Wrong, wrong, wrong. It had nothing to do with glare on television....that explanation was made up years later. Nobody playing on television would use a student guitar, nor was there ever a white Gibson causing that issue for them to see the need to 'fix' it. The truth is that television sets in the early 1950s in America came in wood cabinets with limed finish, ie, yellowish white. That's what TV yellow refers to.

Small point of criticism on the blindfod testing: Pete has to assess them AFTER he already played them. It's is rather a test of recognition than one of judgment. IMHO blindfold testing should judge quality, playability, sound etc. without knowing the brand, it should not be about guessing the right brand.
@startrekmike
@startrekmike 4 жыл бұрын
This has always been my issue as well. It has become very popular on youtube to do blind tests like this but the whole "guessing game" thing makes the whole thing kinda meaningless. Heck, I would even argue that in the case of guitars, doing these blind test videos only really serves to further galvanize the subset of viewers that are obsessed with the "cheap versus expensive" debate and not much else. The problem really comes down to the specific subject matter. If they were talking about cars, they easy highlight the often very visible signs of quality (or lack of). Likewise, they could use established technical terms to help us understand the comparisons in performance and mechanical precision. With guitars, a video can only really tell you how something looks from a distance (as these videos are almost always filmed in such a way that seeing the guitars up close is impossible) and how it sounds when running through a specific rig. We can't really get the most valuable information (how it feels to play and how it all looks under careful, up-close examination) and thus can't really meaningfully compare them. To be bluntly honest, I really do think that these videos are kinda (if unintentionally so) clickbait. The "blind test" is a popular, emotionally cathartic format that allows those who favor (by choice, personal principles, or by the realities of their budget) entry/mid-priced guitars to adopt a "just as good!" mentality (that is further fueled by youtube guitar pundits/conspiracy theorists) while also allowing those who favor the more expensive models to argue that their preferred price-point was clearly superior. The "blind test" video just ends up being a tool for a debate that only barely matters in reality and only really has any footing on the internet (where extreme hyperbole is standard procedure during conversation/debate). It would be more useful to just do videos that carefully explain the guitars individually. That way, we get more meaningful information without attracting the angry/aggressive "cheap guitars suck!" or "expensive guitars are a scam!" crowds.
@fritsvanzanten3573
@fritsvanzanten3573 4 жыл бұрын
@@startrekmike I do think they can be useful, but the focus is wrong. The matter should be "How does an expert and experienced player (like Rob, Pete, Lee) judge guitars not knowing their brand?" What do they prefer, can they hear a difference? This is important these days of online shopping. For customers this is relevant (since they can't judge themselves at home); are they paying for quality, or for the name? Or, more often, how much is the difference? So it's about judging the guitars. However, in practice the expert players will try to do well, but it's not them that are judged. They are the standard to which the guitars are tested. That's the misunderstanding. Stupid people might think 'Pete failed, he can't distiguish an expensive Gibson from a cheap Epi', but those guys will buy Gibsons in the end, they buy and play names, no loss for Andertons. The blindfolding is meant not to be influenced by brand name, status and reputation, judge them on the guitar 'pur', as the Germans say. We at home can judge the sound, to some extent, but not the feel, the chunkiness, the frets, the playability, the weight, the neck dive, the finish etc. Eyesight in human dominates the other senses, not to name the name, again, but blindfolding gives the other senses (including smell (vanilla!)) a more equal chance. It levels the playing field, it's not meant to obstruct the expert, for entertainments sake. Blinfolded the expert becomes our ears, our fingers, even our air-pressure detecting organs (as is often testified, like in this video). Blindfolding gives us more online guitar for our online money. Meaning more satisfied customers. That otherwise have to buy blindly. In good faith ("Well, it looked nice, and X is a good brand").
@penkunator
@penkunator 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. The best challenges are like either the style with 5-10 guitars of one shape from different brands (like Lee did with single cuts and strats) or the style with several guitars of same shape from one brand but different price points (like Rob on ESP/LTD Eclipse shape (the old video, not the recent Fishman/EMG/SD one)).
@startrekmike
@startrekmike 4 жыл бұрын
@@fritsvanzanten3573 I honestly think these "blindfold tests" actually put more emphasis on the name on the headstock even if it is unintentional. They help support the adversarial attitude that a certain subset of the audience DESPERATELY cling to in order to feel that their particular choice in brand (one way or the other) is somehow "valid". Even if the person doing the test on the video guesses right and even if they indicate that there were differences in sound and feel, that person who really NEEDS to be validated one way or the other will say that they heard what they needed to hear to support their position and will use that personal result as way to attack those who buy the guitar in the "rival" price point. It is silly, it doesn't make sense, but it is pretty much standard issue behavior online (sadly). I do think there is one small issue in your argument. It kinda only works on the assumption that everyone buys a guitar without first trying it out themselves. That these are the only way a potential customer can experience these guitars before hitting the "buy" button and typing in their shipping details. Obviously some are going to do this (and at their own risk with any brand and model) but even then, Gibson and (especially) Epiphone are generally common in larger guitar shops so if one really wants to try before they buy and be a informed customer, they can do so without relying on a video. The big issue I have with these videos is not unlike a issue I might have with doing a blind test of something like a single malt whiskey versus a blended whiskey. For some, the difference will be there but they won't have the context needed to fully articulate it. For others, they already know what specific elements to look for and will immediately know the difference and make the correct determination every time. To bring this back to guitars. We all have our favorite brands that we have a lot of familiarity with. If you were to blindfold me and have me play a American Professional Strat and a Squier Stratocaster, I would know what specific parts to feel for to know that difference. Likewise, I would notice the tuning stability difference and even the response of the knobs. It isn't that I have "magic ears" or any nonsense like that. It is just that I have put a lot of time into reading about the Stratocaster and have owned a lot of them and played a lot of them (ranging from Squiers to American models). To me, the differences are obvious even if they don't really make one "better" than the other (since they are all as good as their price points and intended markets allow). At its core, the blindfold test only really tells you (the audience) how a guitar sounds in a specific context but as you pointed out, there are so many other factors that come into play and are important to the overall decision making process. When you really step back and think about it, a video that takes a specific guitar model and examines it carefully (pointing out various technical features, the workmanship factors, and then some sound demonstrations through a couple of different major amp types) ends up being not only more informative but also less prone to promoting a adversarial attitude. Having a couple of videos with one going over all the details of a Gibson Les Paul and one going over the details of a Epiphone Les Paul will tell you a lot more than just having some guy on a video try to guess which is which while wearing a blindfold. If anything, the blindfold concept in itself puts MORE focus on the brand name for us, the audience. It draws our mind towards those brand comparisons because that is the whole idea to begin with. Those who NEED the Epiphone to be "better" will say that is what they hear. Likewise, those that NEED the Gibson to be "better" will do the same. While I know (and fully understand) why Andertons wouldn't do such a thing, I think the most useful videos for comparing guitars in "rival" price-points would be one that follows the person doing the setups of the guitars out of the box. The requirement for a setup in itself isn't a big deal and doesn't say much for against any particular brand/price-point but such a video format would allow a more detailed, less carefully curated view of these guitars up close. It would tell you a bit more about how these guitars leave the factory in regards to fretwork, finish flaws, and other construction related issues/concerns. If enough videos were made, you could even get a idea for the "trends" with certain brands in regards to finish/fretwork/fit and finish of parts. Anything beyond that is really best left to the individual to determine themselves while testing guitars at a guitar shop.

I ended up trying a couple of other P90 guitars, including a couple that were almost twice the price, and kept going back to the Epiphone. I found both pickups had their own character, that they both had incredible warmth, and that the "fat" 50's neck was super comfortable for lead lines, and felt fine for chords as well. I finally got my Epiphone Special! You and Pete convinced me to get it, and I'm glad you did. It's my new favorite thing, more than my Strat, Tele, vintage Starfire etc. Now I wondering if I need an SG! But seriously, it's a great guitar. For my purposes it's a great addition to my solid body guitars.

Danish Pete was right. Posh Defined: Port Out, Starboard Home denoting the cooler side of ships traveling from England to India and back again in the 1800s.

The word was in use as early as 1910, but the story of port out, starboard home wasn't around until the 1930s. They either adapted an already-common word as a mnemonic, or the story was adapted from the word.

Awesome videos. Awesome guitars. The Epiphone TV special is the clear winner just on price point. Those 90s sound good. It’s a bonus that Epiphone has control of their facility in China. Pete is one of my favorite guitarists and I think the Captain performs at his top game with Pete. I absolutely love the jam session at the end of the Gibson vs Epiphone SG standard video.

The new 2020 Epiphones came out last month here (nz) and I picked up the special the day after it landed. It’s amazing. Ok it has some of the usual Epiphone problems (nut, wavy paint along neck binding and one high fret) but for the price is sooo worth it!

Another great video from Cap & Pete. I watched this video way back and just watched it again because I’m still trying to decide on a P90 guitar. I really like the sound and price tag of the Epi LP Special but I also love the Jazzmaster P90 sound. As far as comparison videos go, i think these these guys are great guitar players and very entertaining, but a true comparison would have to first include a proper setup with new strings (exact same setup specs by the same tech). The strings, intonation, pickup height, etc., are variables that have to be eliminated in order to make a comparison worthwhile. Most of us probably know that a proper setup can be the difference between a keeper and firewood. The first “professional” setup on my Epi ES335 was very underwhelming and just sat in the corner collecting dust for a year because the sound of it didn’t impress me. Before selling it, I figured I would give it another chance and have it setup by a different guy. It was like he had a magic wand, this has been my go-to guitar for 5 years now. I wonder how different this comparison would be if all 4 guitars were setup exactly the same. For all we know, the Epi jr had low volume due to pickup height? Or maybe the Gibson Special sounded equal to the Epi Special only because the Gibson had a poor setup…I don’t really want to believe this scenario, but it is possible.

@@ChristianDiasMusic Lee from Sonic Youth has several of his Jazzmasters that he installed 70s wide-range humbuckers into and called them Jazzblasters. Putting JM-90 replacement pickups in a Jazzmaster sounds like a fun idea too. But definitely correct, JM pickups are not P90s.
