2017 PCT snow pack mimics the conditions from 2005. You'll get water in places where other years the trail is dry. Hike your hike and the year you get is the year you get.

I grew up in this neck of the woods. It's been too many decades since I've been home & I can still feel the granite crunching beneath my feet and smell the sage, the scrub oaks & the manzanita.

Out there, I fell in love with how efficient our bodies really are. A little shade, and some water, and it cools off. I mean heat is still hot, but it is amazing how effect we are at cooling! Boy the desert is stunning!

I had planned to hike the AT this year and had to unexpectedly pay for a funeral. Which sort of was a blessing in a disguise because a couple weeks later the hardware and my leg came loose and I am getting surgery in a week to get it removed. I'll be out there in a year or two. But for now I will vicariously live through you. Safe travels Dixie.

Good to see you finally got started on the PCT! BTW, there are horses on the AT. Trail maintenance volunteers use them to pack materials in for shelter building and repair.

The snow pack wouldn't worry me as much as the river crossings. Ice cold water moving really fast and in high volumes.

Mickey Xtian They're both going to be a problem this season, especially high passes and the north facing slopes beyond. Pre-dawn starts seem to make sense, but then you've got serious ice to worry about as well on the slopes so ... 'challenging' doesn't even begin to describe it. Be safe, and have fun.

I'm so excited to see your new adventure begin. Over this winter I've caught up on all your AT videos and you have truly inspired me. While I would someday love to attempt the AT - I plan to start with more local hiking/backpacking in my homestate of MN (on the Superior Hiking Trail and parts of the North Country Trail). I must also add that the video is awesome, I love the details you are capturing and your editorial person does an amazing job!! Best wishes on this grand adventure of a lifetime!
