectacular reclining Buddha. You can easily see the similarities between it and the Golden Reclining Buddha in Bangkok.

We explored the grounds and imagined what this royal temple looked like before it was destroyed when Myanmar invaded in the 1700s.We then make our way to the Golden Buddha and learn how he lost his head not once but twice in his long, turbulent history.
From there, we entered Wat Di Sanphet and learned that this temple enshrined the ashes of three Ayutthaya kings and was almost entirely destroyed. However, in the 1950s, a major restoration of this historical city started, and many of the remains have been restored, like two of these chedi.
We used our imagination to picture what the palace would have looked like while staring at an empty field. It was built in the 1400s and destroyed with the invasion.Wat Mahathat is a large area where you can see the old pagoda built in the 1300s. And despite the invasion in the 1700s, it largely survived the burning looting but eventually lost the battle in 1911 when it collapsed.This is also the place where many people come to see the Buddha in the tree. They are not sure how it got here exactly, but many speculate that the looters left it, meaning they would return to collect it later.
After our history lesson, we went to the Safari Park, where we saw the dolphin show, the sea lion and otter show, and fed some giraffes.
We finally met Joel for a late lunch and then went to experience a local grocery store, where we picked up some local snacks to try.
So far, Thailand looks good on us! We love every minute of Bangkok, the culture, history, and the people!
