I was thinking about shooting an IDPA match until I saw this video. Thank you.

I'm glad there's no rules on the streets. Kill or be killed. That's pretty much it.

Rick, you should have been an attorney! You provide very good arguments.

Good episode Rick. As a new (the newest?) IDPA member, I am now tasked with learning the rules in this sport. I have already begun reading the IDPA section of Brian Enos Forum and going back to previous episodes of PFS to learn more about IDPA. The rule book is a lot less precise than USPSA, which is what kept me away for so long. Not understanding how the rules would be applied consistently was a turn off to me in the past. Since shooting my first match, I'm hooked! --Larry

Rick addressed this in the episode. You can stencil a gun on the target to indicate that it is a threat, but not to indicate priority. If the targets are shot from cover, this target should be the first "slice of pie". If the shooter is exposed to the targets, it would have to be the closest target, by at least 6 feet, in order to force the shooter to engage it first. Larry-PFS.

Well, I partially had my trivia answer right.. I knew where the answer was, I just didn't take it like you did but how you take it does make sense.. I was expecting to see something that stated the list wasn't all inclusive but that goes to show that even native speakers of English don't really understand it :)

Includes v. Comprises...Ugh, I wish most lawyers understood the language as well as you. You wouldn't believe how often I am asked to alter the word "including" to "including but not limited to" when negotiating a contract. Another great episode!

You "might" drop or point your gun in an unsafe direction any time it's out of the holster, but someone who's practiced their reloads should be able to handle the gun and the clip at the same time. The clip could be removed from the holster during the unload, when the gun is unloaded and in the weak hand anyway. Rick

It could be the only target available from where the target is to be engaged, or, if there are multiple targets visible, it must be at least six feet closer - than other available targets - to the shooting position, if you want it engaged first. I'd set it up so that the rules are followed, rather than set it up the way you want, and dictate something contrary to the rules. Rick

Yep, "proper" is defined. After all the glossary section is entitled "PROPER magazine retention". Following your logic consider this: Say a left handed toothless shooter steps to the ready line :) ... (I guess left handed don't matter) he he .. and they happen to retain a partially empty mag or clip in their mouth. That would be completely legal right ? because no "teeth" are involved in the retention, however I guess that could have been missed during the tech inspection. Merry Christmas guys.

Question about? The AC can get involved if you have some advance notice of what will take place at a given match, but at the range, on match day, the Match Director has ultimate authority. Rick

Rick (my IDPA brother) ... I have to disagree with you on this one. Looking at where you find guidance and reference in the IDPA rule book on this one (the glossary states - "Proper Magazine Retention"). The key word here to consider is "proper". Proper is then further defined as those places "include:" The word "include" is used to specifically detail what is meant by the key word used before hand, which was "proper". Just my 2 points down. Great show. Keep up the thought provoking dialog!

Rick wouldn't you think that at the end of a stage when you show clear and reholster your weapon it would cause some undue and potentally hazardous handling of the gun? You might drop or point your gun in an unsafe direction and thats not good. Couldn't that be a problem with rules even though the gun isn't loaded? Just a thought. Another great video guys. Merry Christmas. This should be the first official greeting as it is 2:00AM here in SC. Peace all Gunnr

I am in charge of designing and running a local match next month. One of the stages I have I have 3 or 4 targets total. But I wanted the first target which has a gun stenciled on it to be shot first. So when I go to set this up I will have to make that target closest? Or can I just state that he should be shot first in the coarse description. I guess I could look this up in the rule book but I'd like your take on it.

OK, "waistband" is on the list; small-of-the-back would be included in that. We did have a guy drop his mag down the front of his shirt, which is certainly a secure place, but almost impossible to retrieve if needed later. Is that improper? I might say so, but again, it's not on the list of places that are not allowed, and it's not a place that is "specially prepared", so even if I don't like it, I'd say it's legal. Rick

Will you be doing an episode to go over the new rules and their implications?
@kimisdaman

Is "proper" defined? I think the problem is that the rules were written for magazines, and so no consideration was given to a clip being held in the strong hand. Even if that weren't the case, why would the holster be any less proper than those places included in the book? It's at least as handy as a pocket for a subsequent reload. It's not like you wear the holster only as a place to put the clip, which could be the equivalent of a "specially designed pocket". Rick

Yeah, probably a five-part episode! Seriously, I hope to do at least one episode about rule changes, when we get the new book. Rick

I'm holding the rule book in front of me; nowhere is "proper" defined. We have a partial list of proper areas where mags may be stowed, but since it not an inclusive list, there's room for any number of additional "proper" places. I know a few guys who put the mag in the small of their back, between their shirt and waistband; it's not on the list of proper places, but there's nothing in the book to indicates it's improper, so it's legal. Actually, I think the rules were written without enough consideration for how they might be exploited for lack of precision. I don't know that a lawyer would help, but maybe an English teacher could help with the new rule book? Rick

Sorry, folks, no more Tactical Sequence in IDPA. All targets are engaged in Tactical Priority, either outside-in around vertical cover, or near-to-far if in the open. No mention of horizontal cover in the 2017 rule book, but fault lines can be utilized to keep an object between the competitor and targets, if desired. Rick
