Sue gave me the challenge of finding 'something which reminded me of Scotland' at this morning's three Berlin flea markets. The cold and snow was taking it's toll. Them in the afternoon the Berlin football league match between Wilmersdorf and Preussen. Oh dear.
Filmed December 2023 | Berlin, Germany.

Your experiences remind me of my own winter adventures in my big German city (and surroundings), including the frozen face after some time outdoors. I recommend old, large, man-made gravel pits or sand pits. Nice atmosphere in winter. The sun and the reeds!

Scott, I don't consider that a fail as the challenge to find something with a Scottish connection I think was a tough one. I'd say it was a perfect example of you producing a scenic, informative and entertaining video despite the weather conditions that affected things especially the match and which were all completely out of your control. Down side is when you do get the perfect conditions (weather, transport connections and access to decent coffee) I expect it to be nothing less than epic. 🤔😉🤣🤣. Seriously though please keep the excellent content coming 👍.

I got over to Berlin a couple of years ago and got to see BFC Preussen at their homeground, they have two pitches and thought for a time there wasnt a game as we were on the wrong pitch. It didnt snow then but the rain didnt stop and it came down in buckets. I looked like a drowned rat by the end of the game. I somehow managed to translate the ask for a pepermint tea to the old lady staffing the stall. it looked like the local drink of choice was espresso.

Munich airport closed for snow at the time you were filming. I sincerely hope they had more than the dusting I'm seeing on your film. If not, then it ranks up there with Heathrow in 2010 as pathetic.

Interesting that John Champion described the weather at St. James' Park a few weeks ago as "bitter and bone chilling" and I checked to confirm it was +3 degrees. However, your criteria for bitterly cold is a much more reasonable -6. Then again, he's a southern softie and you are a dour Scot. Personally bitter starts at -25 without wind chill, and bone chilling is -25 with windchill.

Flee markets do not interest me, nor does football. But many thanks for a video which showed plenty of Berlin U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains, and they do interest me! On a diiferent point, what is your opinion of Berlin Hauptbahnhof? It seems that people either love it or hate it. The architect who designed it does not like the end result! The overall roof he designed is much shorter than in his plans. The end result is that FIRST class passengers getting on and off ICE trains on the high level platforms running East-West are exposed to the elements.
@ag4444
@ag4444 7 ай бұрын
not true, the majority of people think it's simply fine. only a few people have an extreme opinion on it. I have lived in Berlin for 15 years and don't know any person who would either claim to love or to hate it. And hardly anyone complains about being exposed to the elements. it's more like an internet myth that this is a major problem but in reality hardly anyone cares. I don't even know of a major German train station where not at least part of the platform is exposed.

I'm surprised to see snow on the pavements as it is a legal requirement in Germany for house owners and caretakers to clear snow and ice from the pavements in front of the property. I've been to the third flea market in Tiergarten on the Strasse des 17.Juni and it was heaving but, to be honest, it was summer then and a heck of a lot more stalls. Sorry, Scott, but you have to practice the pronunciation of Preussen a bit more.
@ag4444
@ag4444 7 ай бұрын
most pavements you saw in the video don't belong to any specific properties. I live in Mitte and hardly anything was cleared in my area, certainly not by individuals. the city cleared the main walkways, but 80% of the pavements I walked on were snow-covered for 5 days and it was super annoying to walk.
