Just came from another video on these where they explained how they were painted bright colors to make them visible in smoke, 'because sometimes there's a lot of traffic in a fire area." Sometimes there's a lot a traffic in the pickup area too - 4:45 - 3 in a row! I like how you can see the propeller speed change when they touch the water surface and the drag on the plane increases.

Not exactly, at 37 million apiece, you can buy 10 Air Tractor Fire Bosses with 5 million left over for fuel and spare parts, One CL-415 cannot out work 10 Fire Bosses.

@@Agislife1960 You're one naive fella. Do you have any idea how much is the cost to maintain 10 individual Air Tractors compared to a single Canadair?
@Agislife1960
@Agislife1960 4 жыл бұрын
@@floatingchimney I was an A&P IA for twenty years, so no Im not naive about aircraft maintenance. One Fire boss is 3 million dollars ready to go. It only takes two Air Tractors to haul the same amount of water as the CL-415, which would be 6 million. Realistically speaking you could probably purchase and maintain 4 or 5 Air Tractors for the "$PRICE" of one CL-415. The 37 million price I quoted for the CL-415 was back when Bombardire built them, I'll bet they're more than 37 mil now. A small group of 3 or 4 water bombers like the Fire Boss can not only haul more water than one CL-415 for less money, but they can split up and tackle different fires at the same time.

What's amazing to me is the fact that the "scooper's" under the plane don't get ripped off as they're lowered in the water. The planes are flying at 80 knots when they hit the water and the amount of force on the "scooper's" must be incredible!!
@derbigpr500
@derbigpr500 6 жыл бұрын
Well not really, because the way scoopers are shaped is to give the least possible resistance when gliding through water. It's like pulling a knife through water in a sense.
@Holdfast1812
@Holdfast1812 3 жыл бұрын
@@derbigpr500 Believe is or not, the scoops are only 5 inches by 8 inches in size. But because of the speed they go through the water, they fill the 6000 liter tanks in 12 seconds. The new version (CL - 515) has 7000 liter tanks and can operate at night as well as a variety of other roles.

@@simonhill6267 Not really in the same class though. The 415 can scoop up 1600 gallons twice that of the Fireboss. It also has a range of 1500 miles compared to 800 or about 3hrs of operation time before refueling and it has a cruise speed about 80mph faster. More water, more flight time and faster from scoop to drop on fire. But of course 10 times the price. For governments that isnt really a problem but for smaller private firms Fireboss all day long. Fireboss is a great plane at a great price and is fantastic with smaller or just started fires in close quarters. A fleet of both would be awesome!

if you're talking about his maneuver on 5:25 you couldnt be more wrong. They (pilots) have to be extremely careful of avoiding boats, swimers, birds and many, many other things that can get in their path. With swimmers, you can see only their head sticking out of the water.. Imagine a diver just popping up... If you as a pilot even only think you just might have seen something, you have to break. Imagine a speed boat on an intercept trajectory, who most likely cant even see nor hear, or even expect the airplane to land - would you as a pilot risk landing or would you pull up and land a bit further back where things seem more safe to you? We're talking about single water drop here with a very possible risk of collision of plane with many, many other objects in the water, including people. 811 is not "the new guy" - he's just careful and professional. No fire, or single water drop is worth loosing the plane and quite possibly lives in some completely unwarranted risky move. Safety first!
