My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

I am amazed by the simple yet complex beauty of Europe. Living in Alaska I am exposed to a rugged and raw natural grandeur. But I am in awe of the beauty of the stacked stone walls... How the moss covers them and gives them an ethereal fairyland quality. Thank you and Stephanie Jarvis for sharing these amazing parts of the world.

Dear Michael, this is so very amazingly beautiful. Visually, topically, musically, it flows as smoothly together as the beautiful streams you depict. The English Lake District is immensely beautiful. One can see how Beatrix Potter was drawn to the area, and chose to spend time there. It certainly inspired her. I find the rolling hills, moss covered fieldstone walls, waterways, and paths so inviting and idyllic. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us. Michael, thank you for sharing your beautiful Beatrix Potter adventures with us, the footage of the landscape literally brought tears to my eyes. I love England so much and long to go for another visit to the land of my ancestors, my Mum was born in Newcastle and raised in London. My Nan was from Forest of Dean and my Grandad from Sheffield. I feel such a deep connection to the country and had never felt more at home in a place I’d never been before when I first visited. England is in my DNA and your videos helped me remember that special connected feeling so thank you very much. I visited the Lake District 10 years ago and it's still stunning as even then! I loved visiting, it was one of the things I will never forget in my life. When you're there you feel like time has stopped, you can take a deep breath and feel a bit of peace in your soul. I loved every second of that visit, I hope to one day go back. Thank you for this, it brought me so many great memories! :)

Thank you Michael for such vistas before our eyes! With the music it is so evocative that it fills our souls with wonder. The hues of greens, yellows and Beatrix Potters humanitarian efforts to leave us such a tangible testimony of the beauty our world still contains and that unspoiled is the true gift she left us. The Lake District is lush and beautiful! In 2007 I was all set to stay in Carlyle on my first trip to the UK from Canada. Sadly had a falling out with the friend and ended up staying in Grimsby instead. Your video has inspired me to want to visit this area one day. Thanks also to Luke for the history lesson along the trip. Much appreciated 😊.

This is so lovely to revisit the landscape through your eyes - I was there in the Lakes District in Dec 2019 and missed out on visiting Hilltop and doing these walks, it's just beautiful to come along with you (from my armchair in Melbourne Australia!) Loving your videos of the Chateau and cottage and local landscape - but it's a thrill to find these of the UK too. Armchair travelling will have to do for now. I am finding it all very informative and inspiring, your respect for the landscape and history is lovely to see. Good luck and best wishes. Now, back to the binge!

Michael, Thank you for sharing your delightful trip to the Lake Country with your friends to visit Mrs. Beatrix Potter's properties. I enjoyed this 'travel log' so so much and learned a lot about B. Potter whom I adore !! It was like being there. I am so glad you enjoy her works as much as I do and I am so happy to see how you are going to put your cottage together in the style she lived in. Cant wait to see the inside of her cottage upon your return when it re-opens. The beauty of your filming, editing and producing is absolutely wonderful. I forsee your creative career future becoming a big time movie director and producer. I believe you have such an inate feel - like Stephanie does on what scenes go well with the music background you chose. It is fun to watch every vlog you do, get better and better and better. Chosing the right subject matter even so simple (like baking and decorating the rose cake) is really difficult I am sure.
