Hi from Australia, I don't know how i have only now came across your videos. I always research country and what mine, also the conditions for the miners. Its all very interesting to me. Great video Paul, look forward to watching them all.

Thanks Paul, excited to follow you on KZfaq. I have watched You & Judy for years and years, love both You and Judy's knowledge of Gemstones. Have watched segments of you both at different mines. While I was in Australia, some 20 yrs ago, never making it to Coober Pedy(darn), I did purchase my first Black Opal in country. At one point while living in WA state I wanted to take the course offered from GIA, however, life changes and never got to do. I have many gemstones in my collection...just love the history too that you are presenting in your lessons...excited here while traveling full-time in my RV :) !

Hello, Fazal. I actually have a basic book for beginners available on the apple book store (an e book).It is called "Colored Gemstones by Paul Deasy" for $9.99. It will give you a good basic knowledge of gemstones. You can also take classes with the Gemological Institute of America via computer, but it costs a bit more, of course! Glad you enjoy the gem classes on my youtube channel

No I have not. Besides the Airport in Detroit, the extent of my time in Michigan was going to a James Taylor concert back in 1982 when I was in training for my first job out of college in Toledo, Ohio. Other than that, one of my brothers used to live in Detroit and has since moved to Canada.

The travel alone sounds absolutely horrific. Is there any way to take a private plane there directly?

Travel is always a challenge, but a necessary part of the business. There are very few direct routes to any mines. Private planes could help in some instances (I am actually a licensed private pilot with a single engine land rating). The reality is, going long distances in a Cessna 110 is impractical. I once flew from Tampa to Dallas in a 50 knot headwind. The Cessna cruises about 110 knots (give or take) so I was effectively flying at about 60 knots. Between stopping to refuel and eventual fatigue, it took me the better part of 2 days. on the other hand, it was a fast flight home!

Want to go to a mine? Fly to Arizona. Go to Bisbee (yes the mine that produced beautiful turquoise, don a hard hat, straddle the board on the train. Listen to the docents who actually worked there. Look around you and you will see the veins of copper. I even saw veins of malachite. Fun and you don't even need a passport.
