Howdy doody, frienderoonies! Today we're here for some sound design fun using UVI Falcon 2 to create some awesome cinematic drums using only some noise and a bit of clever processing!
This trick can be done in any DAW with any synth that offers noise and a filter, so feel free to follow along with Serum, Vital, or whatever your synth of choice may be.
This is a super fun way to add some huge drums to your next track or just some general cinematic flair to your next build up or intro or whatever you might be doing.

My addition to this: You can use a similar technique with ambiant noise recordings rather than straight up white noise. It's a bit more finicky to find the right recording and part, but you can get percussion with unique timbres and textures.

This is awesome. I've been loving noise-based drum synthesis for awhile now but I always end up wanting to bring it back towards a more natural sound. This has shown me that if you introduce enough movement you really can build some more multi-dimensional sounds just using basic elements, which is what I like. Thank you!

A year later this tutorial has helped immensely with sound design on the Syntakt; the secret was all in the filters and envelopes, and I was struggling to make some angry sounding toms on the groovebox. This got all the way there using SYbits machine as well as giving me tips to beef up the digital snares. Very helpful.

Great tutorial, I just have to ask: the expander filter you used looks like it comes ready with a very high resonance point at the cutoff, how much resonance would you dial in with other types of filters?

Hey, can you give me a recommendation for a synth that is flexible but also good in regards of workflow? I feel like there's a sweetspot, of course you can just go modular but, having to configure everything all the time is just not practical in my experience. I'm coming from Serum and am getting tired of many limitations (for example not being able to modulate how much something modulates another thing), but I like sticking to one synth and getting to know it very well, not really interesting in switching synths all the time. I'm thinking phase plant or voltage modular, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts on this?
@JasonGillmanJr
@JasonGillmanJr 3 жыл бұрын
Well, Voltage is essentially virtual modular, but still a solid solution (could rig up some pre defined patches and go from there). Phase Plant is another good one, and the sub model (if you can't/don't want to pony down the coin for the ultimate toolbox) is easilly the best I've seen ($10/mo and every 12 months you get a $100 credit that is cumulative). Pigments may also be one you might be interested to take a peek at as well. The only downside is that you only have two oscillators and two filters. However the modulation capabilities are pretty good. Further, you have your choice of analog, wavetable, sample, and granular engines for the oscillators. However, given you're coming from Serum, you may want to take a peek at Vital (vital.audio/). The nice thing about Vital is that you can get it for free.
@MattDoesSound
@MattDoesSound 2 жыл бұрын
I'm far from a synth expert, but Massive lets you modulate how much you're modulating your modulators. And then you can modulate that. Your computer might have a fit though.

somehow i couldn't replicate it in serum i used the LP12 filter and tried various cutoffs and Res, but i always lost the noise, either it was basically like before, so just plain white noise or if i moved the cutoff ever so slightly to the left all the noise was gone and only the mids and lows where hearable if however i changed the envelope for automating the cutoff or the range of the automation at the knob the only thing that really changed was that it was getting lasery I just couldn't find a setting that somewhat came close to your result after the first filter perhaps someone did it in serum and could provide me his filtersettings, that would really be nice :)

Falcon isn't free, but it's pretty badass. And it's limited only to your imagination, really. Cameron has raved about it in some of his other videos, check them out for a whirlwind tour and his overall review. If you're on a Pro Tools subscription, that comes with a free AAX-only plugin so it's free in that case (and just recently updated to 2.1.2).
