These were released nearly a year ago, I bought a black one from Sweetwater (limited to 150 in black). It’s a great guitar that I’m glad I bought, I enjoy playing it as much as my Gibson semi hollows. Very chunky neck and they are heavy (typical for 355’s), mine’s just a shade under 10 pounds but it feels very balanced, the weight feels equally distributed unlike heavy Les Pauls which can really feel very body heavy. Love the ebony fretboard and the ‘57 Classics sound great, nice build quality too. It’s a nice package (great case too) for the price, def. recommend.

I've been a fan of Ellegarden since the mid-2000s. I desperately wanted the Gibson version a few years back but when I finally had the money for it, the last one in the EU (in a shop in Denmark St) had its neck warped. Coincidentally we're putting on an Ellegarden tribute night in London at the end of July so I'm glad Ubukata san is finally getting more recognition around the world!

Positions 4, 5 and 6 are very useful in high gain situations where a low cut removes the mud. Also useful in a mix where a specific frequency needs to cut through. :)

Also, to probably compensate for the amps of the era, too! Especially, if a particular amp was a bit muddy or less defined, compared to modern amps.

Position 6 reminds me of the crackly lofi intro on Wish You Were Here. I could see it coming in handy for creating calm ambient background tracks on a looper and playing lead over them.

I owe one of these, an Olive Drab, and play it nearly every day. Worth every penny. I come from a metal and blues background. This thing is the Blues. Think B. B. King. But then it handles heavy gain just fine if you want to push it. Tone for days. Two things: First the Varitone is... for certain things. I wouldn't focus on it nor judge this or any guitar by it. I just feel like you'll miss it if it was gone. Think of it as a bonus from old days. Second the weight. This is the heavist guitar I own. It's heavier than my explorers and this thing is semi-hollow! Buy a nice padded strap for it. I can not see any reason I'd ever get rid of this guitar. It forces me to play differently and explore and just sounds amazing. Not 100%, but I believe Dave Ghrol's is based on this and he has in the past played a Gibson verson of Shinishi's guitar. Now those are rare.

Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely tempted to get one of these but I'm not sure if the weight is going to be for me. Also, as boykeschaafsma1117 mentioned, Grohl has a Trini Lopez, then had several custom "DG-335"s made for him by Gibson that are based on the Trini.

Been eyeing these for a while now. It’s a better “deal” than the DG since it’s got a few nice features like a prettier fingerboard and the bigsby trem etc. Thanks for doing a demo guys!

I love the olive drab green one. And yes, it does remind me of Chris Cornell as well. And I’ve always wanted to have that guitar, but I believe it was a limited edition Gibson for an amount of money with which you could buy a Gibson 335, a Les Paul Standard, an SG Special and a couple of really great pedals. It has always been my dream to have an olive drab green ES-335 even before Chris Cornell got his (I swear, not kidding!). Now…. I have a BEAUTIFUL black Gibson ES-347. No idea why Gibson never reissued that model, because it’s one of the most versatile 335-ish guitars. I bought it brand new in 1987 (I think) and as much as I would love to, I don’t think I could ever afford another guitar like it. Yet that’s exactly what I want! I want a guitar to not just function as a backup guitar, but it needs to add something as well. Something my ES-347 can’t do, mostly because I don’t want to change anything about that guitar, because it’s absolutely perfect the way it is. So to have a similar guitar in another beautiful colour, with a Bigsby and a Varitone switch (because I actually do like the sounds that you can get with a Varitone switch A LOT! - and indeed, some settings are less desirable than others)…, this almost seems like a no brainer. HOWEVER, this guitar isn’t cheap and the first thing I would want to do is to make sure that the Bigsby stays in tune as good as possible, which means that I would need to buy a good functioning roller bridge that fits (which is not always the case). I might even want to swap out the whole Bigsby thing for something a little more stable. The second thing I would want to do is to change the pickups for completely different pickups. This would either be a combination of a TV Jones Paul Yandell Duo-Tron in the bridge and a TV-Jones T-Armond in the neck position. You can get humbucker sized pickup rings to fit a regular sized Filterton, or something similar like the Duo-Tron. I’m not sure about the T-Armond though. Anyway, it would be either that or two great sounding P90’s (you can get humbucker sized pickup rings for P90’s as well, but they’re harder to find). I’m not sure about the nut on this guitar, but if it isn’t made of bone, I would want that to be replaced. I would also like locking tuners for no other reason but the fact that I find them convenient. I hate restringing a guitar with ‘normal’ tuners, with the exception of Fender style slotted tuners. And with these different pickups I have no idea what the effect of the Varitone will be (probably relatively similar). Add to this the fact that despite me not wanting to be a snob, I still find it slightly annoying that the headstock reads ‘Epiphone’ instead of Gibson. I hate myself for it, but I can’t help myself. Anyway, even if I man myself up and be cool with the brand name, it would still cost me a shitload of money to mod this guitar into something I would actually play with a big grin on my face. I know, ridiculous story. I have quite a few alternatives already. I don’t really need another guitar. I’ve got plenty of them. Thing is…, somewhere deep in my heart, I want to be that guy who has two good guitars and feel completely fine with it. For a while I had about 9 or 10 great electric guitars, but for various reasons there were only two that were still unbelievably good and stable: my ES-347 and a heavily modified Fender American Standard Telecaster. I never swap guitars during a gig, so one of them was always the backup for the other (I MUST have a backup for everything). Sometimes the 347 was my main guitar and sometimes the Tele was my main guitar. And I was perfectly happy! Then I bought another Telecaster and I built yet another, I got a fair number of my other guitars into a good working state and all of a sudden I felt lost. I had no idea what guitars to bring to the gig. I am physically disabled and I have to rely on others to carry my stuff for me. I can’t ask them to carry more than two guitars (and the rest). I felt so much more at ease when I could only use just these two guitars… Hence my interest for this guitar. For the two people that actually read this, I know what you want to ask. Yes, I could easily sell a bunch of guitars, buy a Gibson 335 and mod it precisely like I want it. And it did cross my mind so many times. But I just can’t do it. These guitars are all so precious to me. I already sold quite a few, but then I see a guitar I wanted for all my life. And there I go again. I’m sorry for the long story. I truly am. Guitar addict. 🤤

The purpose is that all tones are just different shades to "paint" with. I would use position 6 to get that "distant" feel for an opening to any song. Plus running into a Big Muff the different roll offs could give you many different flavors. IDK it really is a case by case application.

You guys should really dive into the Japanese music scene then. Expand your musical world, so to speak. The Japanese sometimes have a different tonal form than western music so the different tones for the switch location could very well serve a purpose specific to the Japanese sound. They're putting out great music and some of the best musicians in the world. A whole spectrum of sound and ideas, you'll find something you like I promise. And stuff you'll hate, to be fair, but that's music in general and not specific to Japan haha

The singer is world class. For something more metal and uniquely Japanese, you can't go wrong with Maximum the Hormone. One of my personal Japanese favs. For softer, more jazzy/bluesy stuff, the OGs in Japan is Creation.

My side of the story is that there's no Gibson version of this model you can buy new (mind the f holes) . To get the Gibson version of this guitar (355 + bigsby) you can go Custom Shop ($7k at least), the DG model or get the Murphy Lab limited edition Noel Gallagher +$12k. Else you can go to the vintage market and we know where that will take you. I'm glad I can aim to own one of these without selling one of my kidneys.

The costs for production and parts and generally keeping the lights on has probably tripled or gone past that at this point compared to like 2 years ago. And thats no fault of Gibson, Epiphone or any company. They are using the same or even better parts than before. A lot of them have Gibson parts. They were not cheap before. Theres no way you can produce these kinds of guitars for well under 1000 these days. You wouldnt even have been able to really do that before Covid, Ukraine, Brexit etc

Where its made says nothing about the quality or the parts these days. Its just the labour being cheaper. The parts are still expensive as hell since prices for them have only shot up in the last couple years. Tbh the parts are near what they are worth now. They were too cheap before. Thats why like 400£ guitars with similar parts could happen. But it was obvious that this couldnt last forever. Save up and spend a bit more and you are going to be happy. I dont see how there will ever be actually decent below 300-400£ anymore. Way more with these kinds of parts. Its just not doable anymore. You got to keep the lights on as well. Its not just the production costs that have probably tripled or are even past that point now.

For those who a drawn to a 335 because of the hype…. Don’t believe it. Go try for yourself. I had a 335 and sold it after a year having only played for less than 10 hours. It’s not for everyone. I much prefer a casino.

Epiphone is a joke now- they were a good guitar for the money- now they're just Epiphone.

Why? News flash for you, they've never stopped making those same affordable guitars. Why are you triggered by them trying to expand their customer base by offering something more for those who can afford it?

A lot of "opinion" - and nothing to back it up. If aren't able to formulate a single point, keep it to yourself. You make yourself look like an sad old fool with lots of complains but noone to talk to.

news flash, iphones are made in china, PCs are made in china, hell, most of your stuff is made in china... there are good craftsmen and bad ones, doesn't matter if they're Chinese people in Epiphone or Apple or Mexicans in a US Fender factory ;)

Bought one - hated it. Well made, but heavy AF. Pickups are meh, and the variatone has 2 usable options Couldn’t wait to sell it. Nice thing about buying used … no money lost
