About the polystyrene: polystyrene gets a bad rap but it's light and can be made strong where it needs to be. Paper packaging wouldn't do it. Packaging is a very technical business. You could use bits of wood and certain kinds of foam rubber, but you're not gaining much. It would probably still have to go to landfill. You're going to have plenty of stuff to put in the bottom of your plant pots!

There's no good solution I guess, but at least wood and paper rot down in landfill. They can now make really strong packaging out of mushrooms!

Reformed sailor, when on the boat I used a two gallon bucket, after using the bucket for a bath I refilled it and washed my clothes. Hang them out to dry! Easy peasy I would love to do the narrow boat except for cold weather. It looks beautiful! Floridian, Gulf of Mexico, missing the boat days.

Good luck with your plants!! We have one little bitty jalepeno plant that didn’t die and two tomato 🌱 seedlings. Probably will put(transplant)outside soon (since, weathers getting warmer!) Have fun doing laundry!😊 that unit seems to work well for a small load!

Thank you Lisa. The little washing machine (Edna) did us proud for three years and was fab. Sadly she has now gone to the great recycling centre in the sky as our new boat has a 'posh' washing machine which has no personality!'

We only wash by hand and then put it on an airer in the shower. We then put it in the lounge overnight. We haven’t yet put it outside to dry but many do. We’re not liveaboards, so do bedding and towels at home.

Yes !!! Does it get any better? Just finished work and sat down with a cup of coffee and I see a new video from Fran and Rich! Perfect, just gonna settle in to watch. Still our favourite KZfaq people for boat club. Just love how natural u both are and you're not trying to'be something' which always comes across as false. Our boat build started this week! Floating Our Boat not too much to tell right now. Baseplate is down and sides have been started. 60ft X 12ft. Mostly fitted, apart from stove and we didn't want it to look too boaty with all the fitted cupboards, wanting a more minimalist fitout so have left quite a few cupboards etc out. We had a blog once well before vlogs were the thing. Search us and you'll find out a bit more about us and it's likely to be revived soon as we'll chronicle the build... Too shy for videos haha ... If you search for "one thing after another narrowboat" in Google, you'll see a bit more about us!

I am also looking forward to following your travels down the Oxford to London as well as the Crick event. (I think Jono's recent vlog said he was heading there too). With the veggies up the front you could have a tiered shelve at the front, that's how we had 6 tiers on the barge then it takes up very little space, they basically self water each other and you have the cover for any cool nights or bad weather.I use to really enjoy in the morning having a cup of coffee up the front and tending to them before we would set off. Fran those washing machines are really common in Asia in the older apartments, they call them bench washers or table washers, some of them are tiny like the size of our kitchen tidy bins,we had a twin tub one in our 4x4 Off Road truck/camper we traveled around Australia and New Zealand in, that l made out of a ex 4x4 Country Fire Authority fire truck, l brought at their surplus auction. In Asia they put them on the kitchen bench and use them (that's where we first seen them), a lot of their places actually have a mini electric hot water heater and taps up on the wall above the kitchen bench for them and it all drains into the kitchen sink. They definitely have to be higher to gravity drain but it doesn't have to be much, in the truck camper l knocked up a bit of a light pallet type set up and made it to fit sat in the shower recess, then you can fill and drain all in a water proof setting, add some corner edging to stop the unit moving and your set . Really lovely video again that was some lovely footage behind your big noggin Rich as you were going along,l hope you took time to take it all in,sort of a beauty and the beast moment really LMAO ;). We laughed at the dogs having a wrestle in the background at the lock, they must be loving being with you all day and being able to hop off for a explore of new good snifff's as you go ;)Happy Cruis'n,Give the dogs a pat from us ;)

The Stratford has to be one of the most beautiful stretches on the network especially when the sun shines - I think that lift bridge was the same one where ‘cruising the cut’ also squashed his horn so I’m guessing that the boatyard around the corner does a great trade in new horns. The 19th was my birthday and I must have drove past you twice that evening as we headed out for a meal in Tanworth in Arden - good luck with the floating allotment, I planted my cherry toms this evening so I know there’s nothing better than growing a bit of your own.

The saying 'Ne're cast a clout ere May is out' refers to the May tree - or hawthorne bush, if you prefer. The saying dates to before the Gregorian calendar. The May blossom used to come out on or about the 1st May, which under the modern calendar is about 12th May. So Fran was holding to the saying.

Soak when you spot some unwanted pallets grab a couple dig out your hammer and build a platform to put the washer on so it can be higher enough to drain properly or you could ask Cruising the cut who had one until he finally bit the bullet and bought a 240 volt front load washer and dryer combination unit and that's how he does his laundry now. Though even with solar running the front load washer dryer while cruising the cut guarantees you excellent mains power coming of the engine which is better that discharging you house batteries.

Sometimes polystyrene is not actually polystyrene, but is ' PE' not ' PU'. PE can be recycled, although a discussion with my local authority on the matter was fruitless, as the manager of the recycling department couldn't understand - it looks the same so must be the same was his dcision!

Wonderful.... London is fine. I have spent many good weekends there in my rugby playing days. Indeed, 2 weeks before I came to Japan - almost 20 years ago now - my 2 older children and my best friend and his wife took me to London for the weekend. We went to an area near Piccadilly, they called little Tokyo. There are lots of Japanese supermarkets, restaurants - izakaya in Japanese - where we ate Japanese food, had sake etc....It was great. The reality of Japan is way better though!! Oh, by the way, Rich, when you said that Fran had gone to a wedding,,, My wife started to cry,,,I said why? She is a pretty good English speaker, but she is used to a Welsh accent, not Brummie and Cockney. She thought - and you did look miserable, young fella - Fran had gone to her wedding,,,, to marry someone else!!! 😜 And again, in fairness to her bless her, we are watching these out of sequence and she thought this was a recent upload. As always, thank you for your videos.

I made it to the end but I was drinking a very large gin and tonic 😳 seriously though, it was great as always. Loved the gardening but need more detai as watering fills me with dread! So how do you keep plants alive when you’re away from the boat! The washing machine looks good but a bit complicated for me. After some research I’ve decided to go for a Drumi machine. I showed my better half the video on KZfaq and he was impressed but he doesn’t know I’ve ordered it! It’s an indulgence but with no electric and hardly any water I think I’ll give it a go. It also won the James Dyson award for innovation so it must be good! We’re also going to Crick but not sure what day, if it’s Monday I hope we bump onto you. Thanks for sharing your journey, your videos a wonderful.

What type of oil did you use for the oil change? A diesel requires a specific type of oil. Here in the us its determined by the Society Of Automotive Engineers. SAE for short and each container of oil is so marked with the grade of oil. Each grade is prefaced with a S or a D. The S stands for spark ignition and the D stands for Diesel ignition. You don't mix the two because of the compression. A gas engine generally uses from 8.5 to 10.5 compression ratio. Where as your Diesel engine could use up to 21 to 1 compression ratio which is common is small diesels. In most diesels a 15w-45 oil weight is used and common. Do not mix oil with artificial oil as it has a lot of cleaning capability in it and if the engine has been using conventional oil all its life that's what you should continue using. Buy a gallon container as it's generally done and cheaper that way. Plus you always have oil on hand to add to the engine as needed. Cheers!
