Epidural Hematoma (Epidural hemorrhage): Etiology, Clinical features, Diagnosis and Treatment
Epidural hematoma occurs as a result of head trauma and subsequent acute hemorrhage, primarily from the middle meningeal artery between the skull and the dura mater. Typical symptoms are due to compression of the brain and appear after a lucid interval that follows an initial loss of consciousness. Increased intracranial pressure leads to a decline in mental status and anisocoria, in which the ipsilateral pupil is dilated. Diagnosis is confirmed by CT (biconvex, hyperdense, sharply demarcated mass). Emergency treatment is necessary and involves the neurosurgical opening of the skull and hematoma evacuation.

Thank you for this video. I felt like I went back to my nursing school. I’m far away here in the US and my mom in the Philippines was recently dx with with Stroke with right sided weakness. CT scan showed “Epidural hematoma “ I was asking my brother if she have fallen or hit her head accidentally. He told me he don’t know anything. I’m wondering if she had fallen and didn’t told anybody. Or could be just like you said “non traumatic.” Or is it “hemorrhagic stroke?” It’s hard to communicate with the Doctor who dx her first with a stroke because she does have suddenly have right sided weakness. Or it’s because the hematoma is pressing the nerve. We need to see a neurologist ASAP to not further her clinical sx. We want a fast dx and management so she recover soon. But she’s 79 years old turning 80 years old. Has atherosclerosis bilateral carotid arteries.
