It disappointed me to hear that the famous Grand Lake Stream gets stocked with landlocked salmon. I assume that it also gets stocked with brook trout. Some of the salmon that you caught had frayed tails, which could indicate that they were stocked. The only rivers in Maine that I fished are the Roach and the East Outlet, and only on two trips in 2004 and 2006. I believe that the salmon that I caught there were wild. I want to fish in Maine again, but I will be sure to search out rivers that only have native trout and salmon. This was a very informative video.

What a day on the water! My vote goes for the catching and cooking videos, always look for some new ideas and well shot content. As a side note, I managed a few Land Lock Salmon up north on a camping trip using your Golden Retriever flies that you sent to me. I did not manage any pictures because I thought the water was too warm to handle the fish too much. Hopefully this fall when things cool off I can send you some.

Yes, this was a day I won't soon forget that's for sure! That's awesome to hear! No worries on the pictures, fish health comes first if it's going to be released. I applaud you for not taking them actually 😂 Can't wait to see your fall catches though assuming the weather finally cools off...

100% agree on confidence baits. I have 4-5 bass fishing confidence baits...lures that I know I can work well enough and if they aren’t hittin em, they’re just not feelin that pattern. Same thing with the fly rod...a white or black woolly bugger/nymph, adams and terrestrials. For some reason, I really like to see my fly...see the fishes reactions, get a sense of whether I should switch things up or run it a few more times. That and I loathe indicators...I’ll use em if necessary but only if it’s reeealllyyy necessary. Again, it’s just not a part of my “confidence” rig...

Absolutely epic day! I'm in the market for a trout fly rod/reel. I have an older Redington rod/reel combo and it has treated me well. Probably going with another. Definitely like the catch & cooks. I pretty much do the same with my fish. I predominantly catch and release, but if I get one that is in rough shape, I'll keep it if I legally can.

I love the catch and cooks in the remote areas where no one else is around. I can’t wait to head back up to Maine in October for grouse. 4th year in a row. I was a little bummed to find out you can’t fish in streams during that time since I’m new to fly fishing and wanted to try up there. I’ll be in the nmw west of Ashland.
@MainelyOutDoors

I'll keep at them then! Yeah, that is too bad but hard to beat the NMW for grouse hunting that time of year. If you can, try to get to GLS after your trip that will still be open

Jesse, I am not a fly fisher type gal. It has always intrigued me. I love the catch, clean, and cook videos. Could you please explain (briefly, I know you're a busy guy) the reason you pull the line in and not reel? It seems to me like it would get all bird nested. Thank you so much! I am watching from California.
@MainelyOutDoors
@MainelyOutDoors 4 жыл бұрын
Sure thing! Well the major goal is to get the fish on the reel. That becomes more important when its a big fish this way you can use the drag to fight the fish. However, if the fish is running faster than you can reel in the line the number one goal is to keep the line tight between your rod tip and the fish. So if the fish starts running at me I will strip line as fast as I can to keep it tight and take in line on the reel whenever I get the chance and don’t risk losing the fish from loss of tension. As for the line getting tangled it can happen, however, fly line is pretty thick and normally won’t get knotted up too bad. The major trouble of the line is it will get tangled in sticks, rocks, and your feet if you’re not careful. Hope that helps I’m sure others with more time can go over this in more detail since a lot of times its case specific.

@@mbassett221 Sounds good! Id be happy to tie some flies up for you you can send me an email or submit a custom fly order on my website (www.mainely-outdoors.com). A 3 wt will be fine I got a 4 because i sometimes use larger flies than a 3 can handle. GLS is great for euro nymphing! its shalow and narrow in many spots that you'll find fish moving upstream in the fall. Check ot my newer nymphing videos to get an idea on that. (spring 2021 season). Swinging wets in the fall would also be a great option and a familiar way for you to start with the spey rod
