Thank you for your video. I live in the suburbs of Detroit, so I'm in the rust belt that you mentioned. My inclination is to choose 6 point sockets and wrenches for everything unless I'm forced to use 12 point. I've had too many rounded fasteners. Some of these companies try to design their 12 point sockets to minimize the possibility of rounding the fastener. I would be highly interested in seeing you test whether they can remove rusted bolts, although I'm not sure how you could perform that test in a practical manner with so many wrenches.

Its great to see some unbiased review video. After everyone making videos on how great icon is, AFTER getting a sponsorship. Dont get me wrong Im happy they are moving up, but after selling themselves. I gave in and bought a metric wrench set and a stubby ratchet. First use out the box, I basically deleted the teeth on a wrench trying to a break a tie rod nut lose, and the ratchet binds up. Feels like Ive been lied to by all these guys on here who keep "reviewing" these tools

Snap-On wear so well, mine are 20+ years old and they still hold tighter than a new tekton/pittsburg/sunex. I have some Hazet too and they have been great but the Snap-On really feel nice.

Like the comparison video of the wrenches. When I first started I used craftsman and they wanted to round the fasteners pretty easy from what i thought but then I went to snap on I really like them especially if there going to be in my hands all day but definitely for a beginning tech craftsman or Milwaukee or another brand will do just fine

It would be nice to see what kind of deflection the wrench does along the length under load, and then how much the open end spreads under load. You could use a shop press and a load cell to record the ft. Lbs. of torque this happens at. You may have to use a bolt fixture or welded bolt for this too. I like the fit and finish results so far. Cheers

My snapon wrenches are around 25 years old and are first year pat. Pending flank drive and have been great with no signs of failure and have been used and abused. The other set I have is SK and not faired out as good only bought them because they were cheaper.

There’s always variances in tolerance it’s just the nature of products and knowing from experience is of great value to everyone especially the sharing of this information. Many should find this helpful in obtaining good tools without the guess work. Six point tools are invaluable in many tough situations but owning a variety is a must.

Broke a couple of wrenches already. Used a Pittsburgh 1 1/2" wrench to loosen, and tighten bolts, from an axle to finals on a 988F wheel loader, but using a hydraulic crane, and lifting strap. Broke a 1/2" Craftsman Professional using a cheater bar to bust a drive line bolt. On the same bolt, bent a 1/2" old school Craftsman using a cheater bar.

Are box end wrenches ever really an issue. In all my years of wrenching I have never broken one, or had one strip. I also have never used a cheater bar or anything like that on them. I do double wrench them, but also never had an issue on doing that either. I also have stayed pretty cheap on these while upgrading other tools. Craftsman, Tecton. I just ordered a set of Sunex with a range from 8 to 32 with no skips for $120.I needed the larger odd sized ones for a few recent jobs, so now is the time to buy.

I'm just starting out as a tech and I'd say Wright 958 set w/ Wright Grip is best value on the market right now for combination wrenches, ordered that 7-24mm for $250 a month ago from a local distributor. For reversible ratcheting box ends I paid visit to my local snap on man and ordered the 10mm-19mm flank drive plus set, he gave me the 7mm-19mm because that's what he had in stock. SK X Frames look pretty nice if your looking for 6-point ratcheting. Hope this helps those looking to get quality U.S.A wrenches

A long Coupling nut is probably the only way to test this. A hex key is harder than any nut or bolt so it compromises the wrench grip especially the open ends with teeth. I think all but a few open end wrenches will twist off a 10mm or 12mm bolt in coupling nut without problem.

Good test thanks for doing this! Maybe as you compare, you could push the better ones forward, and the below average back? One correction: Matco USA was not made by Armstrong. Danaher (who at one point owned Matco), made Matco, Armstrong, and Craftsman Professional. Note: The first Craftsman Professional wrenches were made by SK then again later by Danaher. Danaher was sold/formed APEX Tool Group. If you need the source material for this please let me know. I have a plethora of research material. Thanks again.

Weld the bolts to a piece of steel. Close enough to the head so that the shaft cannot twist in two and your will either bend/ break the wrench or round off the head of the bolt.

I feel that the 15 degree offset on the boxed end is antiquated . I would rather have about 10 degrees . Also wrench or socket , seems like snapon is always the hero on rounded fasteners , when all else fails . P.s. Grind down el cheapo, Pittsburg, for thinner or custom shorties in a pinch .
@Rprecision4 жыл бұрын
My only suggestion is to measure the head of the bolt. Everyone is assuming it is within SAE/ISO9001 specs. Sometimes bolts are made out of spec, or on the lower end of the tolerances. Measuring with a tape measure that's off isn't probably helpful. What if you tap a hole in a good steel plate, thread in a nut and bolt, run a stout weld around it. Give that a spin

My recommendation is use 12 mm or 14 mm bolt head. Better chance of breaking see how much torque you can put on it before it round the boat head off. or a better break. Just a tip to new guys getting into the diesel and primarily heavy truck industry don’t buy a set of toothed wrench for your first set. Yes they are nice and I love my flank drive plus snap on wrecches on metal bolts or hydraulic fittings. But they suck for brass fittings on air systems. Personally I have a old school set of black Blackhawk wrenches and brass fittings is all they get used for. Yes down the line but your nice toothed wrench. But at first if you can’t afford both don’t get the toothed one.

When testing wrenches; who tests the bolt heads? Aka is the bolt head up to standards?
@swaggin1234254 жыл бұрын
I get where your coming from but I mean at the end of the day it's the same bolt being used on all the wrenches so they all have the same baseline they are testing on if it's a quarter of a mm from being a perfect 17mm bolt then all the wrenches results will be tweaked by that quarter of a mm and the results of which is looser and tighter will be still be accurate so would that actually make much of a difference at all?
@tonyb84434 жыл бұрын
@@swaggin123425 if the test is to see how tight of a fit I would say yes. If a die to make the bolt is old the bolt head would be over sized, and a tighter fit in the wrench. If the die is new the bolt head would be smaller and a looser fit. Like anything there is going to be an allowable tolerance. To save money a manufacturer will use a die as long as possible. The question should be, what wrench size opening would provide for the maximum bolt head tolerance. ( And through experience is oversized better to deal with rust, but not too big to cause rounding) Someone on here might know if there is a ASME/ANSI standard or some other standard to reference that all manufacturers are to follow.
