⚙️ EPISODE #221: It’s true, the most beautifully figured woods are usually the most difficult to work with. Their swirling grains, mesmerizing and glorious, create lots of challenges. And in the veneer form, they can turn into impossible “potato chips!” But fear not, there is a way to tame even the wildest veneers. In this episode I show you my methods and see if we can transform the beast into its true beauty. (Closed captions)

Tom, your discussions about how a design comes together are always interesting, educational and most important they emphasize the importance of “form” blending with “function”. My wife was looking over my shoulder as you presented “The Lilly Pad Table”. Maria is VERY hard to impress and she wants one. For sure “Epic” is an appropriate description of your woodworking. Thank You!

I remember watching that whole series on the lily pad table. It was so engaging and interesting to see the creative process in play based on the factors such as size of the veneer pieces. For anyone interested in creativity in woodworking and how it sort of takes shape, that series is really helpful and inspiring in that way.

Dear Sir, In my experience, I now change paper every 2 hours, at least 4 times in the same day, because the humidity of the softener left with the first paper will wrinkle the veneer and there is no way we can have a flat glueing.

Try using glycerin and water mixed to flatten veneers. Re cupping, try clamping wood piece to a torsion box, then jointing it, then re-sawing it down with a bandsaw to get your veneers. I've done 16" tall pieces by 8' long, and it works well.

Thank you for your videos. I have some curly maple and some other veneers that would make you sea sick with all the wave in them.

I said, there are certain types who need a tag on their ankle so the radio can give away their coordinates to people looking for a toilet. Can complain about the mountain of school educational literature, constantly pimping what looks like items from an insane asylum with covert metatagging, but schizophrenia doesn’t bode well for the covert does it. If looking like a prolonged abomination seems acceptable, some of the teachers could still think they’d be entitled to a job in New England. From personal experience, both teachers and young men with pouches cut infront of me to get on the train.
