LONGER VERSION: Awaking from a long slumber, I clawed my way out of whatever box someone had apparently shoved me in and flung away the dirt that had made its way into what was left of my hair. I glanced around at various dark and bizarre images. The fire that lit the eyes of that pumpkin seemed unable to consume it--like a mockery of the Burning Bush. I wondered if that dark figure in the distance holding the scythe was Death. I blinked through the fog in my eyes and shook my head, hoping that would help to unscramble my brain. What were these blades of grass doing growing on this shelf I was looking over? Stretching my unusually stiff limbs, I realized it was no shelf--just a bit of ground I was apparently climbing out of! Upon that realization everything came back in a rush. The first thing I recalled was the beginning of my pursuit of wisdom long, long ago. I had been enthralled with the writings of Lovecraft, and above all with his account of the _Necronomicon_ . I felt there must surely be such a thing. Some truth surely stood behind this fiction. After a long search, I found no clues to the existence of such a book, yet remained convinced that Lovecraft was telling the truth in some manner: There were such Powers in the world. Such wizards who could cheat death had lived, died, and yet continued on this earth. And it was surely possible that the right scholar, prepared to sacrifice anything for that rarest of knowledge, could become such a wizard. If no one else had ever done it, I surely would! Abandoning my search for the _Necronomicon_ , I searched for years for whatever truths lay behind it. It was easy to read Holinshed, still easier to scoff at the self-important scholars who wrote off the best parts as mere fictions! The _Daemonologie_ of King James was useful enough, but it pointed me to better sources. Years I spent cloistered in near-forgotten European villages, uncovering in dark rooms the darker secrets that lay hidden in the parchments of mad monks who had tasted of these truths before their minds were broken. Gradually, I accustomed my own mind to the dark light of secret knowledge, strengthening it through use so that never would I through any spiritual weakness born of Christian piety fail where those fool monks had failed. Yet deeper and deeper I dug, passing through Hebrew pseudopygraphae and on to long-unseen cuneiform tablets resting in forgotten tombs, preserving echoes of the mysteries delivered by angels to the god-kings before the great Flood. Well I remember my first contact with the Powers beyond. Having searched as far back in history as the surviving records allowed, almost I began to despair of finding the final truths. By sheer chance I found myself one day in an asylum, listening to one side of the discourse the schizophrenics held with their Voices. By luck--or by the aid of the Powers themselves, who respect the resolve of a man able to reach up to their level--a thought came to me. _Perhaps the voices were real, and perhaps they were themselves citizens of that Kingdom of Powers beyond the veil of matter which I had so long sought!_ Mere months I spent pursuing this hypothesis before the Voices spoke to me directly, abandoning the poor, broken patient whom I left in that padded room to his lonely fate, returning to my own library with the Voices trailing me. I spoke long with them before I learned their true nature. The truth was easy enough to understand from my studies in the _Book of Enoch_ , and it was small challenge to test with simple experiments. These were but the lowest rungs of the spiritual Powers. No friends of mine were they, for these were the spirits of the Nephilim, condemned to wander till the end of time, hovering over the surface of the earth but never touching the ground, always hungry but never eating, filled with lust and never satisfied, wreaking their malice on the sons of Men. But they could be useful. I sought from them to be introduced to their own fathers, the Watchers. They asked for a terrible, terrible price--as they thought it. But to replicate their mighty deeds on earth was a pittance to such a lover of knowledge as I. Long past having lied, stolen, and robbed graves, adding murder to my list of accomplishments was a small price to pay for that knowledge I so coveted. It was on a sunlit hill on a summer's day that I met with the Watchers for the first time, but their presence chilled the very earth beneath me no less than it chilled my bones. Yet my heart leaped to meet the Powers who had so long manipulated the affairs of men, and I rejoiced at last to be among those few who were taken into their auspicious counsel. For all my years of laborious study, much, much to learn I still had from my new Masters. Yet they found in me no less willing a student than Og, Sihon, Nimrod, Ashgazzhul, or the great Nyarphthothel King of Ulthar before the Flood. I leapt to each new insight. I embraced each new test as they required me to seal my loyalty with deed after dark deed. But Knowledge was my only lust now-- the Knowledge of the Watchers! Potions, incantations, spells-- manipulations of star, sky, wind, tree, earth, stone, darkness! The secrets of the gods! Lessons taught to giant-kings long ago! Powers to twist, turn, subjugate, subdue, control, and command! The power, above all, to drink of the immortality of the gods themselves-- _the power to cheat Death!_ For one set on winning such a pearl, no price was too great, and I soon won the right to perform the Ritual I longed to perform. The power to cheat death would be mine-- _for one night each year, each year until Judgment, though dying, I would live!_ I selected for my grave a spot on the edge of a village, a stone's throw from the hill where first I met my eminent Teachers. Having already used much gold, caring not for such trifles, to secure the plot for my own use, I now paced to and fro on it from midnight to dawn, sprinkling potions and blood on the ground and saying words of Power. Yet one thing remained. My Teachers met me again at dawn and demanded a final Test. For the first time in years, a shiver of fear slipped through me, but it swiftly passed, and I hardened my resolve to their final demand. It must be done on the following midnight, and I had only to prepare the rope, carry the ladder, and choose the tree. A gnarled old oak on the very spot would do nicely, I deemed. The Watchers and the Voices spoke to me together as I ascended the steps--a cacophonous welcome to the company of their own. I laughed as I kicked the ladder away. And suddenly--I awoke! I awoke from a long slumber, flung the dirt from my hair, looked out at Halloween night, stretched my limbs, and remembered my long efforts in pursuit of what I had finally achieved. I was back at last, back for a bit of fun on Halloween. And, of course, there was nothing to fear. If that figure with the scythe was Death himself, well, no matter-- _I had met him already!_ No, there was nothing to fear--not for me. At some point in the future, some final trumpet would surely summon me to my eternal doom, but for now, and for everyone else, it was I who should be feared! _I, who was back from the dead on this Halloween night!_
