Another multi series deep dive! We did a multi part series previously on John and Paul with Antony Rotunno (Glass Onion Podcast).
We felt the time was right to tackle the next one and for it we enlisted the help of Author/Journalist Eoghan Lyng (George Harrison In The 1970s U2 on Track), to join us for this first installment on the somewhat frosty relationship Macca and George had between the period of January 1969 thru the Spring of 75.
We present a timeline of events where the two paths traded barbs in the press (which wasn't much), but notably business pertaining to Apple, Paul and Linda appearing at one of the Dark Horse Tour's.
We also have a few clips in this one. Not directly related to Macca but we felt the inclusion of the rare late 1974 radio interview between John Lennon and George was worthy of inclusion as it was likely the last time those two conversed. As well as some nice footage of Paul and George signing the dissolution papers in December 1974.
We will definitely continue this series at some point and we thank Eoghan for his time and knowledge (and impersonations!)

Like in so many "family" relationships it can resemble a roller coaster ride. I get a feeling that they both loved each other and during their younger years (1970s) there were too many distractions and noises coming from lawyers, managers and so-called insiders. Big picture George showed up to Lindas memorial in London and apparently Paul provided housing to George during his last days and acted as a cover from the preying eyes of the media. Their music is the core soundtrack to my teenage years and beyond! Thank you for a trip down memory lane. Cheers!

I agree with Tom, Paul’s quote about George and God sounds a lot like what others thought about him. Even if Paul didn't believe in God, his family is religious, therefore by insulting believers, he would also insulting his own family. Which doesn't seem like something he would do at all, let alone just to attack George.

Very good show! Got me thinking about what your thoughts are on the relationship between George and Ringo from 1970's to the late 1990's? I always wondered why George never made a guest appearance in Ringo's All Starr Band in 1989, 1992 or 1995...after getting together on stage in the 70's and 80's a few times.

good question Tom. I always wondered that myself during those years. I wanted a Wilburys revival Ringo Show and thought we would get it circa 1989-95. seemed like the perfect time. shame it never happened.

Ive heard some strange opinions but 'Here comes the moon' better than 'Here comes the sun' ??? well.......each to their own.....'Run of the mill' is my favourite George solo song, lyrically profound. "Though im beside you i cant carry the lame for you....."

Superb discussion really enjoyed the voices BTW...good job Eoghan! This is one of those delicate subjects (interpersonal relationships between the 4) that we as fans want everything to be perfect. Humans are not perfect even our beloved Beatles. My thoughts - the 4 were tired of each other and needed space. The space they found in the 1970's made them happy, or at least they wanted us "fans" to believe that. We can speculate about George/Paul meetings in the 70's, but one thing is for certain...they did not go out of their way to hang together... or play together. What we "fans" always wanted during that time 'a reunion" and I say "we" fans because other than Ken Michaels (love ya Ken!) not one Beatles fan I knew in the 1970's wanted them to stay separate ...we all wanted them to get along and make more music as the Beatles. We fans are funny sometimes. Thanks again guys, really cool video!

@@eoghanlyng5074 impressive. good one. got to say that Irish, Welsh & Scots I have heard ...all do pretty good Liverpool accents. must be the island surrounded by water thingy 🙂 one thing I am interested in. Did Paul & George cross paths at any Grand Prix's during the 1970's-90's? I never knew Paul liked racing until recently and we know George followed the F1 circuit closely. did the Harrisons & Macca's hang at Monaco, Milan or Silverstone?

@@eoghanlyng5074 another thought. George cocaine binging in 70's? his output does not match the drug. when I think about it... cocaine would not have been my guess. I know it was fashionable in the early mid 70's but usually "laid back" songs do not come from that type of drug binging lol.

I've been watching this show for over 2 years and this may just be the best episode you fellas have done. You have truly outdone yourselves. Eeoghan has a special place in my heart for defending the McCartney album which I have always loved. Paul made that album by himself when he was clearly dealing with depression in response to the band breakup so of course there are no big band moments like on Abbey Road. People need to learn to enjoy a laid back minimalist album from someone who just isn't in the right headspace to do a big band album. I've always liked Extra Texture and "Tired of Midnight Blue" is my favorite song on there. Cloud Nine and 33&a3rd are far better albums in my view. It seems to me that Eeoghan doesn't really like the commercial sound of George. I on the other hand really enjoy the "feel good" George albums the most while I enjoy all his solo work. That was truly an amazing start to an amazing series gentlemen. Andy often mentions things I don't know on this show but I knew the yacht was named Queen Mary. :)

George didn’t like it in 1996 because the recording of John playing with his TV on was terrible. Now with AI they can completely and cleanly capture John’s voice without the TV or background noise. It’s a better song than the other two posthumous John songs-better written and a cleaner extraction of John’s voice.

Thanks for this, I enjoyed to show, I really liked the point about Paul and George being the first Beatlesd to meet when they were uncool school boys and that meant they were very close like family, but families find it hard to say they love onbe another. The quote from Paul about George at 1hr 6min, that two of you interpret as being harsh from Paul, I really don't think it is. Paul's defending George saying he's not weird, he's quite a straight up person, people think he's weird because he believes in God, but he isn't, he's straight ahead and he just says what he thinks, he doesn't bend his words to be diplomatic, that's why the press finds him difficult. That's my paraphrase I think that was a good thing for Paul to say.

Why does everyone on every Beatles video always ignore Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey? Not only was it a number 1 song, but it's also a work of complete genius in my humble opinion!

Wow, I was hoping for something insightful but it turned out to be what I expected. All the tropes and pitting the Beatles against each other are at play. I also saw Get Back and Paul was not rubbing George's face in Hey Jude nor smug about about it. That was not the point he was making. That is really the true gift of GB is everyone gets to interpret and not thru the lens of someone else. People and family relations are messy. It would be wise to understand your own family dynamic before judging someone else. It never cease to amaze me that Paul tried to remain on good terms with John and George after the breakup considering their treatment of him. But that is the strength of family bond which is hanging in there to some degree no matter what.

Add a comment… @philipmartin5757 1 second ago I think your guest has misunderstood the Lennon McCartney 'Get Back' chat where Paul brings up Hey Jude. They were talking about how George had been frozen out and the overall inner band tensions, some of which Lennon is blaming Paul for. This is when Paul brings up Hey Jude as an example of that unresolved tension. I don't read that as smug, just plain fact. Context is everything here. The context rules out smugness completely. Plus anything the Beatles released was always a huge hit, so I don't get the point your guest is making. It's a bit of a cheap shot. However, let's now bring up She Came In Through the Bathroom Window where a McCartney song is elevated by Harrison's 'response' soloing. It works well there, McCartney gives Harrison the spotlight and the song is improved. Were they resolving that historic tension from Hey Jude with this song? My point is that it's easy to begin questioning received narratives and then fall straight back into them. Like so many, I DO have a favourite Beatle but I like the Beatles as a group much more than I do my favourite. There's no contest. I hope you read this as constructive criticism because I love your show.
