Wow, quite a find! Lots of amazing equipment like this ends up in the trash because technicians lack the ability to repair it and owners don't want to spend the money to have it properly repaired. Tragic really, because most faults with these and other vintage amplifiers and receivers are very fixable.

@@LiquidAudio Speaker hookup part lost its springy feel but managed to hook up at least the right side A and it sounded amazing even for cheap 2000s Sharp speakers. Also, upon closer inspection its a G5500. The woodgrain case is beat up at the corners and the aluminum dials and face have light scruffs. Its no museum piece but I'll try to make it look decent. I wanna swap out the bulbs for white LEDs at least but don't know what to do about the woodgrain. I originally thought of making my own case with my 3D Printer, sort of bringing it to the 2020s without making it look bad

Hi and yes I feel your pain! You will likely only ever find fake 2SK97, best to move on with using two separate single FETs or a dual LSK389 or something else that matches the specs of the Sony part. Singles will need to be hand matched and graded the same of course, so you need to buy more than you need and have a way to characterise them. Agreed, the 33000 is indeed ridiculous and might be the ultimate monster receiver. My customer who owns this G-9000 is actually looking for one!

Hi Reuben, thanks for your kind words. The best advice I can give you is that if you don't have a lot of experience, take her to an expert with the experience, tools and test and measurement equipment to get the job done properly. If you have a variac and can measure transistor gain, ESR, DC offset and quiescent current, then by all means have a go yourself. Things to look for are noisy transistors, transistors that have drifted in terms of hFE, leaky capacitors, fuse resistors that have gone high, dirty contacts and connectors and noisy switches and controls. This particular G-9000 is still running strongly for my customer and almost everything in these great old units is fixable. Good luck and get in touch via my website if you have other questions.

Hi Mark, glad you liked the video. I use a range of lab and mil-grade capacitors, and my choices depend on customer budget, equipment type / value and where in the circuit a part is going. In general I can recommend Panasonic, Nippon Chemicon, Elna, Nichicon, Epcos, Vishay, Kemet etc. Remember though that all manufactures make ranges of products, from cheap through to expensive and really good. You need to consider usage in-circuit, ESR, ripple current, voltage temperature and so on.

Hi Jason, hard to estimate a repair cost without seeing and properly testing and diagnosing your unit. These quad receivers are complex and often present with several faults. I worked on one recently and it also had suffered output transistor failures. If you are anywhere local to Perth though, get in touch and we can book her in and figure out exactly what the problem is for you and go from there.

They sound great but there's a lot going on in one box. The AU-9500 is a lovely thing, it doesn't have quite the balls this has, but they sound very good, possibly better, but smaller. Pre/power separation is always the way to go, if possible. Monster receivers hold a lot of appeal though!

Hi and well done on the free G-2000! Possibly some basic things to look for but keep in mind that things that are obvious to me are not to most other people. Even if you do find charred components for example, replacing them in a home environment is not recommended in most cases. The most obvious one is fuses, some will be easily visible, others will not. Beyond this point we need to get technical, so if you replace 3AG/M205 fuses and they blow again, just take her to an expert for a repair. Every piece of electronics of this age will need professional attention, service, adjustment, lubrication and so on and it makes sense to do all that whilst it's in for repair.

Hi, I'd be happy to assist if you live locally and can get your receiver to me for inspection. The protection light indicates and fault and is saving further damage from occurring. It needs to go to someone able to test and trace the fault/s, don't be tempted to mess around here if you don't know what you are doing, the right technician will be able to sort this for you though!

Hi Marcos, I'd love to help but I don't sell service parts on their own, only as part of the work I do here, on equipment brought to me for service, repair and restoration. Parts can be sourced from the usual suppliers like Mouser and Digikey though modern replacements will need to be determined in many cases.

Agreed, very interesting! I have a customer out there somewhere who is meant to be bringing me an SX-1980, don't know anyone with a 22000 or 33000 yet though...

​@@LiquidAudio The Sansui G22000 weighs 92 pounds. The Sansui G33000 weighs 101 pounds. The Pioneer SX1980 weighs 78 pounds. So the Sansui's were built better. Also Sansui made some amazing integrated amps and tuners in the mid to late 70s. My friend has the Sansui AU-9900 and Sansui TU9900 tuner from 1976 and they sound great. The Sansui TU9900 and Sansui TU919 are 2 of the best tuners i'v heard. The only better tuner i'v heard is the Yamaha CT7000 from the 70s

Hi Dan, thanks for the specs. I'm familiar with them, I work on all sorts of the craziest gear as youll see if you check out my channel and website, but I'd like to work on one for sure! I agree that the Sansui tuners you mention are two of the best out there. I actually run one of the few remaining full tuner alignment workshops anywhere. My modified Marantz 125 is one of the very best tuners I've heard. Killer tuner when properly aligned and tweaked. CT-7000 is very cool!

Another guy that has a vintage audio repair channel had both at some point. I cant remember his channel but it was a video where he was working on his SX1980 and for a moment he mentioned a Sansui G33000 in the background. It'd be cool if Amir over at AudioScienceReview forum could get a really nice vintage receiver in to test against all the new stuff hes done. Just waiting for someone to send one in, people have to donate their gear and send it to him. He'll test it and post the results on the forum then send your gear back to you.

Hi, it shouldn't smell. Smells can be caused by many things, examples of things that can cause bad smells include: contamination from previous environment, eg smoker; liquid ingress; failed or failing capacitors; contamination from low-quality / bad cleaner; insects; even a small, dead animal...! Sounds like it needs a proper clean. This takes time, the right technique and chemicals. I hope you get it resolved.

Bought an Marantz from a heavy smoker...it's the worst. I have heard of guys in the ham radio world take the tuner out and put all the boards thru the dishwasher...i do not recommend...yet...i had a devastating flood. 5 ft of cold clean water. I have a 52 amp power supply that is flawless after 6 hours under water...been working like a champ for 4 years.

Hi Deniss, all caps can and will eventually fail, this is no secret or revelation. The problem is too many hobbyists adopt a shotgun approach because they don't know any better and replace perfectly good parts because they read somewhere that they 'should'. Most don't own the sort of gear to be able to properly test capacitors, leading to a proliferation of shotgun parts replacement. If a filter cap is bad it should be replaced. If it isn't, it shouldn't, unless there is a technically valid improvement being made. I've seen and worked on thousands of vintage Sansuis and others @ liquidaudio.com.au. The filter capacitors in most, but not all, were fine.

Yep they are, I think I mention this in the video at some point, here are a couple of bigger receivers, but all of them, including the 9000DB are BIG units...!

Sometimes I do, but my focus on our core business of customer repairs, and my resultant lack of time and energy mean my videos are made very quickly. Even with almost zero editing, I can barely get them out!

You definitely should be taking something like this to a professional. This is a priceless, irreplaceable piece of vintage hi-fi. It needs expert attention and when properly fixed, will reward you with many more years of pleasure. Yes, this will cost money, but it's always worth it!

The first easy thing to do with these is look for that switch on the side that has the protective plastic slot piece screwed in to keep it from moving. Remove that protective piece and cycle that switch a few times. This is one of the main causes for a channel that is in and out. Clean that switch.
