Episode 15: 102lb Bluefin Tuna on the Shimano Orca Popper

Күн бұрынI got out on my buddies boat earlier in the week and headed offshore looking for Bluefin Tuna. A few minutes in the gyros led us to the gold. Brian Bergquist got one to commit to the Shimano Orca Popper. A tad bit undergunned the total fight time was just over an hour, so this is a shortened version. Caught on a Shimano Tranx 500 and a custom 10' Shimano Teramar West Coast rated 20-40lb.

Another great video Bryan. Watching the video, I just kept thinking man that reel looks overmatched, but he stuck with it and it was great to see it landed. Keep the great videos coming.

Mark Randle haha thanks Mark! We were going YT fishing but ended up swinging outside to look for some fish we heard about and found em, just the bigger grade than we thought. We were all under gunned haha.

How long was the fight and if you wouldn’t mind what was the rod model? Was it 20-40 braid or mono ?

45minutes on 80lb to 80lb … the rod was too soft

@@BryanTimmthank you I have a Shimano teremar 9 foot rated 30-65 braid, it’s pared with a Tranx. Would it be able to handle the same fish grade? Would you recommend 65 braid. Thank you so much for your help I love ur vids.

@@socalfishincrew5410 that might be too light for 100lb fish. You’ll be fine on anything to 80lb fish id imagine. I fish 50 mono on a jig stick and have caught fish to 100lbs you just gotta have a beefier rod

@@BryanTimm lol … hey how’s the tranx 500 since ? Holding up still using it ? I’m about to buy one for 100-200 lb tarpon , no other reel option that has level wind really, I use the 400 now and it’s barely holding up lol , big nasty fish put the hurt on my reels

Why would you fish a baitcaster for this type of fishing? Makes no sense.

Chris W This isn't a basic bait caster. It's actually very powerful and can hold plenty 80lb braid. It has the same internals as a Trinidad 16. It casts a mile and is a favorite amongst a lot of anglers. This day we were originally fishing for yellowtail on the beach and last minute shot offshore looking for smaller yellowfin. We ran into these fish by chance.
