Great compare video. Thank you, awesome to watch. For me, 100 % the air suspension. My LR 3 is fit with the Xlifter kit. This gives much more ground clearance. And more height options with the air suspension.

I went with Springs about 6 years ago after a failure on American Flag Mountain in CO in the middle of a thunderstorm, and then a complete failure in Dalhart NM a couple years later in the middle of the winter at 5:30pm on a Friday. I drove all the way to Little Rock on the bumpstops. I haven’t regretted the coil conversion at all. It has its limitations, but they still perform well, and have softened a bit over time. My rig is heavy too with Tactical Rovers bumpers and rock sliders, and loaded drawers in the back. I’ve saved a couple lbs by removing all the rear seats. Great comparison between the two. Thanks!

I've had each setup on my LR3's and can say the air suspension is superior in performance. Coils have advantages in that they never go down. I would take air suspension any day of the week. You notice the approach and departure angles are also better with the air suspension. Even with the aftermarket hitch on the black rig. Another reason to use the LR hitch over bolt on hitches. I have a rear locker on my LR3 and with the coils it does pretty dang good. Still, I prefer the air suspension. As for color, I like the grey but like the alpaca color interior. The only time my clearance issues happen is on the freeway at high speed, like you mentioned, with some weight/gear or people in the back, slight rub on that rear wheel. 275/65/18 Cooper STT Pro✌🏻🇺🇸 BTW, best LR3/4 video on youtube.

Thanks for joining the conversation, and for letting us know we’re making great content!! So it was negative -20 out where we live last week and the air has just given up (lol!) so have been driving the coils while I troubleshoot… We’re going to order the coil spacer kit from Lucky 8 that will raise up the coil spring rig and improve approach and departure but it likely will still not be as good as the air in extended or super extended mode. In one of our other LR3 videos (on Fins and Things) we discuss the hitch we put on and why; chose the wide one to act as a skid of sorts to not tear apart the plastic bumper; even though we’d lose departure angle. We’ve noticed the e-trailer hitch on the black one doesn’t hang as low as the OEM one and the singular post of the OEM was getting jammed up on us at times in the rocks. Also it was old and corroded and operating it was a pain (lol!) Love that you let us know your color preference too! 🙌😃

@@MilitaryMobility I think the cold causes more problems with the air suspension for whatever reason because I live where it is down in the negatives each night too and it really doesn’t like waking up in the morning. Coils going on my LR4 now although I have a feeling I might miss the air. I noticed the air riding pretty firm once up in off road mode and was thinking the coils would actually ride better at a higher than stock height but that doesn’t seem to be the case sadly.

@@thinde88 Another polar bear Rover like ours (lol!) Depending on what you’re doing with your rig you may not miss the air and have less stress in the cold with the coils. As you’ve been seeing on the videos and in the comments plan your tire size accordingly. I’d recommend no more that 32” with the heady duty could that give a claimed lift if 2”. The Lucky 8 SYA kit will raise you up a big higher (which we’re getting and going to try out, yes we’ll make a video!) but it seems like 32” is still a good limit unless you want to mod your fender wells, etc. Let us know how the swap goes! Proud Rhino SYA lift. it’s a strut extension kit give it a 2.5in lift and comes with limiting strap prevent CV shaft over extension and binding. Works for both coil and air strut. Given perks for air is it retains the supple soft ride quality without over inflating the strut for that 2.5in lift, combine with 2.5in rhino lift rods for lifted error free soft ride my next plan is to do that! Coil strut you’ll get the much needed 2.5in lift! Also you can fit 33.5in tires with some wheel well liner modification with SYA, tho I think 32in tires is perfect size without modifications. And if you have an air strut problem you can still drive on bump stops with 32-33in tires why it’s called SYA (Save Your Ass)

@@MilitaryMobility important to know that the SYA doesn't add 2.5 inch to EAS setup, but it does return the strut to the original normal position, and provides a bump stop if you have a suspension fault. It will add 2 + inches to coil lift as it does act as a spacer for the strut. The problem with running the SYA with Coils is that you will always have the cv axles running at what would be off road height. Basically, you're going to chew up cv axles running 4+" of coil lift. Sorry the comment is late, I just found your channel.

@@andrewmcgaha9629 Absolutely correct on all! That's why we discussed but we're very hesitant on putting the SYA on the coils. We now have 3x LR3's with two of them on coils. We may change one back to air as we really enjoy the towing, cargo, and height advantages so it will be worth the extra maintenance. Thanks so much and look forward to seeing you on the trail!

I have a 2002 P38...after the 18th yr, I switched to the coils and don't regret it. The air suspension was taking too long to rise continually and was a pain, even after fixing them, they eventually would have something else go wrong with the suspension.. The air ride was smooth when hitting bumps, however, on highway and daily drive was about the same with no noticeable difference. The toughest part was just knowing that I no longer had the air rise capability, which at times felt I no longer had a real rover. The overall quality of life and sleep was increase 1000x fold just knowing I would never have suspension issues again. I got stuck over 200 miles from home and had to drive back on the bumpers because air suspension failed. That was always a concern when traveling long distance. But that was the past and it was worth the peace of mind going with the coils. It made my P38 much more reliable overall any long distant travels. If I had to decided again, I would change them out with no second thoughts. As long as you replace them with quality coils and shocks, its worth the peace of mind any times due to the high issues with these vehicles. One less thing to worry about. However, let me clarify, that I am only driving on highways with decent roads, and not pulling anything. If I was trekking off road and/or pulling heavy loads, I would never switch to coils.

LR3’s are when Ford owned Land Rover, and LR4 are when the India Tata motors took ownership. The 4.4 V8 in the LR3 is a Jaguar engine that’s been around forever and is very reliable. The switch to the 5.0 V8 and turbo 6 did create some engine issues. There’s a lot more things to look out for on LR4’s and they can be great vehicles if they’ve been cared for properly. Great video! I run BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2, LT 265/60 R18. These are slightly larger than stock LR3 tires and because they’re truck tires they hold up very well when the LR3 is loaded with gear. You can also use the GAP tool to calibrate the tire size with the truck. I have found that the LR3 doesn’t need giant tires like you see on many Jeeps. So my Johnson Rods are gathering dust. Additionally, it’s easier to use snow chains. (Remember Dick Cepek? Long ago he discussed tire size, determining air pressure and “right-sizing” tires for the vehicle’s purpose.)

Hi, at 18:00 you are talking about the plastic part with the fittings for the rear heating underneath. You say to move the tubes and flatten the plastic.... Attention, behind that plastic there is also a metal blade of the welding point of the supporting structure, which becomes dangerous for those who mount the 32 or 33 size tires. I cut the plastic and flattened the metal blade. Now I mount the 33x12,50 R17 and I no longer have the problem of rubbing at the rear....

The air is definitely great for certain terrains in Moab and we love our EAS; however for us it is not better in every way. Aside from what will be revealed during rest of the series, last week it was -19 degrees up north and walking outside in the morning, the EAS had completely given up and was on the bump stops with no hopes of re-inflating. Understandable that the rubber would contract enough at those temps to creates leaks in the valves, etc. So we fired up the coils and had a great day on the trail!

I got a Dunlop one (identical to Hitachi, no reprogramming) for £190 and fitted for £100 :) Not bad at all. What impact would it have on the CV joints doing a lot of highway miles with the suspension quite high. Also, the car becomes a little unstable when too high at speed. When overlanding, I have an ex-army Sankey trailer with 360 degree NATO hitch (custom made) with spare parts/tools etc. The trailer has the same track as the Disco which is perfect and can carry around a tonne. Thanks Superman and good observation on the lsd; yes it’s been a very slight difference and easily overcame with proper brake throttle modulation. @@nickrobertshaw9692 Hi Nick and thanks for the clarification. Yes, there is no LSD in the traditional sense. Land Rover uses the term “cross link” for the LR3 which helps pass traction back and forth as needed between the driver side and passenger wheels. With our coil conversion we lost that ability however are able to compensate by using proper brake throttle modulation to allow the traction control system to engage and offer assistance. I believe this is done by manipulating the ABS system however not entirely sure. Lastly, we still have the center locking diff capability which is controlled by the traction control system. We’ve toyed with installing a selectable ARB rear locker but haven’t been so in need of that capability that we can justify the cost. Maybe down the road…

I guess the US didnt get any factory coil models, in Australia 2006/2006 you could get an S spec base model with coils, 5 seater, cloth trim and no terrain response. It was dropped quickly as most went for the SE or HSE 7 seater with full leather and the TDV6 is the more common engine choice. Regardless of coil lift or spacers used you will always be limited by the CV angle, i have a Llams electronic suspension controller so can go from normal to plus 4" is the turn of a knob.

I did add 2" spacers on my air suspension (not Rhino) and I do have one issue with that. the upper control arm touch the struts aluminum housing when it's in extended mode and making holes until it burst ( I already changed twice and it's also the reason I thought coil will be the solution)…..maybe Rhino kit is better with the strap. Hi and thanks for watching. Personally I would not recommend running 2” spacers or the Rhino kit on top of the HD coils for the same reasons that you’re experiencing; it taxes the angles of your CV joints too much and will cause problems. The only way to get what you want "Best of both worlds" is the air shocks. They have the lower stability for the highway and clearance off road. A fixed system with coils will sacrifice either stability or clearance you can't have both.

We decided to make this series as many LR owners feel strongly about the air vs coils topic and there weren’t any side by side comparisons; just a lot of chatter on forums. The intent was to educate and allow each driver to define what’s their priorities are. In your instance it seems the “best of both worlds” is the air’s ability to change ride heights, for others the “best of both worlds” may mean offroad capability and reliability. We love the air but in terms of overall reliability the tried and true coils shine. We don’t have the spacers on our coils rig as we’re looking for larger coils which will offer greater travel however we have driven LR3’s with the spacers. Yes raising the height changes the center of gravity however it’s still a very stable and solid rig to drive on the highway. Thanks for the conversation and look forward to seeing you on the trail! 🙌

I own a dark grey one, but I think the black looks better. However I think white with tan interior looks the best. Im really enjoying this comparison however, I think a lot of the issue that the coiled LR3 is having isnt from the coils rather its from the clearance. If you had statted out with a 3 inch lift you would be doing a whole lot better. I’ve been on the market to coil swap and the one thing thats stopping me is the availability of only 2 inch lifts. Whats up with that?! Btw these videos are great. I appreciate how honest and detailed you guys are. (Also is it just me or does the dark grey not even look like its sitting on a 2” lift?)

I love the white the best too! Ha, but seriously we're on the lookout for a white one with a rear locker. Might go LR4 to try a different engine too. Thank you for the compliment on the videos, it's very encouraging for us and is greatly appreciated!! I have two observations about the coil lift and perceived height; 1) for that size lift we maxed the tire size we could stuff in there, as I knew we wouldn't gain a lot of ground clearance from the lift itself, so wanted to max out what we could gain from the tires. I felt pretty secure in doing this as these vehicles don't have an incredible amount of articulation (as say compared to a Jeep) so I felt fairly confident calculating what I believe the shock travel to be and maxing out the tire size so it didn't rub. Watch the part where we stuff the tires, think we calculated pretty darn good! 2) When companies say 2" or 4" lift it's really all rubbish, they do that because they think the customer is stupid. It's the coil spring rate that is important and will dictate how much "lift" you will get. And we have the heavy ARb bumper in winch so gravity has an influence there too, then add people, then add cargo, you see where this goes. I can only imagine folks who have the steel rear bumper, slider, armor, etc. For us light is right with these rigs as they are already HEAVY. That being said we might get a roof rack for one of them to help with long distance trips! Hope this all helps or sparks some thought...

that first hangup, why didn't the diffs send drive to the non spinning wheels? never seen that happen in the Australian spec of disco's. Even disco1 had LSD in the rear as standard.
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 2 жыл бұрын
Believe you may be referring to the rear passenger wheel at around the 3:20 mark. The LR3 (Disco 3's) are all electronically controlled via the terrain response system. As you see, it eventually did send drive to the non spinning wheels, or we'd still be there (lol!). The system can be manipulated for better performance by feathering the gas lightly until the TRS engages or by brake throttle modulating. In this example we wanted to show the difference of how the air suspension, utilizing the cross-link (which applies side to side traction), was superior to the coil suspension (when you do the coil conversion, you lose the cross link feature) but again can still compensate by brake throttle modulating.

So what is the plan should an air line break or any other component in the system that renders the truck stranded? I mean you can't carry spare parts for every component. I think id carry conventional parts and do the swap to make it hom. IMO the level sensing air setup is another major win when you have a loaded truck.

Old man emu springs raise the vehicle 45mm and use the OEM shocks alongside the OME coils. Apparently the OEM shocks have sufficient travel to go with the OME coils My understanding is that any further will stretch the ball joints and CV joints.
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 11 ай бұрын
Hi Paul and thanks for going the conversation. I’d say 45mm (approx 1.75”) is what we gained as well. As for the shocks I was a bit confused as the OEM shock is the air shock which would not be compatible with a coil spring, unless you were referring to models that came from the factory with coils; which to date I have come across zero in the US. I think that both Atlantic British and OME have been very conservative in their height to avoid ball joint and CV failure however the stock air suspension has massive travel and compared to how you can flex the AB/OME coils. Granted, that is why LR only wants you using the extended and super extended modes periodically and self lowers at speed (also for reduced risk of rollover). All that to say I believe 3” coils could be a feasible option if they were available. See you on the trail!

@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, please lend a bit more insight for us to better understand the question. Both of our LR3’s have the selectable Terrain Response System (mud, ruts, snow, grass, etc), Dynamic Stability Control and Hill Descent Control selections. Those are Land Rovers terms for the 3 separate features of the LR3 (not including the cross link feature unique to the air suspension only, that is automatically part of the EAS).
@davepb5798
@davepb5798 2 жыл бұрын
@@MilitaryMobility Well, when you got stuck with the coiler, you were cross axled, but there was no braking of the spinning wheels. So was the wheel speed insufficient to instigate traction control? It just looked odd to me.
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 2 жыл бұрын
@@davepb5798 ok, got it now; thanks for the clue in. When you switch to coils the one technology aspect you lose from the EAS is the cross link. You may know but what this does is help with traction by supplying the air from the up-travel shock to the down travel shock. One observation we’ve made and discussed in the series is that we have to supply a bit more brake throttle modulation in coil rig to engage the Terrain Response System than we would have to in the air (you still have to brake throttle modulate in the air, just not as much). Hope this clears things up.

@MilitaryMobility You were looking for a higher lift on your sprung LC3, have you considered spring spacers?
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 2 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks. Yes we have considered spacers, however the only available spacers we’ve seen on the market are the ones from Lucky 8. We bought them and have them in our shop but they would result in too much of a CV angle, leading to premature wear or breaking on the trail. Ideal for ground clearance and CV health would be about an inch more of height, not another 2+ that would be the case with those spacers. We’re also looking for bigger struts that have 3” of height instead of the OME ones that provide around 2”. Not a lot of information out there on other coil lift options though. The search continues…

@@MilitaryMobility loved this video! Hate to lose my air suspension but I have “overlanded” 8 miles round trip everyday ato my house on a rural east Texas dirt road for the past 14.5 yrs. In the winter it’s muddy with water often across the road. I’m 2nd owner & have put 162K miles on it since 2008. Not too shabby but have done A LOT of patch work on the air suspension as you can imagine. I’m a rag pocket & couldn’t run it to the dealership (100 miles away.) So, it been me and a few relatives helping me out. My relatives abandoned me and said I need a “decent” and “reliable”vehicle and to scrap my LR3. Those were fighting words to me. I LOVE my LR3 and with each and every issue it throws at me I figure it out. BTW, I’m a 64 yr old grandmother. With red hair & a temper. Got my AB coil springs in today. Lined up someone to install them but need some guidance on the flash. I know to install where my scan tool goes after coils are on. My question is: after you did the flash did y’all have to hard wire it on the drivers side? I e watched a video on that and honestly, it scares me to have to cut and splice 2 of those tiny wires after identifying which 2 they are. So, how hard was that part for y’all? BTW, kudos on you working with veterans and thank you for your service. I’ll change my Amazon contribution to Military Mobility. Any help with the flash part of my conversion is appreciated! own a 2005 tdv6 discovery 3.420000klm owned for 15 years. Live in outback Australia Northern territory travelling dirt roads continually. Changed recently to Dunlop /Terrafirma coils from UK 600kg rated. Sick and tired of replacing valve blocks and sensors on air suspension currently travelling Australia outback towing 2.5ton Caravan with the LR loaded to 450klg of gear the ball weight still at 350kg. The suspension has hardly moved at all and at the most a few mm. It is permanently at 2.5" lift ,but!! with the air one can only travel under 40klm ph to maintain the extra 2" lift the air gives you therefore i find the coils far superior than air for the STANDARD HEIGHT settings still maintaining terrain response. Off road the coils i find perform just as good as the air and on road hardly a difference at all .I am disappointed you guys are doing a comparison with the Black Discovery on Johnson rods .There is no way you would fit 275 65 18 tires at standard height you can see the height difference between the two quite clearly. Once the Black one is in off road mode it gets an extra 2" over the coils. This is NO WAY a fair comparison !! Install some SYA lift spacers to the coils then do the comparison ..Very disappointed guys i have been following you for some time and love your vids but i'm afraid you have failed me here.
@MilitaryMobility
@MilitaryMobility 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for joining the conversation. The Johnson Rods are essentially worthless because we have the GAP programming tool, which you allows to custom program whatever height you would like, which is a huge benefit of the air suspension. Our comparison is comparing one suspension against the other, warts and all. The lack of height adjustability is a downside of the coils. Also with the GAP programming tool, as well as several other brands, there is no speed limitation with the air suspension. You can go whatever speed you want at whatever height you want. We feel our equipment and comparison is very realistic of what most everyone has when running either an air or coil conversion suspension. We’ve stated we’d like to get bigger coils or spacers and you’ll see in the comments folks are saying there is a SYA kit available from Lucky 8 that includes spacers and limiting straps so you don’t exceed the limits of the CV shafts. Lastly, we’re more than happy to receive some spacers if you are kind enough to purchase them or make a donation to help out our mission. In all seriousness we are a non-profit that serves veterans in need (disabled, injured, depression and suicidal thoughts). We are able to run multi-day resiliency courses for them because of donors and because we run training courses for civilian wheelers and corporate teams. So I’d ask that you please don’t lose sight of that. We are very excited about our KZfaq offering and know that while we will not please everyone; many people love it and realize it’s a platform for meaningful conversations and to share our common love of off-roading.
