yes, this is strue but Pedals are very important as well.. I personally know some guys who own mexican strats, cheap Jacskon Dinkies and the Epiphones Standard LPs and play in local Bands and some do solo work and when they are playing gigs or small live concerts trough "real deal" borrowed / rented Marshall AMPs and with Multieffect processor or trough few good pedals the Guitars sound like they are real 10000 €/$ Gibsons or some other expensive Guitars ... You would never tought they are fkn sub 2000€/$ heck they are even sub 1000$ Guitars...

Dude I could watch you riff all day! Killer playing man! Thank you for the comparison! That was a very welcome surprise! The Gibson had some more bite and that could be due to electronics but damn the Epiphone still got you in that ball park! Great demo man!

Epiphone is knocking it out of the park with some amazing products at affordable prices compared to the parent company Gibson. I just received my Wino and it’s fit and finish is great, and the sound is awesome!!!!

I've had mine for 2 months and have only swapped the kidney bean tuner ends for Grover gold keystones, looks so much better imo. Also put Gibson 498t/490r pups in it, and I would put it up against my Gibson lp standard all day long. It's a hell of an instrument, period.

Awesome playing, I love the guitar and I'm very glad you think so as well. Mine came ready to play with great fret work and a proper nut, I just had to adjust the truss rod a little bit giving it a little more relief and lowered the bridge a little bit. I have had Gibson customs as well, and they do have a little bit deeper/fuller tone with a nice growl to them, probably because of the extra weight and little bit thicker Medium C neck. But at the end of the day, the Epiphone to me stacks right up there with playability and feel for sure and the new 98T Pro pickup is a nice new addition for Epiphone. Jerry and Epiphone knocked it out of the park with this guitar, thank you for some excellent playing and a great pick for riffs that show off what the guitar can do.

Dropping in from a different time zone here, I also have a black LP Custom 1968 that I bought from a friend in 1974. It's still great and I wouldn't touch anything on it but I've been thinking about trying some Monty's Underspun Humbuckers and figured an Epi Custom might do the trick so deciding between the Jerry Cantrell and Epi Custom (which has a full mahogany body, no cap). Your demo / comparison here has helped tip the balance and the clean chordal stuff really helped - if the Epi pick-ups sound that good clean then the Monty's should take it to another level! Thanks for taking the time!

I was once in a position where I could buy a great MIJ LP, I was torn between a sunburst Tokai and a Wine Red Orville by Gibson. I ended up getting the Tokai, and while it is a LOVELY guitar and a great LP in every way, this video does make me wish I picked the other. Nothing like a wine red LPC. Goddamn.

Great review! I bought one of these within an hour if picking it up at a local GC. Tried the Prophecy model, which was really cool; I probably will get one too; but the Wino surprised me. Stayed in tune and the pickups aren’t terrible! It is a good feeling/sounding guitar, amazing bang for the buck, and although not a Gibson, doesn’t feel cheap. It sounds great through a SLO30, the Bogner/Diezel mini’s, DSL, and it’s perfect through a JJ Jr. now I just gotta get the Powerbridge and chip installed, may not even upgrade the pickups for now! Also, that Opeth riffing through the Matchless 👌🤘

For me, when you a/b'd the two guitars, the Custom just had this polish to it that the Epiphone lacked. Had you not compared them, I wouldn't have even cared!!! Great job on the video as usual. And I think this will help sell a few of those Epiphone models.

Definitely the Gibby pickups. I own this badass guitar and the only mods I've done to it are pups and got gold Grover keystone tuner tips. I just think the keystones look the best. I'd put my Epi JC wino up against my Gibson lp standard all day long.

I bought the same epiphone JJ wino after watching your video. It was a good guitar with few cosmetic issues. I found unpolished switch knob, dented neck binding. Maybe I will change mine with a bone nut. I even sold my second-handed PRS McCarty 594. It was because I wished to get a “Friedman JJ 100” in the future. As always amps matters ! Hope to see a demo of JJ 100 in this channel ! 🎉

I did end up picking up a really nice Gibson Exclusive Les Paul Classic, in Olive Drab, and it came almost perfectly set up. When I switch back and forth between my Gibson Les Paul Classic and this Epiphone Jerry Cantrel 'Wino' LP Custom, I do know what you're saying about the Gibson feeling just a bit more substantial. There is really only a slight difference in the feel really, but it is there, and you just can't deny that it is there. This Epiphone LP Custom is no slouch though as Zach says, the neck feels great, and it screams quality in all areas, definitely one of Epiphone's best creations.

I recently purchased one. It came to me with ground wire issues. The ground wire to the bridge was not installed correctly. After sending it back and getting it back still not right I ended up fixing it myself. If it were any other guitar I would have just returned it and got my money back or got somthing else. But I absolutely love everything about this guitar. I just had to have it and really wanted it fixed and working correctly. So glad I put in the effort It's absolutely my favourite guitar to play in my collection.

@@ronyeahright9536 hey Ron! So, funny story, two days after I wrote this something happened, one of those once in a lifetime deals. I was checking the used market site here in Portugal (kinda like Craig's List) and a Gibson Les Paul Custom white popped up. The price was unreal, I had to check it out. So I contacted the seller, it was this girl, she was selling her dad's guitar. I was a bit suspicious, so I asked if, you know, her dad knew she was selling it, I didn't want any problems, etc. She said it was all legit. So her mother was the one that actually brought the guitar to make the deal. So yeah, instead of buying the Epi, I bought the used Gibson, and I'm really happy, the guitar has seen some action for sure, it's from 2012, some cool real relicing, the hardware is in a bit of bad shape, the guitar was kept inside the case in a very damp basement, a lot of humidity, but I can buy new Gibson hardware, if it starts to bug me. So, long story short, I didn't buy the Epi. Cheers!

I like this approach as you definitely have a unique starting point w/lots of high end gear to work with and the LP Custom itself. Most reviews just don’t have that perspective to draw from. I’d agree that the actual feel of the Gibson is irreplaceable but the cost difference can very easily justify the addition of this guitar especially if you’re like me and already own a Gibson LP.

Facts bro, I have the Wino and it's an AMAZING guitar for any price range. It's not stock, but also not modded out so much it's not even close to the same. All I did was put in Gibson 498t/490r pups, Orange Drop caps and swapped out the tuner ends for the keystone style from Grover. And because the guitar is already awesome with the CTS electronics it doesn't cost an ATM and a leg to get this badboy sounding just as good as a new Gibson it's a no brainer. I put it up against my Gibson Lp standard all day long and I've gigged it out and people always comment about how good the sound is and can't believe it's coming from an Epi. Just goes to show if you start with a good guitar with most of the pieces already there, it doesn't take much to bring it up to premium level sound quality.

Woh! You're getting all the tone and feel through that rig that I get with my 2010 Wine Red Custom, only you're on an Epiphone and your playing is better! I'm trying to convince my friend to by the Epi Wino as he loves my Gibson (I play it through a JJ JR 2x12 stack).

Blindtested and played unplugged, this Wino was as good as my FGN LC20 - thought I played my fgn. Epiphone is on a great spot now.

Great playing man! AIC is still one of my fave bands….William Stovall is doing a phenomenal job. I once owned a ‘92 wine red Les Paul Custom from Gibson. Paid 3K for it. Sold it 4 months later..it weighed almost 12lbs and it was just too heavy! Looking at this model to see if it’s a better fit for me.

I just traded an epi Les Paul standard for this guitar and I’m glad I did. For an Epiphone, it plays very nicely. This guitar is weight relieved too, so that’s a nice touch. I think I might still put in a SD JB in the bridge but I’m in love with this guitar

Excellent review and comparison. You really showed the full potential of the guitar, while also making clear the differences between the Epi and the Gibson. The Epi sounded really good, but I could definitely hear that it sounded a little darker or "muffled" compared to the Gibson, and like you said the Gibson is more punchy and complex sounding, and I definitely heard that. From what I'd read, the Epi has 9 weight relief holes in it, which could account for the less substantial feel... I wonder what it would have felt/sounded like had they kept it completely solid. I have a 2001 Gibson LP Standard, and it feels heavy like the core of the earth, and I really feel it makes a difference with the sound. I still kick myself for not picking up a Gibson LP custom back in the late 90s, early 2000s, as they seemed really expensive at the time, but nothing compared to what they are today. I also like that Epi went back to their older headstock design... I used to have an Epi back in the mid 90s, and the thing that bothered me the most was the headstock design as it always felt like "almost a Gibson, but they want to make it a point that it's not", so this is a vast improvement. I wanted to ask, what pickups are in the Gibson? I'd be curious how close you could get the Epi if you switched out the pickups for the same pickups as the Gibson.

well the guitars have totally different pickups, also Gibson LPs have had weight relief for some time. Not really a good comparison if it's not the same exact electronics and pickup height.

Thanks so much! The Gibson has the stock 490R/498T pickups. They're both great guitars and it's really splitting hairs at a certain point. Definitely agree about the headstock comment you made about wanting to make a point that it's not a Gibson. The new one looks great in my opinion. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@ZachWish Ok thanks for clarifying the pickups, those are the same as in my Gibson. I do still prefer the Gibson headstock to the new Epi, I don't know if it's just what I'm used to or if it's that the Gibson looks more balanced with the open book design being wider at the top, but yeah, the new Epi headstock is so much better. I mean, Gibson owns Epi, so I don't know what they won't just go all the way and do the same headstock, cause it's not like anyone is going to mistake it for a Gibson with the Epi name plastered on the top. Anyway, it's just one of those nuances that I obsess over.

The Gibson sounded brighter and more complex for sure, but, to me that is why I prefer epiphone. All of those harmonics and high end become an issue once you get into higher gain tones. I find that keeping it simple lends to a more intonated and focused tone and performance from me. I bet the gibson sounds great into a cleaner setup.

I think that's true when you hear this in solo guitar tracks, but I think the benefit of the Gibson having more pronounced highs and mids is it will cut through the mix better in a full band situation.

Pickups switched between Gibson and Epiphone would be sweet to hear. See if the Gibson punch would carry on to the Epiphone and vice versa. Be interesting for sure..

I feel like the Gibson has a more open sound and the Epiphone is slightly muddier with a bit more low mids. Of course both are great, and the Epiphone is a very good axe for the money.
