It shows how much representation around us really matters, and self love is everything. I didn't expect her to have that problem because light skinned has been shown as beauty on many platforms like media which is why I liked Bonang so much because she was that one dark skinned girl representing a lot of people
@MegaJohnOtto
@MegaJohnOtto 3 жыл бұрын
@@tiyiselabaloyi3837 it definitely happens both ways and as you said representation around you matters. I know I was also dissed when I was in primary about being light skin, people didn’t even believe I could speak SeSotho. It was painful for me because problem constantly told me that I don’t fit the mould of my identity and we’re constantly dictating my identity to me. I had to always prove that I’m black and SeSotho. It became a different problem when I started going to school with White people. No side is always great

As a dark skinned black woman I completely understand Pearl. Today I truly understand. And it's true, I've never had a lack of career opportunities in SA just because of my skin colour. If anything, lighter women in Africa have been judged as blondes with less intellectual capabilities. The only thing that we've really experienced in SA is the European beauty standards that we have ourselves to blame for adopting in the first place. Light girls don't have it easy, maybe they get more sexual attention but is that even a benefit? Something to think about 🤔. Thank you for the pearls of wisdom. You're a real gem. 💎

Yes, thank you; Im an American SO-CALLED "Black" Person (Note : Black, White, & African-American are not true Nationalities), & Colorism & the "White" standard of beauty are Worldwide; virtually every country, due to European Imperialism/Colonialism promotes Whiteness as the highest form of beauty, & that African features are ugly. Lighter skinned bi-Racials are praised as being more beautiful, light skin, green, blue, grey colored eyes, wavy/curly hair, etc. Many dark-skinned girls used Colorism as an excuse for their failures. Pearl Thusi would be considered gorgeous, by American standards.

This interview has made me so sad. I have been through something similar with my dad when he got sick. I was a care giver to him. And as a girl child this really can take a tall on someone. So the pain for me has not gotten better but I have learnt to live with it. I pray though that she heals. Thank you Mac G for the interview
