don't know if it's already been said in comments, but you don't have to use the Direction Mixer to achieve stereo panning. If you click a right button on the pan knob in the inspector section - you can choose between the balance pan and stereo pan - change it to stereo pan and here you go :) thanks so much for video, it is really helpful! good luck!
@joetotino
@joetotino 3 жыл бұрын
Yes for sure that’s an option. But I like to have the extra control. Direction mixer allows me to control stereo spread, but also allows me to easily bypass track panning when mixing. Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video!

Thanks so much for this Joe! This is a truly fantastic video and I learned so much. In terms of your actual composition process though do you write in Sibelius and port the midi into Logic, then work on the sounds from there (& add in the risers etc) or do you actually compose with Logic?
@joetotino
@joetotino 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Good question. I actually start and finish in logic more often than not. Admittedly, I much prefer the workflow in a DAW and editing piano roll MIDI over working in a notation software. If anything I’ve done the opposite, composed in logic, snd exported for Sibelius. But only when making score for live players, which in this style of music is unfortunately rare. Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for this, great walkthrough! About the panning, you probably get a different result when having the direction mixer first in the chain, but as far as the actual panning goes, you can change it to work as a stereo panner by right-clicking and choose stereo. That will make the pan in the mixer behave just as the direction mixer (though no limit for the spread)
@joetotino
@joetotino 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! For sure about the panned, I just like to have the extra control. I now have the direction mixer first in the chain in my template. Always experimenting though! Thanks again!

You can actually also reduce or enhance the stereo spread when using the pan knob in its Stereo mode by making the green circle wider or narrower.

Really nice work! Here's a tip you might like: Instead of using the Direction Mixer, you can now right click on the pan knob and change it to stereo mix (or Binaural). It's the same thing as the direction mixer, but involves a couple of less clicks and you can easily see and tweak your stereo pans.
@josephtotino7048
@josephtotino7048 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for sure! I like using the direction mixer as it give me more control. I can bypass all my pan plugins easily to A/B things quicker. Also like the addition of the width knob to control the effect. But thanks for your comment, glad you liked the video.
@decigallen6249
@decigallen6249 3 жыл бұрын
@@josephtotino7048 You can adjust the width too with stereo spread, but I totally get where you're coming from with bypassing.

Hi, question about the panning. I’ve heard from other audio engineers, that some of these libraries are already prepared with the instruments placed in the stereo image, according to where they would go in the real orchestra stereo image. Therefore, I’ve been told never to pan the virtual orchestral libraries. Of course I’m sure it depends on the library as well? How do you tell which libraries are already pre-panned according totheir natural stereo image and which ones need to be panned to achieve a more realistic visual audio representation of an orchestra? Sometimes when I don’t pay them, I feel like all the sounds are sort of on top of each other but yet sometimes when they are panned, they sound unnatural as well, and what I was told was that I’m panning sounds that are supposed to already be where they were originally sitting in the stereo image. What are your thoughts on all of this?

This is amazing! Do you think I would be able to do something like this with Logic Pro X stock plugins? Are the plugins you are using given by Logic? I loved this keep it up.
@joetotino
@joetotino 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! As to your question, I’m sure it’s possible to create orchestral music with stock stuff. I’m just not sure you can expect super professional results as those sounds are quite limited in what you can do. I’m sure they are great sketching tools, to get an idea down, but when comparing that to a third party library, the level of detail and control will bring a new dimension to your tracks. But give it go!
