@@TheVoiceLoveCo Hello Christi, I enjoyed it too :) Do you think you are ready for some metal Epica now? "Sancta Terra" doesn't count as it is not a typical Epica sound and many people only recommend it because the live version features Floor. Are you OK with harsh male vocals or not really? Epica often use duality called "beauty and the beast", male harsh vocals (Mark Jansen) and female angelic soprano (Simone). They also have some songs without male growls, but most songs have at least some (in some songs just 10-20 seconds in total). Let me know please, I'll give you some suggestion ;)

Metal fans often are underrated as music lovers; Metal however can be very complex in its structure; varying meters, key changes, chord progressions, etc. as opposed to (modern) pop music. It is often said musicians in metal are amongst the very best around and that certainly goes for the vocalists as is demonstrated here.

I was an instrumental jazzrock enthousiast for most of my life. About half a year ago I experienced an earthquake when I discovered Nightwish, Ayreon, the Gentle Storm, Epica and especially the involved singers. I suddenly got goosebumps from totally different things. And now this......tears in my eyes.....what is happening? We are the lucky ones.....We live in the times of the Goddesses. This amount of shear beauty probably expends my life by years by adding so much endorfine......thank you ladies.

I grew up in 80s-90s when parents were so scared s#!+less seeing their sons and daughters listening to long-haired bands playing music with distorted guitar, accusing it as Satanic or uncultured music. The fact is, many of metal musicians were (and still ARE) very educated, cultured, well-versed in a lot of things, including the most considered "cultured" music, the classical. Now we have symphonic metal sub-genre in 21st century, in which symphonic elements are played and classical songs are performed by metal artists well-versed in classical and opera music. If my parents were still alive, they would be shocked by this performance.

@@TheVoiceLoveCo Btw Christi, did you know Simone used to sing (she tried to) like a mezzo? Allegedly, in the beginnings of her career one of her vocal coaches told her she was a mezzo so she tried to sing like a mezzo. Today Simone says she can't listen to her own voice from that era (I think first 2 albums) but that voice was actually quite unique and I love it. I see other people in comments often saying they loved that young Simone's voice too. I would be curious to hear your opinion. The technique might be "wrong" but at least she didn't sound like dozens of other singers. Like I said, I really love it! Would you like to try it? Here's Simone at the age of 19, in a 2004 live TV session: "Cry For the Moon" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bt9dosma3bOtdHk.html Please, use the link above rather than some random link. Some old Epica videos have really poor audio quality. The link above is very good quality video.

Hello Christi, it might come as a wonderful surprise to you: there is a huge number of metal fans out there that actually are actively involved in classical music - baroque and renaissance era especially - and because of that interest specifically enjoy the many resemblances between the metal genre and classical music (and opera). Vivaldi is also amongst the great influencers of the metal genre and as it happens, his Stabat Mater is right up there with Pergolesi's (or Scarlati's, or...). There is no coincidence in the fact that many classically trained musicians end up playing metal, and many opera and vocal coaches react to contemporary gems in the countless metal subgenres. As for the Stabat Mater Dolorosa from Pergolesi, all the people I know personally to appreciate the composition, are keen metal aficionados. In the Epica video, just watch the public's facial expressions illustrating the above... Thank you for your lovely reactions!

These two are clearing my head from it's whirlwind of thoughts: Time is interrupted; time must wait until this is over to resume. Amazing how well they connected with each other, how well they climbed the ladder of the piece's dramatic emotions. Floor, Simone and the music are all one being... The Symphonic Metal genre has become a persistent and enduring one because it's artists obey no border, they do not fear exploring any musical frontier...

Loved the reaction! It's indeed very refreshing to see metal fans appretiate good music even beyond the genre Some fun facts *This is the same show as the other song you reacted to (Sancta Terra), and it was prior to that, near the beginning of this massive 3-hour concert. Floor then returned near the end for Sancta Terra. *This is not the only classical music reference in the show, there's a duet between a violinist from the orchestra and Epica's lead guitarist Isaac of 'Presto' one of the movements of Vivaldi's Summer. Not vocals there but it's another gem. *Epica initially wanted Tarja Turunen (the first singer of Nightwish, who is also clasically trained and big influence for Simone) to be guest here. Sadly she couldn't come but luckily we got the other big voice of NW instead (sorry Annette) *You might know this already but it's always good to remember that Simone was 3-month pregnant in this show. Her performance was really impressive.

Thank you Christi. I have the same thoughts as you as regards opening the ears of people to genres that they would otherwise dismiss or be afraid to explore. I am also a classically trained musician who has always sought out the new music regardless of genre. To me, it's like finding treasures that have been hidden in plain sight. As for the performance - both singers show us their mastery of the fundaments of singing. Their intonation and blending is perfect. Especially in the chained suspensions that pierce the heart to paint, in music, Simeon's prophecy for Mary.

Great reaction It's funny because the Dutch actually put classical music in everything , they even did it in a Qmusic ( hardstyle ) performance with Sefa which you should watch to open your mind even more ! 60 thousand people listening to hardstyle house music based on classical music and live played instruments and choir is actually fun to watch People have moods and for every mood theirs music that fits that mood .

I have listened to this video for several times now. I like it a lot. Till now the version of Christopher Hogwood (Emma Kirkby and James Bowman) was my favorite. But Simone and Floor did so well, they are at the top of my list. Wonderful!! I am so glad you did this version, thank you! I love your reactions to (classical) music, you are an expert!

Hi, just using this as a messenger... yes this performance is stunning; but i implore you to hear Diana Ankudinova's cover of "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You"... a new dimension of awesome, even for her! Love your work :)

I was just watching Julia Lezhneva and Philippe Jaroussky singing this prior to watching your reaction which came up as recommended! As you pointed out the differences in the singers as with the two I aforementioned one being a counter-tenor and the other soprano!! It does not matter what type of vocalist sings this it is a wonderful piece!! For me I was brought up on classical before I was well ensconced into Metal!! There is an argument that Baroque and metal have similarities in music but still it is up for debate!! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction 🙂

Quite honestly, there are a lot of heavy metal fans that listen to and enjoy classical and cinematic music. So I'm somewhat irritated by the comments on musical education 😠. Typical stereotype that metal heads are wild and uncultured! Musical education is more needed for people listening pop, rap and country, as far as I observe this!

First Imagine the composers of the era this was written and bring them to the present what their reaction might be. What music they might have composed now. Second imagine given the talented artist we have today what music might be composed and sung tomorrow.

Don't know if you're aware of it or not, but in their younger days they were roommates. I guess that's why they're so comfortable with each other.

No they were never roommates, it’s a false rumor. Stop saying it and get well informed.

Hey Christi - another detail you may not be aware of, is that Simone was 3 month pregnant at the time of the concert - still she pulled it off for over 3 hours at this concert.

As much as I like this piece there is one piece by Allegri that tops them all and that is ' Miserere Mei, Deus'. This totally transports me above and beyond! I had a classical grounding when I grew up and became fond of all things Baroque! In saying that my discovery of Metal drove me down that rabbit hole never to return. I have had the thinking between the two genres even though they are centuries apart there are many similarities in the basics of their music. Some may find this fanciful but I know many classical trained musicians that tend to agree, food for thought!!
