I will get a lot of flack for this, but in the mix the catalyst didn't sound that bad compared to the one knob thingy. It's a bit of a better fit for '80s metal then that one knob thing that sounds very predictable and safe. It cuts better through, and for the lead tones I really didn't hear much difference. Is it good? No. Is it as bad as described? Not in my opinion. Is it good enough for the price? Nah, the Katana rules that price segment in my opinion.

Katana is the pinnacle of guitar amplifiers. Sounds amazing for that price range, works well in any situation and you can play almost everything on it, works amazing with pedals and built effects are pretty good. I have the 50 MkII and if have to change it i will go for the Artist MkII, because you can choose the cab ressonance right from the amp. The only issue is how works with extended range guitar, the amp have this low mid ressonance and works amazing in 6 strings, but in extended range you have to tweak a little bit and the tone is affected in regular 6 strings guitars, but you can change the pickups or buy an Horizon Devices Precision Drive for control the low mid directly from the input and problem solved.

My opinion is that these cheaper practice amps are made to appeal to two main demographics; the experienced players using it as a pedal platform, hence the decent clean tone, & the beginner to intermediate players jamming in their rooms. Both of these demographics are much larger than those recording at home, so sadly they only focus on the main clean tone & make everything else just passable. The companies think its just not worth the extra expense to appease such a "niche community".

This dude is a clown. Exactly how is a really affordable practice amp that actually sounds good a failure? All of these practice amps in that $200-300 dollar price range sound really good, especially when compared to the crap practice amps they had out when I started playing in the late 90s. Whether you're buying a BOSS Katana, an Orange Crush, one of the various versions of Blackstar practice amps, line 6 (which is super unfairly maligned), Marshall Code, Fender Mustang etc., as a home hobbyist player, you are getting tonal options not possible 20 or 30 years ago on cheap practice amps and they sound pretty good for what they are. A cheap practice amp should not be compared to a $2000 dollar tube amp.

I know the Katana is the king of the modelling amps but for high gain I love the Peavey Vypr. It has the most crushing metal tones I've heard from a modelling amp. That being said it does have some issues (there's alot of unwanted noise when turned up, need a noise gate to curb that) but If crushing metal tones is your aim it's probably the best option for a small combo amp.

A speaker change helps a lot. Put a 75W Creamback in it and it noticeably improved. I've also griped about the lack of a speaker jack, so i made my own with a mojo jack, two pieces of wire and a couple male slide clips. Now I can just disconnect the female slide clips from the speaker and hook them to my homebrew jack and now I can hook up to anything. Should I have to do this? No, but I can't complain that hard for how cheap these are. Had to do the same with my Katana 50.

Hi, if you are thinking of getting this amp I wanted to provide a bit more context to this video. Glen is a producer and is reviewing this amp naturally from the perspective of recording and production. If you are intending to use this amp to play in your house and not worried about recording, it’s an awesome amp. Sounds great in the room and has some great features at the price point such as an fx loop so it works great if you have a pedalboard. I have wah and overdrive running to the front and delay and reverb etc in the back of the amp. It sounds awesome at any volume, and being able to reduce power from 60 to 30 or 0.5 watts is great if you want to practice or jam at night without disturbing your neighbours or family members. It’s overall great quality and really great for the price, and you will love it if these features are what you’re looking for. If I had a bunch of awesome 4x cabs like Glen, I’d probably get a 5150 amp head, but that’s not who the catalyst 60 is intended for. I mainly use the spark and this and both are pretty great for home use. Cheers

Gotta say, I think the Catalyst stacked up on itself way better in a mix than the Bogren did. Bogren definitely sounds better solo'd up though. Maybe it was just the IR you were using for the Bogren, but the Bogren mix sounded way more scooped and fizzy. I'm suspecting that the particular "fizz" of the Catalyst is helping glue the mix together a little bit? The Catalyst didn't sound great by itself, but I'm honestly surprised by how well you were able to make it work in a mix.

The boutique setting with a non metal guitar is where this amp shines. I feel like metal players don’t typically give these style amps a good rep because they go straight for the high gain models. I will say the high gain sounds aren’t great. But this amp was directed for players that want a classic clean/edge of breakup amp sound. Also with little to no effects to make it simple and more of a pedal platform. Amp sounds great with pedals. Katana is the way to go if you want a bunch of options. Katana amp sounds are lacking imo. I’d say if you want a good sounding clean/chime/edge of break up amp that is super light weight and loud, go for the catalyst. Not sure why they bothered putting high gain sounds on this amp. Obviously just my opinion tho!

Back in the late 80s in high school a friend of mine figured out a way to plug his guitar into his boom box. If he turned it up all the way and put all the EQ on the boom box up all the way, it gave a semi-distorted sound. That's what this reminds me of.

Glenn!!!! Question for QnA: How should we be setting the input gain in our interfaces to feed modeler VSTs? Playing with the interface gain is like introducing a huge dB range clean boost in front of the amp. How do I know I'm setting it to what the devs intended? What should we be aiming for and does it matter in the end? Example that you can leave out of the Q: Normally I'd set my input in my focusrite so I have about 6dB of headroom. However, when I got my HX Stomp where the input gain is fixed, my DI signal comes around at -32 dB. So you understand the confusion.

I was going to get a Line 6 Helix but looking at the prices and the fact that I use a small set of amp models (BOSS Katana MKII) and the KZfaq reviews on the NUX I decided to go with the NUX. For what I do the NUX sounds amazing and the tones are so easy to modify to your liking that I cannot recommend it enough. I've has many various of the Blackstar ID:TVP series over the years. They are MOST underrated digital amps ever, and probably the best sounding right out of the box. I'll never understand why Blackstar basically repackaged and renamed it as Silverline (without adding anything new to it, TBH) when they should have done more to push the original IDTVP series in the first place. On a positive note, the original amps can be had for a steal these days.

Looked like it had an FX loop, so if you really wanted to use your own IRs you could split that off and record the pedal send into a DI box/input. I like to do that anyway when I can, in case the mic gets bumped out of position partway through recording, less noise when re-amping to just send that to the FX return on the amp.

Hey Glen, I am a long time subscriber and listener to your channel. I took what you were saying about this new Catalyst series of amps and almost decided to pass, thinking it might be another failed updated Spider series of amps. Boy , I'm glad I watched a few other of my subscribed channels reviews. In my opinion, I feel you got this one wrong. I feel you either didn't give this amp enough time to really find the amps capabilities before laying down your judgement on it or you were so hyper focused that it didn't have a speaker output to allow hooking up to a bigger speaker cab to get the sound you obviously we're looking for. It's a 1x12 combo, so even setting it up as a 2x12, or 4x12 , it's still a 1x12. I noticed as well a lot of the time you had the presence and treble up on it. This is noticeable able to get up there on the higher register of highs, so playing this amp for a little while you would notice this and set the treble and presence lower to get the tone that would be more suiting to you ear. I think this amp is an amp that gives the user who is used to using a 2 channel amp that overall feel, with a controllable boost, as well as a nice selection of HX effects, and Reverbs. It also has the ability to run out the onboard DI to a p.a system, as well as the USB output run to your computer or interface for recording. The added attenuators is also a nice added touch. So with all that, I feel you were focused on something this amp can't give you.

It blows my mind that there's no speaker out, and even more so that you can't use your own IR's with it. I've used the helix stuff with Bogren IR packs and they sounded great. Line6 isn't the best with IR's on their high end stuff, but they let you load your own. So I know they have the ability to let you do that, but they just choose not to on this amp. And it's even worse here, because the IR's aren't even as good as the helix ones, or even the current pod.

At the middle of the review so far. But already two "big failures" marked here are also applicable to well-received Katana. Namely, first - absence of external speaker output - Kat combos lack this as well (speaker wiring mod to the rescue). And second, limited selection of built-in IRs. Katana also does not support external IRs in straight manner. E.g. to apply your impulse to Kat MK2, you need to get the signal from stereo expand out, and feed it to your own IR box. Now back to watching...

Music History tells me this might be a lemon! Thanks for sharing Glenn! FUN FACT: As Marcus Ryle (One of the founders of Line 6) tells the story, the name "Line 6" came about because the phone system at Fast-Forward Designs (what would become Line 6) only had 5 lines. Because the new guitar-related products were developed in secrecy, the receptionist used "Line 6" as a code word of sorts, and paging them for a call on Line 6 meant to stop any guitar or amp-related sounds so that they wouldn't be overheard by other Fast-Forward Designs clients or callers. :). As a player of all music instruments and a big fan of music tech, I wanted to add that both the line 6 Helix and the older 200 watt Line 6 Vetta Amp head, are both very worth while products. Have a great Day!
