Good discussion here. Kit, I think, hit the nail on the head: "Not Such A Bad Boy", could have (and I think SHOULD have) been a single. In 1985, I had a band that was playing a lot of college gigs. We played "Not Such A Bad Boy" mixed in with our set lists that included some originals mixed in with covers of Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Duran Duran and more. When we played "Not Such...", kids would come up and ask if it was a Bryan Adams song. And think about it: right up Bryan's alley at the time. Thanks for featuring Broad Street in this episode. Well done. 👍

When I was in college in the 80s, I saw a band perform Magneto and Titanium Man and I've Got A a Feeling in the same show!

Nobody in this discussion mentioned the interview that Paul McCartney did circa 1984/85 for the South Bank Show on UK TV with host Melvyn Bragg ..... In addition to the promo subject material for Broad Street, there is a filmed sequence inside a recording studio of Paul playing his Rickenbacker bass thru a delay effect and coming up with a 4-note bass riff that would form the basis of writing the song No More Lonely Nights ..... George Martin is standing by listening, and then sits at the grand piano playing chords in accompaniment to Paul's 4-note bass riff, essentially composing the beginning demos of No More Lonely Nights.

Also there was a cool scene of Paul jamming on guitar in the studio for about a minute, it was the song on the soundtrack called Corridor Music

This is one that I was excited to get when I saw the song list but after listening I just couldn't get into it. I am a huge McCartney fan and always will be but each time that I come back to it to give it a chance it just doesn't work for me. No More Lonely Nights was a great song, loved the fact that Gilmour played on it. Happy New Year all!

Great episode! Always liked ‘Not Such A Bad Boy’ And ‘No Values’. And ‘No More Lonely Nights’ is in my top 10 of Macca songs. Not too crazy about the redos.

Yes Paul was very popular in the UK but the first Paul number one there was in 1977 while in the US already in 1971. Generally the Beatles and every Beatle except John were more popular in the US

The LP, cassette, and CD each have different time configurations. I was surprised that nobody mentioned maybe he should have done all new original music for the film. This is definitely not an essential nor worthy of an archive release.

Seems strange to have a nearly 2 hour podcast and not talk about the film, the whole backstory to that film being made and its failure is quite interesting... probably more interesting than the film itself, thru the 70's McCartney wanted to make a film but couldn't get anyone to collaborate on it... when it was clear that as always McCartney only works with 'yes men' and did it anyway and proved he really hadn't learned anything... that mid 80's era was really the last time the general public had any interest in McCartney's career and since then he's the 'legendary...' etc croaking out the jukebox... still as I said from a biographical point of view an interesting moment where he probably misjudged his options and hastened the end of his pop career and audience...

Thanks. Well, as stated in the video, we would like to talk about the movie itself in October - which will be its 40th Anniversary. -- Joe

Thanks for writing. I certainly feel that the music alone is worth a show to itself. We'll do a show on the movie as well. Whether or not the general public had an interest in McCartney after this is subject for debate, because since radio was the primary way to promote any new music, and majority of record sales comes from a young audience, if radio didn't program his music to that audience, that directly affects the sales. This is what happens to the music of veteran artists as they get older, and those that programmed radio felt that McCartney's audience is getting older.

@@kenmichaelsradio748 that's a fair point about radio play Ken, that whole 80's period was interesting as I see it as the last time the old 60's rockers were a part of the contemporary culture, McCartney, Harrison, Dylan, Stones, The Who etc it felt like the record biz wanted to get rid of them before pivoting in the 90's to them all being 'legends', still I know it's an unpopular opinion on a show like this but I find if you talk to more serious music fans, record collectors etc you never hear people talk about McCartney, I think he's used the Beatles over the years to stay in the spotlight but really there's very little interest in his solo work since that mid 80's period, if you do a show on the movie I'll be interested to listen.

@@MercuriusHibernicus Well, like I said the music industry is youth-driven, and if the new music of veterans isn't programmed to young people, an artist's fan base will just get older and diminish. It's an interesting topic as to why McCartney has chosen to rely so much on his Beatles material when he does his concerts. I don't think there's an easy answer to that. If John Lennon had lived, do you think John and Paul would go this heavy on Beatles material? Maybe the reason why he plays so much Beatles is that Ringo will only sing so many Beatles songs, and Paul is the only chance we have to hear it from one of them. Paul also wants to fill stadiums, and he may feel that to do so he has to rely on his Beatles material more. It makes for a good debate.
